Standard Chartered predicts that bitcoin could fall to $5,000 in 2023 as part of their research on potential market surprises next year. Cryptocurrency prices fell after the Federal Reserve's June meeting, with bitcoin falling below $25,000 for the first time since March. On Thursday, bitcoin was lower by around 4% at $24,866.92, according to Coin Metrics, while ether fell more than 5% to $1,632.47. And selling pressure weighed on Tether (USDT), which lost its peg to the U.S. dollar on most exchanges Thursday, falling to 99 cents in its biggest drop since November. "Given how thin trading volumes are at the moment, a sizable (but not massive) sell order is enough to set off liquidations."

Since early June, Celentano has commuted by plane once a week to her summer internship at Ogilvy Health in Parsippany, New Jersey, from her parent's house in Charleston, South Carolina. Celentano didn't want to join the legions of summer interns fighting for affordable housing in and around New York City. And her job only requires her to be in the office — about a 45-minute drive from downtown Manhattan — once, sometimes twice, per week. For Celentano, commuting four-plus hours by plane weekly was a much easier pill to swallow than paying New York rent for three months on an intern's salary. "I didn't think twice about it," Celentano, a rising senior at the University of Virginia, tells CNBC Make It.

A small handful of experts claim to have evidence that our satellite produces forces that can trigger earthquakes. The moon's effect on earthquakes was hiddenScientists have long pondered whether the moon's tides could be linked to earthquakes. And it seems that in some cases, the moon did help trigger earthquakes around the world. By digging into these datasets, a few studies have suggested a link between Earth tides and earthquakes. Rather, it is when the rock is on the very brink of collapse that the moon's small tug could push it past that final tipping point.

In alleging that Coinbase was acting as an unregistered broker and exchange, the Securities and Exchange Commission said at least 13 crypto assets available to the company's customers were considered "crypto asset securities." They include Solana's SOL token, Cardano's ADA token, Polygon's MATIC coin and Protocol Labs' Filecoin token (FIL). Binance's BNB token, ranked fourth, fell 16%. MANILA, June 8 (Reuters) - The Philippines raised the alert level at the popular Mayon volcano by a notch on Thursday, after detecting volcanic earthquakes and hundreds of rockfall events. At "alert level 3" on a scale of 5, Mayon has increased chances of lava flows and a potential for explosive activity within weeks or even days, it added. The agency had elevated Mayon to "alert level 2" on June 5. There are no major industries around the volcano, with most farming activities in the area consisting of subsistence crops. The most destructive eruption came in February, 1841 when lava flows buried a town and killed 1,200 people.

Coinbase stock had already fallen 9% on Monday, after the SEC unveiled charges against rival crypto exchange Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao. Coinbase's flagship prime brokerage, exchange and staking programs violate securities laws, the regulator alleged in its complaint. The SEC has alleged that at least 13 crypto assets available to Coinbase customers were considered "crypto asset securities" by the regulator. Coinbase's institutional service, Prime, its retail exchange product, and its self-custody Wallet service all offered one or more crypto asset security, the SEC said in its complaint. Coinbase's staking program was also identified as a investment contract and as an unregistered security: The SEC had already taken similar action to force the closure of crypto exchange Kraken's staking service.

About two dozen bronze statues from the third century BC to the first century AD, extracted from the ruins of an ancient spa, will go on display in Rome's Quirinale Palace from June 22, after months of restoration. When the discovery was announced in November, experts called it the biggest collection of ancient bronze statues ever found in Italy and hailed it as a breakthrough that would "rewrite history". The statues were found in 2021 and 2022 in the hilltop village of San Casciano dei Bagni, still home to popular thermal baths, where archaeologists had long suspected ancient ruins could be discovered. Digging started in 2019 on a small plot of land next to the village's Renaissance-era public baths, but weeks of excavations revealed "only traces of some walls", San Casciano Mayor Agnese Carletti said. Then former bin man and amateur local historian Stefano Petrini had "a flash" of intuition, remembering that years earlier he had seen bits of ancient Roman columns on a wall on the other side of the public baths.

CANNES, May 26 (Reuters) - Japanese director Takeshi Kitano said that he held back in showing too much blood and gore in "Kubi", his new ultraviolent samurai film that features beheadings faster than can be counted. Kitano said that the violence reflected how battles were fought at the time and that the film actually held back. "The way they fought ... it's very barbaric, so we tried to limit ourselves from showing too much," said Kitano. The samurai of "Kubi" are, in Kitano's eyes, not so different from the yakuza crime syndicate members portrayed in his previous film that showed at Cannes, 2010's "The Outrage". The samurai are trying to get to the top of the food chain by being the toughest fighters, "but they are not smart.

In a clothing market in the capital, traders pointed to higher import prices, given volatile exchange rates. "I never used to fix clothes, but people fix clothes now because they cannot afford to buy them."

The volcano's eruption in 1985 killed more than 25,000 people in Colombia's biggest-ever natural disaster, with avalanches of earth and rock fragments burying entire settlements. March 22 (Reuters) - Stratasys Ltd (SSYS.O) said on Wednesday its board had rejected smaller peer Nano Dimension Ltd's (2N5By.F) $1.1 billion offer to acquire the stake it does not already own in the Israeli 3D printer maker. Following a review, the board concluded that Nano's proposal substantially undervalued the company, Stratasys said. Unlike millennials before them, Gen Zers have grown up during a boom in home prices. In a 2020 survey by Gen Z Planet, a research and advisory firm, 87% of Gen Z respondents said they wanted to own a home in the future, while just 63% of millennial respondents said the same. The survey suggested that 68% of Gen Zers viewed homeownership as a way to build wealth, compared with 60% of millennials. But the ranks of Gen Z homeowners will almost certainly grow in the coming years as they scale corporate ladders and amass savings. All this new technology and information is fueling the real-estate-mogul dreams of ambitious Gen Z investors.
After an awful 2022 that saw one of the industry's high-profile figures implode, the crypto market is looking for a bounceback. McDermott laid out to Insider's Bianca Chan and Dakin Campbell how tough times for crypto startups mean more realistic valuations and, in some cases, a reevaluation of the business model. Once of the most common critiques I hear about crypto is "It's a solution looking for a problem." The most recent crypto winter could force startups to be a bit more pragmatic about the specific problem they are looking to address. "If you can solve fraud in crypto, you can solve fraud in basically any part of finance," Meier told Insider.
Kroger is latest retailer to say it will spend more this year on worker wages as companies fight to keep employees in a tight labor market. The grocery chain will spend $770 million more on employee pay and benefits in 2023, it said after reporting earnings on Thursday. Kroger operates stores under 19 different names, including Ralph's in Southern California and Mariano's in Chicago. The Ohio-based grocer follows companies like Home Depot and Walmart in committing to raise wages this year. Walmart said in January that it would increase its minimum wage to $14 from the previous $12-an-hour rate.
Takano is reintroducing his act to make the standard workweek just 32 hours long. Takano has reintroduced his 32 Hour Workweek Act, which would tweak the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to make the standard workweek 32 hours, instead of the 40 it's currently at. It's not the first time that Takano has pushed to make the working week shorter. "So a four-day work week is something that connects a lot of Americans." Last month, Maryland lawmakers introduced the Four-Day Workweek Act of 2023, which would reduce an employee's workweek to 32 hours without cutting their pay while giving employers a tax credit.
