AP —Firefighters found a dead woman entangled in machinery Thursday in a non-public baggage-processing area at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Larry Langford, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the airport around 7:45 a.m. for a report of a person pinned in machinery used to move baggage. He said they discovered the woman entangled in a conveyer belt system in a baggage room. The baggage room wasn’t publicly accessible, Langford said, and it’s not clear how she found her way into it. After checking with the police department about the timing, Langford said he was told surveillance footage shows the woman walking in the baggage room at 2:27 a.m.

CNN —Famine has officially been declared in at least one refugee camp sheltering hundreds of thousands of people in the Darfur region of Sudan, food security organizations announced, a stark warning of the cost being paid by the population after 15 months of civil war. Famine has been ongoing in the Zanzam camp near the city of El Fasher since June, according to the United Nations-backed Famine Review Committee (FRC). The last time the FRC declared a famine was in 2017, when 80,000 people in South Sudan faced famine conditions in parts of Unity State after three years of civil war. Although this was also limited to the Zanzam camp, it warned famine could spread across the rest of El Fasher, which is home to an additional estimated 800,000 people. Both groups warned the famine at Zanzam is likely to last at least until October and potentially much longer.

When you’re paid in tips, you’re never really sure if you’ll make rent. At a rally last month in Nevada, Donald Trump announced that, if elected, he would exempt tips from federal taxes. 6 is “Large tax cuts for workers, and no tax on tips!” Republicans in Congress are already working on a bill designed to do just that. Last week, they introduced “Tax Free Tips Act of 2024,” which would end federal income and employment taxes on tips. The other half, which earns less than 32,000, already don’t pay federal taxes on their income.

Without rule of law, without a peacekeeping force, without humanitarian aid, Gaza will combust and descend into civil chaos. The Ruth Westheimer that fellow residents of her Manhattan apartment building knew was much the same person known to America as Dr. Ruth: gregarious, funny, peppy and apt to throw out a provocative question in the elevator. “She was the most well-loved person who lived here,” said Geoffrey Katin, 81, a longtime resident of the building, in Washington Heights. Dr. Westheimer, who died on Friday at 96, was America’s best-known sex therapist. But her explicit and direct advice, delivered in a casual and jovial manner, was not just for the cameras. Neighbors enjoyed bumping into her in the building, never certain how she might strike up a conversation.

To rate each state's infrastructure, we look at roads, bridges, ports and airports. New in 2024, we evaluate so-called site readiness programs set up in many states to link companies with shovel-ready sites. The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama offers one of the more robust site readiness programs in the nation. Roads, bridges, and broadband are also in excellent shape in Tennessee. Costco is increasing its annual fee for members by more than 8 percent in the United States and Canada, the first increase in seven years, the company announced on Wednesday. Beginning Sept. 1, the fee for customers who shop at Costco Wholesale stores will increase by $5 to $65 annually for the basic Gold Star Membership and by $10 to $130 annually for customers with the Executive Membership. “The fee increases will impact about 52 million paid memberships, a little over half of which are Executive,” a spokesman for Costco, the Washington State-based membership wholesale retail store, said in a statement. “As a reminder, we last raised our membership fees in the U.S. and Canada in June 2017.”The announcement did not specify whether people who purchase annual memberships before Sept. 1 will see a charge for the difference or if they can enjoy the lower price until they pay for a second year in 2025. Costco did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

Costco said Wednesday that it's raising its annual membership fee. AdvertisementCostco's annual membership fee is getting more expensive. The membership prices are the same amount regardless of currency — a Gold Star membership in Canada runs 60 Canadian dollars, for example. The increase is the first time that Costco has raised its membership fee since 2017. In May, Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said that a fee increase would happen at some point, adding that it was a question "of when we increase the fee, rather than if we increase the fee."
