☆ Student-loan borrowers are being stripped of debt relief and cheaper monthly payments because of poor customer service, a federal watchdog says

A CFPB report analyzed over 9,000 complaints it received from student-loan borrowers in the past year. It found that poor customer service at servicers have kept borrowers without relief they deserve. In that time period, 9,284 consumers submitted student-loan complaints — 6,934 of which were related to federal loans and 2,350 of which were related to private loans. Over the summer, Biden rolled out a new income-driven repayment plan, known as the SAVE plan, intended to lower many borrowers' monthly payments. STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden on Tuesday reported partial damage to an undersea telecommunications cable in the Baltic Sea running to Estonia that authorities believe occurred at the same time as damage to an undersea gas pipeline and telecom cable from Finland to Estonia. Finland launched an investigation into possible sabotage after reporting the damage to its gas pipeline to Estonia last week. Finnish and Estonian gas system operators on Oct. 8 said they noted an unusual drop in pressure in the Balticconnector pipeline after which they shut down the gas flow. The Finnish government on Oct. 10 said there was damage both to the gas pipeline and to a telecommunications cable between the two NATO countries. Later Tuesday, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that the exact reason for the failure of the cable between Sweden and Estonia still needs to be clarified.

The war began on Oct. 6, and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut production and raised prices on Oct. 17. By the end of the embargo in March 1974, the global cost of oil had climbed nearly 300%. The White House had ration cards printed in secret (fortunately never used), and President Richard Nixon contemplated military action to seize oil fields in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department said Thursday that it has imposed its first set of sanctions on two companies that shipped Russian oil in violation of a multinational price cap. A ship owned by the Emirates-based company Lumber Marine carried oil priced above $75 a barrel from a Russian port. Separately, a vessel owned by Turkey-based Ice Pearl Navigation ferried oil from Russia priced at $80 a barrel. The administration has argued that the cap has been successful, leading to a 45% drop in Russian oil tax revenue over the past year. The coalition enforcing the price cap also released a set of recommendations to improve compliance within the maritime oil industry.

Even after escalating its strike against Detroit automakers on Friday, the United Auto Workers union still has plenty of leverage in its effort to force the companies to agree to significant increases in pay and benefits. The UAW could, if it chose to, vastly expand the number of workers who could strike assembly plants and parts facilities of General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the owner of the Jeep and Ram brands. All three companies said that talks with the union continued on Saturday, though officials said they expected no major announcements. In expanding the strike on Friday, the UAW struck only the parts-distribution centers of GM and Stellantis. Weighing heavily on Wall Street stock indexes, shares of Apple (AAPL.O) fell 3.6% after the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that China had banned officials at central government agencies from using iPhones and other foreign-branded devices for work. Some investors said the data may add to signs that interest rates could remain elevated for longer. The Nasdaq ended more than 1% lower, leading declines on Wall Street. In other data, manufacturing activity in Germany, Britain and the euro zone declined, while their service sectors fell into contraction territory.
