“So far, the labor market has adjusted slowly, and the unemployment rate has only edged up. The industries that were most likely to advertise part-time work as of May were beauty and wellness; personal care and home health; retail; food preparation and service; and sports, Indeed said. During the Great Recession from 2007 to 2009, part-time work rose sharply, according to research from the San Francisco Fed. “There was this rise in part-time work when the economy and the labor market were doing well coming out of the pandemic,” Culbertson told CNN. The cost of living in Manhattan is more than twice the national average. The second- and third-most expensive places are Honolulu and San Jose, California, but in comparison, they are much more affordable. That's according to the Council for Community and Economic Research's Cost of Living Index, which measures regional price differences for everyday goods and services in 271 urban areas in the U.S. A composite score of 100 is the national average, and any score higher than 100 is above average. Data for the Cost of Living Index was collected from Jan. 1, 2024, through March 31, 2024.

Some states, municipalities and private-sector companies are pushing to make composting as commonplace as recycling. Yet data from the Environmental Protection Agency shows little residential food waste is composted in the U.S. — 3.7% as of an April 2023 report. These include at-home options, curbside bins, drop-off locations and private valet services that pick up food waste from multi-family homes. Thousands of composting facilities neededFranciosi said his organization has been fielding more calls from municipalities that are interested in composting, but funding challenges remain. Another challenge is the dearth of composting facilities.

When Liberty Tower went up for sale in Manhattan’s financial district in 1978, there was only one bidder for the 33-story skyscraper. The building was dated and dilapidated, and even though rent had plunged to $5 a square foot, it was two-thirds vacant. New York City itself had tumbled into a downward spiral after a severe fiscal crisis and a deep recession. “The financial district was failing. Liberty Tower was the first major residential conversion of an office building in New York’s financial district.

And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

"Work has changed drastically compared to what it was just 10 years ago," Haney said when he introduced the bill. Workers shouldn't be punished for not being available 24/7 if they're not being paid for 24 hours of work." U.S. business oppositionSome U.S. business interests have argued it's up to workers to set their own work-life balance. Many critics of the bill point to the complexity of establishing non-working hours for salaried employees —the California bill proposes to protect both hourly and salaried workers. Work was life, and life was something that happened on the way to and from work.

You know you’ve touched a nerve with progressive activists when they tell you not just that you’re wrong but that you’re on the other side. Such is the fate of any old-school liberal or mainstream Democrat who deviates from progressive dogma. New York magazine’s liberal political columnist Jonathan Chait was accused of lending “legitimacy to a reactionary moral panic” for critiquing political correctness. But the goal and the effect is to narrow the focus of acceptable discourse by Democrats and their allies. If liberals are denounced for “punching left” when they express a reasonable difference of opinion, potentially winning ideas are banished.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Zumper analyzed median asking rents for apartment listings in the largest 100 U.S. cities by population. Rents have also risen by at least 10% for both one- and two-bedroom apartments in other major metros: Lincoln, Nebraska; Chicago; Buffalo, New York; Madison, Wisconsin; Rochester, New York; and New York City, according to Zumper. What causes rent inflationAt a high level, rent inflation is guided by supply-and-demand dynamics, said Crystal Chen, an analyst who authored the Zumper analysis. Basically, areas with fast-growing rents are seeing demand outstrip the supply of available apartments, while those with falling rents have seen their apartment inventories growing. Rent inflation has fallen substantiallyRent inflation plummeted in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s the second library in town during the past year or so to try something clever and innovative: partnering with a 100 percent affordable housing development. These days, NIMBYs are always fighting affordable housing projects. One obvious solution is the twofer — building housing and a library together — because there’s strength in numbers. Libraries pairing with housing developers can trim construction costs. Developers can leverage city-owned property to finesse both the not-in-my-backyard types and the byzantine economics of affordable development.

As spring turned to summer this week, extreme heat caught much of New York City by surprise, sending concerned residents to prepare for rising temperatures earlier than usual, while various city agencies, civic organizations and businesses have also been adjusting their seasonal calendars. As climate change extends the traditional summer and batters the city with spontaneous rain storms, many New Yorkers are discovering that they are not quite in sync with the weather anymore and have to rethink how to adapt to the passing months. Look no further than this week: The city has already activated its first heat emergency plan of the year, but school remains in session, pools have yet to open and public beaches are still staffing up with lifeguards. For the most part, New Yorkers made modest adjustments to their schedules, postponing outings or being cautious if they pressed ahead, exercising and running errands, for example, during the morning and the evening — the coolest parts of the day.

ShotSpotter, a system the Police Department uses to detect gunfire, is overwhelmingly inaccurate and leads officers to spend hundreds of hours each month investigating nonexistent shots, according to an audit the New York City comptroller released Thursday. The Police Department has spent more than $45 million on ShotSpotter since it started using it in 2015, even as cities around the country have stopped using the system. New York must decide before December whether to renew its contract with SoundThinking, the California company that owns the system, and the audit advises officials to decline until the system can be fully evaluated. Of the 940 alerts officers responded to last June, only 13 percent corresponded to confirmed shootings. And in 2022, the audit found, the system also failed to detect more than 200 real incidents of gunfire in Manhattan.
