Jodi Rell, who was the first (and, to date, only) Republican woman to serve as governor of Connecticut, beginning her seven years in office when the incumbent resigned in a corruption scandal, died on Wednesday in Florida. Her family, providing no other details, said she died in a hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Rell had been the state’s lieutenant governor for more than nine years when, in July 2004, she began completing the term of Gov. Known as a moderate Republican, Mrs. Rell sought bipartisan compromise — a goal that became more important to her, she said, when, five months after becoming governor, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She returned to her office in the Capitol in Hartford nine days later.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's casinos saw their operating profits decline by nearly 14% in the third quarter of this year, figures released Friday by New Jersey gambling regulators show. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement issued statistics showing that the nine casinos had a collective gross operating profit of $236.5 million in the third quarter. “Consumer demand may have been an issue for Atlantic City’s casino operators in summer 2024,” said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City gambling industry. Revenue from things other than gambling also underperformed in the third quarter at $511.6 million, down 5% from a year earlier. Among internet-only entities, Caesars Interactive NJ earned $4.8 million, down 7.8%, and Resorts Digital, the former online arm of Resorts casino, earned $1.5 million, down 4.8%.

CNN —For Donald Trump, every defeat is just the catalyst for his next battle. The Gaetz disaster suggests that despite his big election win, some laws of political gravity still apply to Trump. This may explain why two-and-a-half weeks into his transition, several of Trump’s Cabinet picks are embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, ethics or legal controversy. Like Gaetz, Hegseth was not prosecuted over the allegation and denies he did anything wrong. Plenty of presidents get a Cabinet pick knocked back and do just fine.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday night to reject three efforts led by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders that would have blocked certain offensive weapons sales to Israel. In a speech on the Senate floor ahead of the vote, Sanders argued that the resolutions "would not affect any of the systems Israel uses to defend itself from incoming attacks," focusing instead on offensive weapons. "As I have said many, many times: Israel had the absolute right to respond to that horrific Hamas attack, as any other country would. CNN —House GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced that she will chair a new oversight subcommittee in the next Congress that will work with the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. House Oversight Chair James Comer “intends to establish a new Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) for the 119th Congress,” a source familiar told CNN, confirming that Greene will chair the subcommittee. Comer and Greene, a staunch supporter of President-elect Donald Trump, recently had a meeting with Ramaswamy and his team to discuss the new subcommittee, another source familiar told CNN. The subpanel will examine the salaries and status of members of the federal civil service and intergovernmental personnel among other oversight measures. “I’m excited to chair this new subcommittee designed to work hand in hand with President Trump, Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and the entire DOGE team” Greene said in a statement to CNN.
