New York CNN —The news was so shocking that some “Morning Joe” viewers probably spit out their coffee. MSNBC co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski “went to Mar-a-Lago to meet personally” with President-elect Donald Trump, Brzezinski revealed at the beginning of Monday’s show. We are not here to defend or normalize Donald Trump,” Scarborough said. When Trump entered the presidential race in 2015, he frequently called into “Morning Joe” and schmoozed with the hosts. Trump’s defenders said he was just fighting “fire with fire” because “Morning Joe” was so critical of him.

Not all of Trump’s picks are causing uproar. But in a conventional administration, controversies raging around at least four key Cabinet picks would be seen as a disaster. The president-elect’s son explains the planGaetz and several other Trump picks have caused consternation in some circles given the questions about their qualifications and past behavior. That’s what the American people want.”It would take a handful of Republican senators to block the most provocative Trump nominees early next year, given that Democrats are likely to vote en masse against them. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks are unique for many reasons. Kennedy brings his addiction worldview to prescription drugs such as those overseen by the Food and Drug Administration, which he would oversee if confirmed as HHS secretary. But Musk denied allegations of past drug use as reported in The Wall Street Journal early this year. Federal employees are barred from taking illegal drugs, and there are no reports to indicate that any of Trump’s Cabinet or other administration picks are using illegal drugs. CNN has reported that this year, Trump’s team is bypassing long and cumbersome FBI background checks for some of his Cabinet picks.

Investors may like AT & T for its juicy dividend, but the underlying shares also have "significant upside" ahead, according to Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street investment bank sees a number of factors at play that should boost returns for the Dallas-based telecom giant, which pays a dividend yield of 4.89%. Overall, Schneider anticipates sustained EBITDA growth of 3%, which is 100 to 200 basis points faster growth than Wall Street is currently modeling, he said. That sustained improvement on EBITDA growth should warrant a higher multiple over time, he added. The stock, which hit a 52-week high on Monday, is up 37% year to date, excluding the dividend.

It was just one example of Trump casting a long shadow over a pair of world leader summits taking place in South America this week. Yet to many involved in the discussions, the episode suggested the contention that colored world leader summits during Trump’s first presidency may be poised to return. “You can already see the Trump effect taking hold,” one Western diplomat said as the summit was getting underway. “Trump will only cause more divisions, and more divisions mean less leverage and less influence,” the official went on. “President Biden is that president, he will be handing off power in January, and it will be up to a new administration to decide what to do with it.”

AdvertisementVivek Ramaswamy, cohead of DOGE, said he expects to recommend the wholesale closure of some agencies. Vivek Ramaswamy said to expect the abolishment of entire federal agencies as part of a sweeping restructure envisioned by DOGE. AdvertisementOn Sunday morning, Ramaswamy appeared on Fox News and was asked about DOGE's plans for the future of federal agencies. Maria Bartiromo, the Fox host interviewing Ramaswamy, mentioned the Department of Education as a possible cut, but Ramaswamy instead answered in general terms. Eliminating federal agencies could be a hard ask though.

AdvertisementTrump picked Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead DOGE, a new government efficiency commission. Their aim is to cut government spending, and one idea they've floated is to ax federal agencies. Almost half a million people were employed in the Department of Veterans Affairs, while the Department of Education had just over 4,000. Most departments had six-figure average salaries, with the Department of Education and the Department of Energy having the highest averages. AdvertisementWhile DOGE can advise Trump on agencies to cut, the president-elect cannot act on it alone — making major changes to federal agencies would require congressional approval.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump announced Monday he has selected former congressman and recent Fox Business co-host Sean Duffy to serve as the next secretary of the Department of Transportation. Wednesday marked his last day appearing on Fox Business, and he interviewed for the role of transportation secretary later in the week, according to a source. In the role, Duffy would takeover the department from Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was named to lead the department in February 2021. Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday left the door open to adjourning Congress so President-elect Donald Trump can appoint his Cabinet nominees outside of the usual Senate confirmation process if necessary. Both chambers usually gavel in for pro forma sessions even during times of recess specifically to prevent the president from making recess appointments and bypassing congressional approval. President Barack Obama once tried to use recess appointments and was rebuked by the Supreme Court, which said in 2014 that recesses needed to be 10 days or longer for recess appointments to be legal. Johnson isn’t the only Trump ally who has left the door open to using a recess appointment to confirm Trump’s Cabinet picks. “I have literally not discussed one word about the ethics report, not once, and I’ve been with him quite a bit this week,” Johnson said.

Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s attorney on Sunday confirmed to NBC News that Hegseth, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named as his candidate for defense secretary, paid a woman an undisclosed amount after she accused him of sexual assault. “In 2023, Hegseth paid the complainant as part of a civil confidential settlement agreement and maintains his innocence,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, said in a statement. He also denied that the encounter between Hegseth and an unnamed woman, which she alleges happened in 2017, was sexual assault. Parlatore’s statement comes after The Washington Post on Saturday reported that a friend of Hegseth’s accuser sent a memo to the Trump transition team detailing the allegations. Authorities in Monterey investigated the allegation in 2017 and did not file charges against Hegseth.

And by the way, I do believe that President Trump has the ability to pick some really, really good people. We've seen what they've done to President Trump, we've seen the attacks that they continue to go after him with. That's - that’s being taken completely out of context. And President Trump hasn't been the one that weaponized the DOJ to go after his political enemies. I think that's a pretty controversial pick, from whatever pronoun that he or he - he or she decides to use.

After 30 years in business, Amazon is a $2 trillion behemoth and one of the world's largest retailers. Some critics believed Amazon was doomed to never recover, but founder Jeff Bezos turned things around — with some helpful advice from Jim Sinegal, founder of rival retailer Costco. In October, the Biden administration again helped to intercept a barrage of around 200 Iranian ballistic missiles, which also caused minimal damage to targets in Israel. Bringing US troops homeIn 2020, the Trump administration signed a US withdrawal agreement from Afghanistan with the Taliban. But after McMaster was pushed out of office in 2018, the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban the withdrawal agreement of all US forces from Afghanistan. Nonetheless, the incoming Trump administration seems intent on resurrecting Schedule F, an executive order issued in the last months of the first Trump term.

Here are some of the things Trump has pledged and how or whether they could become reality:Abolishing the Department of EducationPledge: Trump has repeatedly said he will close the federal Department of Education, sending authority over education back to the states and saving taxpayer dollars. Trump has distanced himself from the policy paper, but a CNN review found that at least 140 people who worked in the first Trump administration were involved. How it could be done: It’s not clear how the Trump administration could achieve these goals. WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s consistent campaign pledge to impose sweeping tariffs on products imported into the U.S. is likely to face stiff challenges in court and potentially pushback from Congress. There are potential legal limits to Trump’s authority, even though he has said he would unilaterally impose the increases. But a broad array of tariffs on allies “could cross the line,” especially as the Supreme Court has taken a generally pro-business stance in recent years, he added. During the Biden administration, the Supreme Court embraced a theory called the “major questions doctrine.” Biden’s ambitious plan to wipe out billions of dollars in student debt was one of the proposals the Supreme Court faulted. The Supreme Court declined to take up the issue.

Although Trump claims that his plan to raise tariffs will replace the revenue lost to these tax breaks, experts say that’s not possible. President-elect Donald Trump's tax proposals could cost trillions of dollars. In addition to eliminating taxes on certain income, Trump also floated making interest paid on car loans fully tax deductible; getting rid of the controversial cap on state and local tax deductions; ending the double taxation on Americans who live abroad; exempting police officers, firefighters, veterans and active-duty military from federal income tax; and even exploring jettisoning the federal income tax itself. Though his campaign didn’t release details on the proposal, Trump indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Virtually all tipped workers would get some tax relief if Trump also gets rid of payroll taxes on tips, the Tax Policy Center found.
