Rats are prodigious breeders, with one pair having the potential to produce 15,000 descendants in a year. Switzerland's government said on Wednesday that UBS and three other systemically relevant banks must face tougher capital requirements to shield the country's wider economy, a year after the rescue of Credit Suisse. In 209 pages of recommendations on how to police banks deemed "too big to fail" (TBTF), the Swiss government pitched 22 measures for direct implementation. It stopped short of saying how far stricter capital requirements should go. The increase in requirements for UBS will be "substantial, especially if UBS were to retain its current size and structure, or even grow," it noted in an explanatory document. The Swiss government-backed takeover by UBS of Credit Suisse last year was the biggest merger of banks of systemic importance since the 2007-9 financial crisis.

Medical Debt has grown from a tiny nonprofit group that received less than $3,000 in donations to a multimillion-dollar force in health care philanthropy. Medical Debt estimates that it has eliminated more than $11 billion of debt with the help of major donations from philanthropists and even city governments. But a study published by a group of economists on Monday calls into question the premise of the high-profile charity. After following 213,000 people who were in debt and randomly selecting some to work with the nonprofit group, the researchers found that debt relief did not improve the mental health or the credit scores of debtors, on average. And those whose bills had been paid were just as likely to forgo medical care as those whose bills were left unpaid.

For more mature companies such as McDonald's , it means accelerating new restaurant growth in areas where it's now underrepresented. Tax revenue projections were $1.3 billion higher than expected for the current fiscal year, allowing Mayor Eric Adams to rescind midyear budget cuts that would have affected nearly every city agency. “We’re not surviving — we are thriving in this city,” Mr. Adams said at a recent news conference celebrating the city’s strong bond rating. The recovery of New York City, the nation’s financial capital, is critical to the American economy and to the eight million people who call the city home.
