Stitch Fix’s Unraveling Should Sow Broader Tech Doubts

A business often starts with a relatively modest desire to solve one problem for a specific group of people. Somewhere along the way, it becomes tempting to try to be everything to everyone—especially once it has achieved a supersize tech valuation. The retail styling company went public just over five years ago led by founder Katrina Lake at a valuation of around $1.4 billion. Back then it was a company mixing some data and human judgment to curate personalized boxes of new clothing for customers. That combination earned it a somewhat rich tech-like multiple, even though more than 80% of its employees as of its public offering filing were either human stylists or fulfillment workers.
Big Tech Stops Doing Stupid Stuff

This year tech companies are taking a more earthly approach. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 33% last year—its worst performance since 2008. Big tech, which spent the past several years spending on big dreams, is starting to think smaller. Last year more than 1,000 tech companies laid off employees, resulting in over 150,000 lost jobs, a tally by layoffs.fyi shows. It is an eye- popping number that could actually get worse: More than 23,000 tech workers have already been let go this year as of Jan. 13, the same tracker shows.
Why Our Love Affair With Tinder Might Never Quite End

Tinder has been the world’s number one dating app in terms of revenue for nearly a decade. There is a classic “Seinfeld” episode where Jerry thinks he has found the love of his life in a woman who is exactly like him: “Now I know what I’ve been looking for all these years—myself!”Decades later, dating app companies have seized on research fostering that same “perfect” match. Two behavior-based studies published in 2017 concluded that romantic partners, like friends, often have similar personalities. Another study first published in 2008 found participants’ ideal romantic partner had personality scores similar to their own.

Elon Musk and Cathie Wood Are Almost Right About the Fed
  + stars: | 2022-12-29 | by ( Laura Forman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Some of tech’s biggest losers this year, including Elon Musk and Cathie Wood , haven’t exactly been poster children of successful investing lately. But, especially as tech stocks are starting to look pretty cheap, investors might want to heed at least some of their advice. Both Mr. Musk and Ms. Wood have publicly blamed rising interest rates for their assets’ poor performance. Ms. Wood published an open letter to the Federal Reserve back in October warning that the central bank’s hawkish stance raised the risks of a “deflationary bust.” Replying to an investor’s gripe in a tweet earlier this month over Tesla ‘s recent stock drop, Mr. Musk similarly called the Fed “the real problem.” As the return on risk-free Treasurys rises, he explained in another tweet, the value of owning more-risky equity assets drops.
Turo IPO Won’t Stay Parked Forever

Tech investors looking to explore a new lane of the ride-share market will get their chance. But first, they will want to be a little patient. Nearly 12 months after car-share platform Turo filed for its initial public offering, the company has yet to pull the trigger on its listing. Competitor Getaround has lost over 90% of its value since closing its merger with special-purpose acquisition company InterPrivate II Acquisition Corp. earlier this month. The Nasdaq is down 34% this year, and fellow tech companies like Instacart have also delayed highly anticipated public offerings.
Etsy Looks Crafted to Last

Internet companies are scrambling to refashion themselves in a frenzied market. Etsy , it seems, just woke up like this. Once a fringe online marketplace for crafters, Etsy gained widespread popularity during the pandemic. But unlike many Covid beneficiaries in the e-commerce space, Etsy has achieved gains that have thus far proven durable. Etsy reported more than 94 million active buyers as of the end of the third quarter—down less than 2% from its peak at the end of last year and roughly double the number it counted prepandemic.
Elon Musk Offers Worst Job in Tech

Wanted: Chief executive officer of a flailing tech company who will have no control over that company’s product or distribution. No free lunch. Must be willing to suffer public ridicule and disdain from the company’s owner. It is not exactly the ad that is going to light up LinkedIn. But it is basically what Elon Musk is searching for in his quest for a new “Chief Twit.” Late Tuesday, Mr. Musk said that he will resign as CEO of the social network he bought barely two months ago “as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job!” He added that he still plans to run Twitter’s software and servers teams.

A leading social network is going retro. Instagram Notes, which launched in many countries worldwide this past Tuesday, is “essentially a status update,” said Instagram head Adam Mosseri . Think of it as a 2022 take on a feature Facebook unveiled way back in 2006, then mimicking AOL’s AIM “away message.” Also “new” on Instagram: Candid Stories, a feature being tested as a way for users to share “what’s happening right now” using both the front and the back of the camera at the same time. That is essentially a copycat of Gen Z phenomenon BeReal, but integrated into Instagram Stories.
Netflix's 'Emily in Paris' embraces French life in new season

PARIS, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Cultural frictions give way to personality clashes in Netflix's (NFLX.O) "Emily in Paris," according to creator Darren Star who recently joined the show's cast members in the French capital for the global premiere of the third season. The new season of the television comedy starring Lily Collins as Emily Cooper, an American who moves to Paris from Chicago for a marketing job, will be released on Dec. 21. Kate Walsh, William Abadie, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Samuel Arnold, Lily Collins, Ashley Park, Lucien Laviscount, Camille Razat, Bruno Gouery and Lucas Bravo attend the world premiere of the third season of the Netflix series "Emily in Paris" at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, France, December 6, 2022. In the third season, actors Paul Forman and Melia Kreiling join as new cast members. “New characters come in and add a lot of new texture and complications for the entire ensemble,” said Star.
The couple have been ordered to report to two different federal prisons on January 17, according to the documents. Todd and Julie Chrisley, best known for their reality series “Chrisley Knows Best,” were found guilty in June of conspiracy to defraud banks out of more than $30 million in fraudulent loans. Todd Chrisley, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison with three years of supervised release, has been assigned to serve time at FPC Pensacola, a minimum-security facility in Pensacola, Florida. His wife Julie Chrisley was sentenced to seven years in prison and three years of supervised release. But Todd and Julie are people of faith, and that faith gives them strength as they appeal their convictions.”
Morning Bid: Crude deflation?
  + stars: | 2022-12-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
With everyone on Wall St seemingly hand wringing about stagflation next year, the price of crude oil has plummeted by up to 10% this week to its lowest since early January - offering some relief in an otherwise murky outlook. Crucially for inflation worriers, year-on-year crude price gains - which were running at 50-100% between February's Ukraine invasion and midyear - have now fallen to just 4% and could soon be a disinflationary force in consumer price baskets. But, contrary to many prior energy market assumptions, the impact of Monday G7's Russian oil price cap at $60pb for seaborne crude is anchoring prices and underscoring massive discounts for Russia oil - already selling for as low as $55pb. The Bank of Canada is the latest on the list on Wednesday and expected to hike rates by another half point, as are the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of England next week. European and Asia bourses - even Shanghai and Hong Kong despite the lifting COVID restrictions - were in negative territory too.
PARIS, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The cast of "Emily in Paris" will take to the red carpet in the city of lights Tuesday for the global premiere of season three of the popular Netflix series. Slated for release on Dec. 21, the new season of the television comedy stars Lily Collins as Emily Cooper, an American who has relocated from Chicago to the French capital for a marketing job in the luxury industry. Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who plays the role of Emily's French boss, said that while the series pokes fun at the French, it also takes on Americans, pitting different working styles against one another - but hinted at newfound cooperation between the two cultures. "Emily in Paris" adds two new cast members, Paul Forman and Melia Kreiling, in the upcoming series. How the Grinch Might Steal Pinterest

Pinterest is in the midst of major transformation under a new chief executive officer. The Grinch’s small heart might grow this holiday season—but don’t bank on it beating for Pinterest . Whoville’s Christmas didn’t come from a store in the end, but a lot of social-media money still does. Sitting on inventory amid a tough economic backdrop, retailers this year broadened Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales into a monthlong discount bonanza. Mobile advertising, in particular, seems to have paid off, leading to record digital sales for Thanksgiving Day with mobile shopping driving the majority of sales for the first time through the remainder of Cyber week, according to Adobe Analytics.
This is not the first crypto winter, as long-term fans of bitcoin can attest. “It is very clear that we as an industry need to build better products,” said Hany Rashwan, CEO of 21.co, a crypto investment firm. That’s about triple where prices were during the depths of the crypto bear market in the early pandemic days of 2020. Others point out that the underlying blockchain technology behind bitcoin and crypto remains solid. Pride and Reynolds added that it’s erroneous to think that bitcoin can hold up well during stock market volatility.
With Americans predicted to spend nearly $1,000 each on gifts, Christmas is coming at a bad time. A Gallup poll published in October suggested US households will spend an average of $932 on gifts alone. Add to that increased travel and socializing, and you could be putting yourself in financial peril at the worst possible time. Push gift-giving back a few daysIf you want to carry on gifting, but aren't committed to tradition, you could try gifting in January. Driving the action were several key economic reports, including the November ADP employment and nonfarm payrolls reports and the October personal spending report. The comments came after a softer-than-expected ADP employment report, but before a stronger-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report. With these kinds of mixed signals, expect more market choppiness as investors remain on the hunt for more definitive signs that the Fed is winning its war on inflation and can therefore definitively ease up on their hawkish stance. Initial jobless claims for the week ending Nov. 26 were 225,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the prior week and below expectations of 235,000. Finally, on Friday the all-important nonfarm payrolls report was released, indicating a 263,000 payrolls increase in November, above the 200,000 expected.
CNN —Same old basement, same old Formans but a brand new decade. Instead, “That ’90s Show” features Callie Haverda as granddaughter Leia Forman, along with other up-and-coming stars Ashley Aufderheide, Maxwell Donovan, Mace Coronel, Reyn Doi, Sam Morelos and Andrea Anders. The teaser features the gallivanting kids being told not to dance by Red, before they zone out in a smoky haze (some things never change) and are later kicked out of the house – but not without getting delicious brownies from Kitty. The new show was created by “‘70s Show” creators Bonnie and Terry Turner, this time with their daughter Lindsey Turner, along with showrunner/executive producer Gregg Mettler. “That ’90s Show” will premiere on Netflix on January 19, 2023.
I was heartbroken when I learned that Irene Cara, who starred in the 1980 movie “Fame,” died over the weekend at age 63. Many people seem to like listening to sad music, in part because it’s a stronger trigger for nostalgia than sadness. I always felt like Cara was singing right to me, that she had a window into my emotional experience, which made me feel less alone. I’ve seen the original version of “Fame” a dozen times, always mesmerized by the character Coco, played by Cara. All of which might explain my strong reaction to hearing of Cara’s death even though she was a complete stranger.
Twitter Is Too Musk to Fail

Elon Musk is showing that he is willing to dedicate resources to Twitter to save his reputation as a brilliant and unconventional businessman. At least Elon Musk is having fun. Twitter’s new owner asked his nearly 119 million Twitter followers last week how one can make a small fortune on social media. His reply: “Start out with a large one.”It is probably too soon for that #RIPTwitter hashtag, though. But if Mr. Musk’s first few weeks running Twitter have been a train wreck, few people seem able to look away.
