Elon Musk has started an electric-vehicle price war that Tesla can't finish. In April, Ford CEO Jim Farley said Tesla's cuts could start an unsustainable price war. If it slides back into the red because of its price cuts, expect investors to run in another direction. In China, Tesla's price cuts even sparked protests among owners who paid more for their vehicles. Waging price war during a downturn is a challenge unlike any Tesla has faced before.

Jamaal Bowman (D., N.Y.) hoped a breakfast with Jewish constituents would help alleviate the criticism over his response to Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel. It didn’t go well. Bowman said he voted against the resolution because it didn’t recognize Palestinian victims, according to people who attended the Monday meeting at his White Plains office.

But Then He Had It,” by Sandeep Jauhar (Opinion guest essay, Oct. 28):As a hale elder, about to become 90, I have a terrible fear of getting dementia. I can relate entirely to the way Dr. Jauhar’s father felt in his healthier days, but I think Dr. Jauhar is missing something that his father likely felt, which he may not have articulated in his advance directive. That is certainly what underlies my urgency to beseech my children to allow me to die if I get dementia. Our Merch, Ourselves

Why do we buy merch, or shy away from it? What does the merch you wear say about who you are, what you believe in? Carrying the bag in your own city seemed too boosterish, too earnest for a New Yorker, whereas outside the city, the local merch telegraphs your hometown pride and N.Y.C. Once you leave the place, the merch becomes a souvenir, a nostalgic keepsake. Debating the laws of merch is a diversion, an amusing exercise in questioning our own pieties.

In 1906, Anne Carroll Moore was anointed the first head of the Department of Work With Children at the New York Public Library. There she oversaw the creation of the Central Children’s Room at the newly built flagship on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, established story hours and opened the previously locked shelves to all children provided they agreed to sign a pledge that read: “When I write my name in this book I promise to take good care of the books I use in the Library and at home, and to obey the rules of the Library.” By 1913, one third of the titles borrowed from all branches of the N.Y.P.L. were children’s books. To celebrate this year’s Best Illustrated Children’s Books, we looked through archival photos of the library’s children’s reading rooms.

Consumers See Worsening Economy, Higher Inflation
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( Tim Smart | Nov. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +4 min
Consumers continued to sour on the economic outlook in November while also growing more pessimistic about future inflation, according to the first estimate from the University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey. The index of consumer sentiment fell 5% to a reading of 60.4, down from 63.8 in October. “Ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine weighed on many consumers as well.”“Overall, lower-income consumers and younger consumers exhibited the strongest declines in sentiment,” Hsu added. Various surveys measuring the minds of consumers have found them to be worried about inflation and the economy in general. “Consumer sentiment continues to trend downward at a moderate pace as consumers attempt to juggle inflation and higher interest rates,” said Damian McIntyre, Portfolio manager and head of multi asset solutions at Federated Hermes.

The galaxy, named ceers-2112, is more than 11.7 billion years old and is the earliest example of a barred spiral galaxy ever seen. For them, there is little doubt: this picture suggests this is a barred spiral galaxy. Scientists had thought you couldn't find a barred spiral galaxy before the universe was about 6.9 billion years old. The other 95% — about 27% of dark matter and 68% of dark energy — remain huge mysteries in physics.

People No Longer Know How Much to Tip

Some 40% of Americans oppose suggested tips, the Pew Research Center found. Photo: Nam Y. Huh/Associated PressTipping can be seen as an obligation or a choice—and, a new study shows, the answer often varies by generation. Younger people are more likely to tip by default, while older consumers tend to say it is a personal decision, a new survey from the Pew Research Center found. Our attitudes about when and how much to tip have been reshaped by all the screens prompting us for gratuities at cafes and other businesses. There is one area of consensus: Nearly three-quarters said they now get hit up for tips much more often than five years ago.

Ms. Anderson mentions the former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley as a viable alternative to Mr. Trump. But in terms of good fiscal governance and foreign policy, I believe that Ms. Haley is even more misguided than Mr. Trump. It is strategically savvy of them not to level any direct harsh criticism at Mr. Trump. Perhaps the reason they have not yet done so convincingly is that they are not running “against” Mr. Trump. Several of them are likely running for vice president, and that would preclude discussing their differences.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is requiring state health officials to develop an outreach program to educate parents and doctors about the harmful impacts of medically unnecessary treatments performed on young children born intersex. Advocates for the statewide legislation say the medically unnecessary operations on infants and young children born intersex come with a slew of potential negative impacts that parents and doctors must be aware of. Various health and human rights organizations, including the Physicians for Human Rights, a U.S.-based nonprofit that advocates against human rights violations around the world, in the past have called for an end to the medical treatments. A majority of advocacy groups estimate that there are about 5.6 million people in the United States who were born intersex, according to The Associated Press. In California, a majority of state lawmakers rejected a bill in 2020 that would have banned some medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex children until they are old enough to participate in the decision.

That raised the total of rookie starting QBs this season to nine, tying the non-replacement record set in 2019. "Looksmaxxing" is the Tiktok trend taking hold among some young men who want to be better-looking. The New York Times wrote about the trend, which has shifted from a friendlier version on Tiktok, where handsome men give basic advice. The story points out that much of the TikTok version of the trend is simply helpful, basic advice, and the target audience is often young teenage men — a demographic that can be hygienically challenged. Calling these basic tips "looksmaxxing" — and treating it like getting "facial gains" — is silly. But this is the first time we're seeing swaths of young men gathering online to talk about it with these meme-y terms like "mogging" (looking hotter than someone else).
