Donors understand as well as anyone that pulling their funds won’t inflict significant financial damage on Ivy League institutions, which boast huge endowments, my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn reports. But he said that financial threats from donors were not the right solution to influencing universities’ positions on these issues. At 5 million subscribers paying $3.99 a month, Snapchat+ is set to earn around $239 million in annual revenue. Still, analysts are intrigued by Snap’s user growth, especially for a company that’s been around for over a decade. “In my view, there’s significant value for a company that’s growing its installed base at this level,” said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research.

The Discord app is seen on an iPhone in this photo illustration in Warsaw, Poland on April 3, 2021. Two years ago, during the height of tech market froth, Discord was valued at $15 billion, more than doubling in a matter of months. But Discord has stood pat, avoiding a return to the capital markets, even as public funds have reduced the value of their shares. Discord, which ranked 18th on this year's CNBC's Disruptor 50 list, is now pushing into a new business as it seeks to justify that lofty valuation. Within the new marketplace, Halloween-themed avatar decorations, including a black cat resting on a gravestone, will be available to users for $8, Sellis said.

Meta, which owns Instagram, addressed its efforts to balance safety and speech in a blog post about the war on Friday. It noted that it established a special operations center with expert monitors working in Hebrew and Arabic, who removed or flagged more than 795,000 pieces of harmful content in the first three days of the conflict. The company also said that Instagram allows users to control how much sensitive content they are recommended. The platform said it is automatically detecting and removing graphic and violent content, placing opt-in screens over disturbing images and adding restrictions to its livestreaming function amid the hostage situation. The youthful playoff infusion is the continuation of one of the best regular seasons for rookie hitters in MLB history. Five rookies — Carter, Carroll, Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson and Minnesota’s Royce Lewis and Edouard Julien — had OPS totals over 1.000, and Jung wasn’t far behind at .947. “I’d say adrenaline-wise, it’s probably felt about the same as the regular season, maybe a tiny bit more,” Carroll said. It's probably no coincidence that the Rangers started to struggle around the time he got hurt — the third baseman hit 23 homers during the regular season. Texas had a 73-49 record in games he played during the regular season and a 17-23 mark when he didn't.

REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 16 (Reuters) - Snap (SNAP.N) shares jumped 11% on Monday after a media report said the social media company is expected to have more than 475 million daily active users (DAUs) in 2024, above Wall Street expectations. Snap also expects advertising revenue to grow more than 20% in 2024 as part of its "stretch goals", the report said, putting it above Wall Street estimates of 14% growth. Snap was the first ad-reliant social media firm to flag a demand downturn last year as brands cut budgets amid red-hot inflation and high interest rates. Macroeconomic woes coupled with rising competition from social media platforms like Tiktok, saw Snap lose 80% of its valuation last year.

If the world's leading AI researchers use Llama, Meta could have an easier time hiring skilled technologists who understand the company's approach to development. Although a number of open source LLMs are available, Lambert said Llama 2 is by far the most popular. CNN —Australia issued a fine of $610,500 Australian dollars ($386,000) on Monday against the company formerly known as Twitter for “falling short” in disclosing information on how it tackles child sex abuse content, in yet another setback for the Elon Musk-owned social media platform. Just days earlier, the European Commission formally opened an investigation into X after issuing a previous warning about disinformation and illegal content on its platform linked to the Israel-Hamas war. Australia’s e-Safety Commission, the online safety regulator, said in a statement Monday that X had failed to adequately respond to a number of questions about the way it was dealing with the problem of child abuse materials. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment by CNN. The American tech giant has been given a formal warning to deter it from future non-compliance, it added.

REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 16 (Reuters) - The global smartphone market contracted by 8% to its lowest third-quarter level in a decade on subdued demand for major brands including Apple (AAPL.O) and Samsung (005930.KS) in most developed markets, according to data from Counterpoint Research. Market leader Samsung posted a 13% drop in sell-through volumes in the period. It said the festive season in India, the 11.11 sale event in China and end-of-year promotions across regions would also support the market. So far, emerging markets have been a bright spot for smartphone sales in an otherwise dour year. In the third quarter, the Middle East and Africa were the only regions to record year-on-year growth, according to Counterpoint data.

Snap shares rose nearly 12% on Monday following reports of an internal CEO memo indicating that the social messaging company could post better-than-expected results for 2024. Snap confirmed the numbers cited in the memo with CNBC but characterized them as "stretch, internal goals only." Snap shares sank more than 17% in July after it gave guidance for its current quarter that missed analysts' expectations. Analysts at Wells Fargo estimated that Ford will lose about $150 million per week in core profit from the Kentucky plant strike. Even with 8,700 workers at Ford's Kentucky Truck plant now on strike, less than a quarter of the 150,000 UAW workers at the Detroit Three automakers are now on strike. Ford warned on Wednesday that workers at a dozen other factories could be sent home because of the truck plant walkout. Its Kentucky truck plant, the company's most profitable operation, generates $25 billion in annual sales, about a sixth of Ford's global automotive revenue.
