But prices are shooting up in Jersey City as its neighbors refuse to build. AdvertisementAdvertisementNew Yorkers have been taking notice of Jersey City real estate for years, and its popularity as an alternative to the ever-less-affordable housing market in the city is growing. Between 2010 and 2018, Hudson County, which includes Jersey City, built housing at more than twice the rate that New York City did. New housing in Jersey City is overwhelmingly market rate rather than being explicitly built as affordable housing for lower- and middle-income residents. "The issues facing Jersey City tenants are multifaceted, but the primary concern is to guarantee housing stability."

Washington CNN —An antitrust lawsuit from 17 states and the Federal Trade Commission this week against Amazon represents the US government’s biggest regulatory challenge yet against the e-commerce juggernaut. The landmark case targets Amazon’s retail platform, alleging that it’s harmed shoppers and sellers alike on a massive scale. Here are five of the biggest highlights and takeaways from the plaintiffs’ 172-page lawsuit. Just this month, the FTC added three Amazon officials to a separate consumer protection case dealing with Amazon Prime. Instead, the plaintiffs have to show that Amazon is part of a well-defined geographic and economic market that it dominates.

Amazon has a poor man’s monopoly

The $1.3 trillion retailer run by Andy Jassy was sued on Tuesday by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for alleged anticompetitive practices. She rose to prominence after publishing a paper in the Yale Law Journal in 2017 titled “Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox,” which painted the e-commerce giant as a sprawling monopoly that has gone unchecked by traditional antitrust policing. But Chinese competitors like Shein and Temu, which have different cost structures, are starting to encroach on Amazon’s market. It's possible that Khan and the FTC can nail Amazon in court for behaviors that in the past have given it an exclusive edge. Follow @thereallsl on XCONTEXT NEWSThe U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed an antitrust lawsuit against Amazon.com on Tuesday, asking the court to consider forcing the online retailer to sell assets.

The U.S. consumer agency, which enforces federal antitrust law, and 17 states filed their lawsuit against Amazon in Seattle federal court on Tuesday, asking a U.S. judge to consider an injunction and other penalties to combat alleged unlawful conduct. The FTC's lawsuit is related to but broader than a series of private consumer cases filed in recent years against Amazon that are pending in the same U.S. federal court. The private antitrust cases offer an early window into some of the legal arguments Amazon could be expected to make to challenge the FTC's lawsuit. Generally speaking, U.S. judges are "wary of using antitrust law to punish low-pricing behavior," said antitrust scholar Sean Sullivan of the University of Iowa's law school. Sullivan said it is not always a clear line between "good low pricing" — based on market competition — and "bad low pricing" that helps a company acquire or maintain market power.

FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan testifies during a budget hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce, April 18, 2023. Khan pointed to scale on Wednesday as a way Amazon leverages its power to dampen competition. Khan also explained the FTC's decision to define the market Amazon has monopolized as the online superstore. "We've had a whole set of antitrust cases that have succeeded when defining a market as the superstore market." This complaint applies that idea to the online world, Khan said, adding that there are functions that only an online superstore can serve through the "depth and breadth" of offerings.

Lina Khan vs. Amazon - The New York Times

The Federal Trade Commission’s chair, Lina Khan, has brought her long-awaited, audacious case against Amazon, signaling the Biden administration’s determination to restore an approach to competition law that has been in decline since the Carter administration. But Amazon is precisely the kind of company that Congress had in mind in enacting America’s many antitrust laws. The robber barons of that era hijacked the economy and politics, but they also faced the constraints of empires grounded in physical goods. Today’s tech barons at huge platforms like Amazon, Google and Meta can deploy anticompetitive, deceptive and unfair tactics with the agility and speed of a digital system. And Amazon is the apex predator of our platform era.

Energy Security Minister Claire Coutinho said that Rosebank would be less emissions-intensive compared with older oil and gas developments because they were designed with mitigations in place. Environmental campaigners had urged the government to halt development of Rosebank, saying it contravened the plan for a net-zero economy. Uplift, a campaign group opposed to Rosebank, said Britain would struggle to benefit from Rosebank as most of the oil would be processed abroad. "By approving Rosebank, Rishi Sunak has confirmed he couldn't care less about climate change," Uplift executive director Tessa Khan said. The North Sea Transition Authority, the UK regulator, said it had taken Rosebank's emissions into account in relation to Britain's climate plan.

CNN —The British government approved the development of a huge oil and gas field in the North Sea Wednesday, sealing its commitment to keep producing fossil fuels for decades to come. “We have today approved the Rosebank Field Development Plan which allows the owners to proceed with their project,” said a spokesperson for oil and gas regulator the North Sea Transition Authority in a statement. The spokesperson added the decision had been made “taking net zero considerations into account throughout the project’s lifecycle.” Net zero is where the world removes at least as much planet-heating pollution as it emits. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently said he wanted to “max out” oil and gas developments in the North Sea and issue hundreds of new licenses. “Even when we’ve reached net zero in 2050, a quarter of our energy needs will come from oil and gas.

Shopify invests in wholesale platform Faire

REUTERS/Chris Wattie/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - E-commerce giant Shopify (SHOP.TO) is investing in wholesale platform Faire, the companies said on Wednesday, in a global deal that would see the start-up adopt Shopify technology for its clients. Faire, founded in 2017 and valued at $12.59 billion, would become the recommended wholesale marketplace for Shopify merchants. Shopify's director of product Aneeqa Khan said the partnership would make it easy for Shopify merchants to find wholesale buyers, and enable retailers to source from Faire's network of brands. Faire said the most popular search filter on its platform is "Not on Amazon", as retailers look to source less widely available products. For Shopify, which sells tools to create and manage online store-fronts, this is the latest in a series of deals.

At least $4.5 trillion a year in clean-energy investments will be needed by the start of the 2030s to reach net zero by 2050, the IEA said. “We have the tools needed to go much faster,” the report said. It estimates that 80% of the emissions reduction needed by 2030 can come from increasing renewable generation, energy efficiency and electrification, as well as from cutting methane emissions. The new report comes as policies toward green energy globally are at a crossroads, with politicians balancing green ambitions with energy security and a cost-of-living squeeze. “Without efforts to reduce methane emissions from fossil fuel supply, global energy sector CO2 emissions would need to reach net zero by around 2045,” the report said.

UPS to hire 100,000 holiday workers with Teamsters pay bump
  + stars: | 2023-09-26 | by ( Melina Khan | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
UPS plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal workers again this year to support the holiday shipping rush, the company announced Tuesday in a press release. As a result of a contract agreement with the Teamsters union that was ratified in August, seasonal workers' pay will start between $21 and $23 per hour, depending on the position. The Teamsters deal with UPS comes as workers from pilots to aerospace manufacturing employees have pushed for and won higher pay. Nearly 80% of the company's seasonal positions do not require an interview, UPS said in the release. The carrier hired the same number of seasonal workers in 2022.

The Federal Trade Commission has filed its long-anticipated antitrust lawsuit against Amazon . In a sweeping complaint unveiled Tuesday, the FTC and attorneys general from 17 states accused Amazon of wielding its "monopoly power" to inflate prices, degrade quality for shoppers and unlawfully exclude rivals, thereby undermining competition. David Zapolsky, Amazon's general counsel and senior vice president of global public policy, said in a statement that the FTC's complaint is "wrong on the facts and the law." The lawsuit is a major milestone for FTC Chair Lina Khan, who rose to prominence for her 2017 Yale Law Journal note, "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox." Through her work at the FTC, Khan has sought to reset that framework and push the boundaries of antitrust law through risky legal battles.

Amazon is facing an antitrust lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission and 17 states. The suit claims Amazon is leveraging its power to inflate prices and overcharge small sellers. The FTC has been gathering evidence for months to show how Amazon disadvantages sellers. Some of the agency's allegations in the Amazon case mirrors those made in a separate lawsuit last year by the state of California. The federal complaint follows other actions the FTC has taken against Amazon in the past few months.
