REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationLONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Arm is phoning Big Tech friends for help with its initial public offering. Backing from some of the world’s largest technology companies would also provide a useful marketing boost. Investments from big tech companies risk scrutiny from antitrust regulators, who previously blocked chip specialist Nvidia from buying Arm. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsArm and its owner, Japan’s SoftBank Group (9984.T), will therefore need to win over big institutional investors. That’s well below the $60 billion to $70 billion that Bloomberg recently reported Arm is aiming for.

Merger arbitrage investors have been struggling this year. Play the gap Merger arbitrage can be a tricky strategy for regular investors to incorporate. Investors can buy into the following funds for exposure to merger arbitrage: The Arbitrage Fund (ARBNX) The Merger Fund (MERIX) The NexPoint Merger Arbitrage fund (HMEAX) The First Trust Merger Arbitrage ETF (MARB) The IQ Merger Arbitrage ETF (MNA) To be sure, many of these funds charge a hefty fee. Kroger and Albertsons , the two largest biggest grocers by revenue, just notched a regulatory win after a judge dismissed a consumer lawsuit challenging the $25 billion merger. REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch/File PhotoBERLIN, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Semiconductor shortages that have created bottlenecks for Germany's car industry will take years to resolve despite chipmakers' plans to build factories in the country, a senior Audi manager was quoted as saying on Friday. Executives and policymakers are re-thinking supply lines and trying to reduce reliance on a handful of Asian and U.S. chip suppliers. Chipmakers such as U.S. Intel (INTC.O) and Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW) this year announced plans to build factories in Germany. Ukraine's recent waterborne drone attacks have shed light on weaknesses in Russian defenses. Prior to the hits on Olenegorsky Gornyak and Sig, previous naval drone attacks have terrorized Russian ships in the Black Sea. United 24/Ukrainian government'Too many to take out'With the drone attacks showing no sign of stopping, the questions become how Russia will respond. And if Russia does ramp up its defenses, it's likely that Ukraine will scale up the number of its drone boats. Operating a group of drone boats, Clark added, is more difficult given water conditions, weather, and the potential to ram into unintended targets.

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices is an "emerging growth opportunity" in artificial intelligence, according to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Investment strategist Daniel Skelly said he added the chipmaker to the firm's equity model portfolio. He noted that AMD is "a leader in chip end markets with potential AI tailwinds." "We viewed AMD's 2Q23 print constructively as management indicated improving business conditions into the second half of the year," Skelly said. "With data center revenue growth troughing, we believe investors should look through to a 2024 inventory re-build that is supported by tailwinds from AI."

Ukrainian drones are attacking Russian ships and tankers, wrecking critical sea supply lanes. It's the latest incident involving Ukrainian sea drones hitting vital Russian naval targets, weakening sea supply lanes and proving Kyiv to be a scrappy, formidable naval force while lacking an actual fleet beyond some patrol boats. "The attacks show that USV operations are increasingly a major component of modern naval warfare and can be turned against the weakest links of Russia's sea supply lanes," the UK intel update said. Ukraine has made the development of sea drones a priority, even crowdfunding for what they call "the formation of the world's first naval fleet of drones." An expert previously told Insider the remotely operated, cheap-but-effective waterborne drones give Ukraine an "asymmetric advantage," stressing Russian defenses and resources.

"No one is coming for Nvidia on AI, period, any time soon," Stifel analyst Ruben Roy told CNBC in an interview Wednesday. The new version of Grace Hopper primarily delivers improvements in memory capacity and bandwidth compared with the first-generation product. In practice, improving the memory capacity and bandwidth of the Grace Hopper Superchip should help AI applications run more efficiently and smoothly. Volume production of the improved Grace Hopper Superchip is expected in the second quarter of 2024, according to Nvidia. Open-source software Nvidia's closed-source CUDA software platform – along with a library of pre-trained AI models — has helped establish the company's AI dominance.

The law also prohibits funding recipients from expanding semiconductor manufacturing in China or other countries deemed a national security risk by the United States government. A year after President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law, the U.S. semiconductor industry is still waiting on the windfall. The potential for federal funding has spurred some potential huge investments in the semiconductor sector. "The back-end semiconductor manufacturing sector that Integra participates in, operates on very thin margins that just don't make it possible without the CHIPS Act support to do this," Integra CEO Brett Robinson said. Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and silicon carbide producer Wolfspeed have all hired workers and started construction despite not receiving any federal CHIPS Act funding.

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC on Tuesday committed 3.5 billion euros ($3.8 billion) to a factory in Germany, its first in Europe, taking advantage of huge state support for the $11 billion plant as the continent seeks to bring supply chains closer to home. TSMC said it would invest up to 3.499 billion euros into a subsidiary, European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC), of which it will own 70%. The factory will cost around 10 billion euros in total. “There is going to be a real ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing in Germany,” he said. TSMC said in a statement after a board meeting that approved the German investment that it had also approved a capital injection of not more than $4.5 billion for the Arizona plant as part of the overall $40 billion investment.

Russia is granting its 200,000-strong national guard force heavy weaponry, the UK MOD said. This shows how the Kremlin sees the force as key to ensuring "regime security," per the MOD. While its leader bragged of its response to the Wagner mutiny, there's no sign it did much, the MOD said. Reports have suggested that Putin has become increasingly isolated and paranoid since he launched the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Reports of a paranoid Putin have only intensified since the Wagner Group's mini-mutiny, which could lead to a bigger role for the national guard.

AI is being held up by a shortage of powerful chips
  + stars: | 2023-08-06 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —The crushing demand for AI has also revealed the limits of the global supply chain for powerful chips used to develop and field AI models. The latest sign of a potentially extended shortage in AI chips came in Microsoft’s annual report recently. In its May earnings call, Nvidia said it had “procured substantially higher supply for the second half of the year” to meet the rising demand for AI chips. AMD, meanwhile, said Tuesday it expects to unveil its answer to Nvidia’s AI GPUs closer to the end of the year. The chip shortage is expected to ease as more manufacturing comes online and as competitors to Nvidia also expand their offerings.
