African penguins can swim up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) a day, he said, but in captivity, their muscle mass decreases.
But, amid the destruction, the typhoon was a boon for little Pen, Imai said.
“She survived because of the typhoon,” Imai said.
“It was almost miraculous timing.”Pen's keeper, Ryosuke Imai, rescued Pen after someone spotted her on a beach 45 kilometers from where she escaped.
“When we first received the report, I couldn’t believe there was really a penguin,” Imai said.
