With minor exceptions, the major categories were filled in the expected ways when the 2023 Primetime Emmys nominations were announced on Wednesday. Some surprises cropped up further down the page, where the members of the Television Academy apparently started checking off every name they saw from favored shows like “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus.”Snub: Taylor SheridanHe may be the most successful maker of television currently working, but Sheridan gets no respect at the Emmys. But it was a mild shock to see a second Disney+ “Star Wars” show (along with “Andor”) break through in the limited-series category. Ewan McGregor, who reprised his Obi-Wan role from the prequel films, apparently draws a lot of good will. The merger of TV comedy into satirical drama is just about complete.

Dragons, Jedi and zombies find a seat at the Emmy table

CNN —Dragons and zombies and Jedi, oh my. HBO’s gaudy show of force – with half the best-drama nominees and 127 bids overall, the highest total of any individual network or service – featured a combination of both. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," starring Ewan McGregor, was one of three "Star Wars" series to receive multiple Emmy nominations. Fabio Lovino/HBOWhen those nominees need to begin rehearsing their acceptance speeches is itself a source of mystery as of now. (Reuters) - Two Georgia election workers suing Rudy Giuliani for defamation asked a U.S. judge on Tuesday to decide the lawsuit in their favor, arguing that the former New York mayor and personal lawyer for Donald Trump forfeited the case by allegedly failing to preserve important evidence. Lawyers for the pair asked a Washington, D.C. federal judge to levy “severe” sanctions against Giuliani, including a default judgment finding Giuliani liable for defamation. Attorneys for Giuliani and the election workers did not immediately return requests for comment. Ted Goodman, a political adviser to Giuliani, said the evidence requests were “deliberately overly burdensome” and sought information aimed at embarrassing and intimidating Giuliani. Lawyers for the election workers said in a court filing that those efforts collapsed after Giuliani did not agree.

Berkshire Hathaway is poised to score a $1 billion profit after Microsoft prevailed against the FTC in its bid to acquire Activision. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway owned nearly 50 million shares of Activision at the end of the first quarter. Berkshire Hathaway first purchased a stake in Activision Blizzard in the fourth quarter of 2021, just a few months before Microsoft announced its proposed acquisition of Activision. Berkshire Hathaway ultimately built its Activision stake to a peak of 68.4 million shares in the second quarter of 2022 at an estimated weighted average price of $73.95 per share, Insider calculated. Since then, the conglomerate pared down its position in the third, fourth, and first quarters of 2022 and 2023, respectively, to 49.7 million shares.

Those Hall of Famers — like Stan Musial, Derek Jeter and so many other greats — had something in common: Except for the All-Star Game, they never changed teams. That singular identity gives their stars extra glimmer, but largely removes them from a new game sweeping the baseball landscape. The name is Immaculate Grid, and with apologies to the surging Atlanta Braves — who had eight selections for the National League’s team in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Seattle — it’s the hottest thing going in the sport. The grid — named for the immaculate inning, in which a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches — is a daily quiz in the form of a tic-tac-toe board designed by Brian Minter, a software developer in suburban Atlanta. He said the game averages about 200,000 players every weekday.

More than four years of family conflict over the estate of Aretha Franklin ended Tuesday when a Michigan jury decided what her family could not — which of two hand-scrawled wills represented the famed singer’s true wishes for how to divide her estate. The verdict resolved more than four years of uncertainty that caused a rift in Franklin’s family, and it sets in motion a plan for how income and assets from her estate should be divided. After the singer died, at age 76, her family believed she had no will. Under Michigan law, her assets would have been divided equally among her four sons: Kecalf, Edward and Clarence Franklin, and Ted White Jr. The sons unanimously selected a cousin as the estate’s personal representative, a position similar to that of an executor.

Junk fees are additional, often hidden, charges that can come from a range of lenders. Overdraft fees are a good example of a 'game of whack-a-mole' when it comes to fees. Ted Rossman senior industry analyst at Bankrate"Overdraft fees are a good example of a 'game of whack-a-mole' when it comes to fees," Rossman said. "The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau took a big step by banning surprise overdraft fees," she said. The average overdraft fee costs $29.80, Bankrate's research found, while the average nonsufficient funds fee is $26.58.

Instead, she jotted down her wishes on two handwritten wills — one dated in 2010 and another in 2014. The legal dispute over the estate was between her sons, who disagreed over which handwritten will should govern their mother's estate. One son, Ted White II, thought the 2010 will should control the estate, while two other sons, Kecalf Franklin and Edward Franklin, favored the 2014 document, according to the Associated Press. That may also happen if a decedent owns property in "joint tenancy," whereby two or more people own the property together, Douglas said. This legal arrangement dictates that the surviving spouse inherits the account, taking precedence over the language in a will, Douglas said.

Roland Gutierrez, a Democratic state senator who has been an outspoken gun-control proponent since last year’s massacre in Uvalde, Texas, announced on Monday that he would seek Senator Ted Cruz’s seat next year. Mr. Gutierrez, whose district stretches from San Antonio to the Rio Grande and includes Uvalde, is the second major Democratic politician to enter the race, most likely ensuring a high-profile primary contest among Texas Democrats. Representative Colin Allred, a second-term congressman from the Dallas area, declared his candidacy in May. Both candidates have entered the race vowing to focus their attacks on Mr. Cruz rather than on any Democratic rivals. He is a familiar face on cable news, commenting not only on the killings in Uvalde and the delayed police response but also on other mass shootings.

Biden reportedly yells at White House staffers behind closed doors, sometimes in profanity-laced comments. The image of an angry Biden contrasts with the president's more avuncular public persona. Chris Whipple, who wrote the definitive book on White House chiefs of staff, said that the current commander-in-chief "definitely" has a temper. It may not be as volcanic as Bill Clinton's, but it's definitely there," Whipple told Axios. In his book about the Biden White House, Whipple wrote how then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki told Biden she knew she had gained his trust when he would finally unload on her.

Without following the words, it would be nearly impossible to have any idea what was going on in this non-narrative but intensely text-focused work. The attempt to tie together the work’s many thematic strands by enacting onstage what Hearne’s program note called “a new corporation, powered by quasi-religious fervor,” was confusing — though maybe things were clearer in the original, outdoor conception. The central pairing of Penn and Bezos, the two pioneers — their vast differences, their essential similarities — would probably have been a more than sufficient subject here. To what extent are Bezos’s manipulative doublespeak and high-minded invocations of empowerment through selling a break with Penn’s colonial promises? To what degree are they merely a continuation of what were sour lies to begin with?

At issue in the trial is which document best reflects Franklin’s wishes before she died, at age 76, of pancreatic cancer. Two of her sons, Edward and Kecalf Franklin, assert that the document found in a spiral notebook under the couch cushions, which is dated March 2014 and substantially favors Kecalf, should be considered primary. Another son, Ted White Jr., contends that the papers found in the cabinet, dated June 2010, should take precedence. As a result, they will not be taking a side in the trial, said Joseph Buttiglieri, a lawyer for Clarence Franklin’s guardian. The total estate was estimated at about $18 million after she died, Mr. Smith said, though another appraisal suggested the figure might be lower.

All those candidates, however, then proceeded to lose the New Hampshire primary and the party nomination. Only 26% of New Hampshire Republican primary voters identified the same way. Trump has also been weaker among demographic groups who make up a larger share of the New Hampshire Republican electorate. Although the 2016 Iowa entrance poll did not ask about income, the 2020 general election exit poll did. (Note: Household and family income are somewhat different measures, but I’m merely demonstrating that New Hampshire Republicans are, on the whole, wealthier than Iowa Republicans.)

Some US schools are deploying robots to beef up campus security, The Wall Street Journal reported. Some US schools are turning to robots to help beef up campus security and potentially confront intruders, The Wall Street Journal reported. Last June, the Biden Administration signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which invests millions of dollars into mental health services and school security. It has a speaker system that can allow a remote security team to speak to an intruder. At Wyandotte Public Schools district in Oklahoma, Superintendent Brad Wade told the Journal the district plans to deploy four robots from Stokes Robotics, which sells quadruped and wheeled robots.

Hollywood writers are entering their third month on strike. Film and TV writers say they're among those who have fared the worst as their industry has been remade, even as others reap the rewards. Either way, the bottom line is this: Everyone in Hollywood is afraid that the robots are coming for their jobs, Terminator-style. Now, they're some of the dominant forces controlling new content development in the entertainment industry. Recently, I reported on how the Hollywood writers' strike is dispiriting industry hopefuls at the outset of their careers — you can read it here.

CNN —An attorney disciplinary committee has recommended Rudy Giuliani be disbarred in Washington, DC, for his efforts on behalf of then-President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 election results. “He claimed massive election fraud but had no evidence of it,” the committee wrote. “By prosecuting that destructive case Mr. Giuliani, a sworn officer of the Court, forfeited his right to practice law. He should be disbarred.”The panel’s recommendation is not final; the case against Giuliani still must be considered by DC’s Board on Professional Responsibility and by the DC court of appeals. Rudy Giuliani should be disbarred, a DC legal ethics panel says. The Washington DC Board on Professional Responsibility slammed his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, attacked the DC Bar Association in response to the board's recommendation. Opinion: Biden has a Kennedy problem

CNN —President Joe Biden might have a Kennedy problem. There are many reasons Kennedy might cause trouble for Biden. At the end of last year, Biden switched the Democratic primary schedule to put South Carolina first. As a result, Biden might not even appear on the New Hampshire ballot, effectively ceding the state to Kennedy and author and speaker Marianne Williamson. Many of Biden’s 2020 supporters are frustrated with the president, and any attacks Kennedy will unleash could damage Biden and provide a foundation for Republicans to go after him in the campaign.
