Warning: This article contains disturbing descriptions about the practices of colonial settlers in Tasmania and violence against Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples. “In all, Allport shipped five Tasmanian Aboriginal skeletons to Europe, proudly identifying himself as the most prolific trader in Tasmanian bodily remains,” according to the study. The colonial government allowed settlers to murder Tasmanian Aboriginal people without punishment and, in 1830, even established a bounty for the capture of Indigenous humans and Tasmanian tigers, or thylacines. Some Aboriginal Tasmanian people did survive colonial persecution, Ashby added, though at brutal costs. Their descendants make up today’s Tasmanian Aboriginal community, Ashby said.

Rebecca Yarros confirmed Violet Sorrengail has a second signet power in the "Empyrean" series. After the book's release, Yarros said Violet's second signet had already manifested in "Iron Flame." Violet's second signet power could be many things, but fans have a few ideasThere are multiple popular theories on what Violet's signet may be, but the three most popular theories are distance wielding, communicating with the dead, and amplifying other people's powers. Some readers also think Violet's second signet is an amplification of other people's signets, which would allow her to make the people around her more powerful. Only the third book will reveal what Violet's second signet is, though fans may be waiting for a while.

Review: This ‘House of Bernarda Alba’ Is on Fire
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Matt Wolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The ground is breathing fire, we’re told, in “The House of Bernarda Alba,” the Spanish classic by Federico García Lorca that opened Tuesday at the National Theater in London in a ferocious new version by Alice Birch. The show runs through Jan. 6. Directed by Rebecca Frecknall and starring Harriet Walter from “Succession” in the imperious title role, it really is scorching. Lorca’s play about a tough-as-nails matriarch and her five unmarried daughters in 1930s Andalusia is regularly revived in theaters in England, but I’ve never seen an ensemble so fully committed to the play, which races toward its tragic finish with genuinely shocking force. As Frecknall has demonstrated in work including that of Tennessee Williams and the Broadway-bound revival of “Cabaret,” she has a gift for reinvigorating familiar titles as though they were brand new.

On Wednesday, crowds gathered to say goodbye and catch one final look at Yang Guang and Tian Tian, who for 12 years have enraptured millions of visitors and residents of Edinburgh. “We’ve flown up for the day; we must be mad,” Lauren Darling, who recently visited the zoo, told The Telegraph. But American zoo officials and scientists said that it came down to biology, or “panda time,” since the three pandas should be going back to China because they are at an advanced age. A similar reason was cited by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. The pandas, the zoo said, arrived in Edinburgh in December 2011 as part of a 10-year arrangement between the organization’s charity and the China Wildlife Conservation Association, which allowed them to keep the pandas an extra two years because of the pandemic.

Did you try to be more authentic this year? Were you trying to figure out what "authentic" even means? Either way, you weren't alone: It's Merriam-Webster's word of the year for 2023, an annual recognition given to a word that dominates searches and lookup volume on the dictionary's website. It's an important distinction: Coming across as phony can be alienating, while conveying authenticity can help you amass popularity and inspire others, surveys show. Trying too hard to be natural or relatable often seems fake, Merriam-Webster's announcement noted: "Ironically, with 'authentic content creators' now recognized as the gold standard for building trust, 'authenticity' has become a performance."

The Cybertruck launch is a critical one for Tesla, whose sales growth has slowed. President Joe Biden took aim at corporations Monday for charging prices he said were artificially high even though the rate of inflation has slowed and some shipping costs have fallen. "We understand that people are still not feeling it, we get that," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday, ahead of the president's supply chain event. The price hikes were driven by a combination of pent-up consumer demand, pandemic-era ecomonic stimulus and ongoing supply chain snarls. Biden's new Supply Chain Resilience Council, launched Monday, will aim to help keep the momentum of that recovery going. As part of the council's creation, Biden also announced 30 different initiatives to help ease supply chain pressures and and prevent future shortages for products like drugs and semiconductors.

When Hims & Hers launches its new weight-loss program, the digital-health company won't be joining in on the Ozempic craze, its CEO, Andrew Dudum, said. While pricey drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have exploded in popularity this year for their potential to help people lose weight, Hims & Hers plans to offer cheaper generic medications for weight loss, at least initially. Ro's weight-loss program was fueling fast growth for the startup this year, but some patients struggled with insurance denials and delays in communication with Ro. Dudum said during the company's third-quarter earnings call that Hims & Hers expected weight management to be "an extraordinarily valuable category." Black Friday's spending spike reflects a consumer who is more willing to spend than in 2022, when gas and food prices were painfully high. Pandya noted that impulse purchases may have played a role in the Black Friday growth since $5.3 billion of the online sales came from mobile shopping. A Mastercard analysis of this year's Black Friday sales found that in-store sales rose just over 1% versus online sales, which grew by over 8% compared to last year. Black Friday kept the momentum going from the day before on Thanksgiving when online sales totaled $5.6 billion, according to a prior Adobe analysis. The report forecasts that online shoppers will spend roughly $10 billion over the course of Saturday and Sunday, and a record $12 billion on Cyber Monday.
