By Friday, he had his accident, and my son was gone Saturday morning,” Velma Infante, his mother, told CNN. CNN spoke to two women who lost loved ones who died while working outdoors in the extreme heat. According to what Eugene’s then-supervisor told Carla, her husband collapsed in a neighbor’s front yard while delivering mail. Velma Infante carries this vial which holds a print out of her son Gabriel's last heart beats. Velma Infante worries that other state governors might follow Abbott’s example and implement similar laws that could potentially roll back local worker protections.

LONDON—The Zara store in London’s Chelsea neighborhood received a new range of maxi dresses in various styles. After just one week, store manager Ana Oliveira analyzed the sales data and saw that the dresses with prints were selling much better in her shop than those in solid colors. So she moved the print designs to the tall rails by the entrance. They would be the first thing shoppers would see as they came into the store, she said.

LONDON — European markets retreated on Friday, tracking cautious global sentiment as traders assess the future for monetary policy and fresh concerns about China's real estate sector. The European blue chip index closed Thursday's session down 0.9% and is on course for a negative week, after the U.S. Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes showed further interest rate hikes were not off the table. European stocks on Friday look set to follow counterparts in Asia-Pacific, where markets fell across the board as investors assessed Japan's July inflation print and embattled Chinese real estate giant Evergrande's U.S. bankruptcy filing. The company sought protection under Chapter 15 of the U.S. bankruptcy code, which shields non-U.S. companies that are undergoing restructuring from creditors. Wednesday's Fed meeting minutes prompted the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield on Thursday to rise to its highest level since October 2022.

Wind turbines and solar panels are seen at a wind and solar energy storage and transmission power station from State Grid Corporation of China, in Zhangjiakou of Hebei province, China, March 18, 2016. GLOBAL REACH WITH BACKHAUL POTENTIALChina's recyclers also have strong international supply lines thanks to the country's vast export-oriented manufacturing sector and resulting dominance in global shipping container trade. ECO-FRIENDLY ECOSYSTEMSChina's plan to develop a large scale recycling sector for the renewables industry is in keeping with the country's practice of developing interdependent ecosystems around key industries. The country aims to develop similar strongholds in auto and electronics manufacturing, and may now extend that framework to the renewables energy sector, which Beijing has identified as a key industry for the remainder of this century. For recycling firms based elsewhere that had been planning to scale up their handling of older green energy equipment, the prospect of a government-backed competitor in China may be a cause for concern.

That divergence reflects investors' expectations that Beijing will support LGFVs in order to minimise financial contagion, despite rising delinquencies among developers. The chorus of economists calling for China to support LGFVs as part of measures to shore up the economy has grown. USDA’s August corn and soy yields were the season’s highest in three of the last 10 years, most recently in 2022 for both. Looking toward final yields, the August corn yield has a slight tendency to be too high. Final corn yield was lower than in August in six of the last 10 years and in 10 of the last 15 years. The last two times final corn yield was above the August figure were in 2021 and 2017. USDA’s July corn and soy yields were 177.5 and 52 bpa, respectively, and both would be new records.

Nearly three months after Nvidia shocked Wall Street with blowout earnings and forecast thanks to accelerating AI demand , analysts are still going crazy for the chipmaker. NVDA 3M mountain Nvidia shares over the last three months Curtis justified the run-up in shares this year, noting that more companies are allocating cloud capital expenditure budgets toward AI, and Nvidia shows no signs of a "clear competitor" in the field. Raymond James analyst Srini Pajjuri said that tight supply issues could limit the near-term upside for Nvidia but that the generative AI story remains intact. He also called the steep valuation justified given the Jensen Huang -led company's dominance in AI and machine learning. While Deutsche Bank's Ross Seymore anticipates another "stunning" report and more upside from AI, he retained his hold rating on Nvidia shares.

HSBC identified nine "unloved stocks" listed on the London Stock Exchange that it says could be poised to surge due to several factors. The investment bank said U.K. markets have started to outperform other global indexes for the first time this year — since the release of the U.K.'s June inflation data on July 18. While the bank's strategists retain their underweight view on the U.K. market overall, they highlighted that London-listed stocks are "unambiguously cheap" on a valuation basis. The bank said the above stocks are FTSE 350 constituents with bottom-quartile consensus ratings indicating a sell or underweight rating. "By definition these screens are not relevant to everyone and should be viewed as a basis for further investigation," the HSBC strategists added in a note to clients on Aug. 15.

It Is Impossible to Break Your Phone Addiction Now

In many ways, we've so thoroughly integrated the devices into our lives, it's become impossible to break free. It's not just people's personal lives that are affected, but their work lives, too. To enter the store, customers need to download a separate app, connect it to their Amazon account, load a credit card, and swipe into the location. Instead, it lets customers register to scan their own items while they shop and pay from their phone. When internet connections aren't reliable, phone batteries run low, or you don't have a smartphone, these changes actually make everything much harder.

The chart below is meant to provide a high level view of the revenue exposure each of the 35 companies in our portfolio has to the world's second-largest economy. First, a couple caveats: Our energy exploration and production stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) screen as having zero revenue exposure outside of the United States. Nvidia (NVDA) is another stock where the direct revenue exposure can be misleading. That makes the 60% revenue exposure to the Asia-Pacific region more concerning, even as mainland China realized organic sales growth during the quarter. As a result, total sales, services sales and wearables, home and accessories sales all set June quarter records in Greater China.

Norway seen lifting policy rate to 4.0% this week

"The risk of another double rate hike is clearly reduced," Handelsbanken said in an Aug. 11 note to clients. Norges Bank's monetary policy committee has said it will likely hike the policy rate to 4.25% in the course of this year to prevent a continued rapid rise in prices and wages that could see inflation become entrenched. The European Central Bank last month raised its key policy rate to 3.75%, but a narrow majority of economists polled by Reuters expect the ECB to temporarily pause its rate-hiking campaign at its September meeting. All 31 economists polled in the Aug. 10-15 period said Norges Bank would announce on Thursday that it will increase its policy rate by 25 bps to 4.00%. The poll's median prediction showed that the policy rate is expected to hit a peak of 4.25% later in the third quarter, although some predicted it could rise to 4.50% by the end of the year.

Even classics can go out of print, but the war on books is never out of style. I was as opposed to that war at the age of 17 as I am at age 70. But there’s something I failed to see in my youth that I recognize today: the one piece of common ground between the book banners and me. We both believe that books matter, that they have the power to change a young person’s life. Access to the books was restricted, yes, but no one was calling for their removal.
