[1/3] Asylum-seekers arrive at the Roosevelt Hotel where migrants are currently being housed in New York City, U.S., May 19, 2023. REUTERS/David 'Dee' Delgado/File PhotoWASHINGTON, July 19 (Reuters) - New York City will distribute flyers at the U.S.-Mexico border telling newly arrived migrants to "consider another city" and limit shelter stays for adult asylum seekers to 60 days as the city's Democratic mayor says it is straining to house them. New York City says that it has provided services to 90,000 migrants since last spring and that nearly 55,000 remain in its care. Thousands of those migrants arrived on buses sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who has tried to shift the burden of receiving them to Democratic strongholds. "Please consider another city as you make your decision about where to settle in the U.S.," it reads in English and Spanish.

Netflix has gotten rid of its cheapest commercial-free plan in the U.S. and the U.K., in a push to get more sign-ups for its recently launched ad-supported option. The move leaves Netflix's standard with ads plan, which is priced at $6.99 a month, as its cheapest option. During last quarter's earnings call, Netflix Chief Financial Officer Spencer Neumann said the "economics" of its ad-supported plan were higher than the basic plan. "It's actually even higher than our standard plan," he said during the call, adding that advertising was incremental to both its revenue and profit. Similarly, Disney CEO Bob Iger has said the company is leaning into its ad-supported streaming option to get to profitability.

July 18 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley's profit beat estimates as growth in its wealth management business offset lower trading revenue in the second quarter, and executives expressed optimism about the economic environment. Morgan Stanley (MS.N) shares rose more than 6%, shrugging off the 14% drop in profits. Excluding one-off items, Morgan Stanley earned $1.24 a share on revenue of $13.46 billion, comfortably beating estimates of $1.15 a share on $13.08 billion revenue, according to data from Refinitiv IBES. Still, "we expect investment banking to lead the recovery in the next quarter," she said. Katzenberg, in a telephone interview, described Biden as "energetic" and "effective," and suggested Republican attacks on his age will backfire. "President Biden's age is, in fact, his superpower," Katzenberg said. Some Democrats expect such attacks on Biden's age and family will increase in 2024. Former Disney executive Katzenberg's opinion is likely to be reflected in Biden's campaign in the months to come. Sen. Ron Johnson told Insider in May that he had "no intentions" of recouping old campaign loans. But before that, he'd already done so — receiving $400,000 from his campaign after raising money for it. When asked by Insider in May if he would seek to recoup any of those loans, Johnson indicated that he wouldn't. That included a total of $210,000 to repay loans he made during his 2010 campaign, and $190,000 to repay loans he made during his 2016 campaign. A portion of the loans that Johnson repaid himself on May 3rd, days before he spoke with Insider.

Ron DeSantis dismissed concerns about his presidential campaign. DeSantis said his focus on the early states is not designed to make a national splash akin to a TV ad. DeSantis argued his campaign isn't aimed at making a national splash. "We're focused on building an organization," DeSantis said. Some Republican presidential hopefuls are pushing hard just for the chance to seize the stage in their party's primary debate next month. But the impact of the event may be limited if their top rival, former President Donald Trump, is a no-show. Reagan skipped a GOP debate in Iowa in 1980, but caught flak for the decision and participated in a later debate in the cycle. Trump himself skipped a primary debate in 2016, opting instead to hold a campaign event nearby. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas experienced something of that kind during the 2016 debate that Trump skipped, according to a post-debate poll of GOP insiders who rated Cruz the loser that night.

Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, smiles as he plays bridge following the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, May 5, 2019. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway dumped a significant portion of its stake in Activision Blizzard as Microsoft's deal to buy the video game company edged closer to the finishing line. The Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate disclosed a 1.9% stake in Activision with 14,658,121 shares, a new 13G filing released Monday evening showed. That compared with a 6.3% stake at the end of March and a 6.7% stake at the end of 2022. Vance of Ohio, have also blocked nominees for different reasons. “These delays are undermining our national security,” Mr. Blinken told reporters during an unusual appearance at the State Department’s daily news media briefing. The overwhelming majority of the stalled State Department nominees are career diplomats, and more than a third have been awaiting votes for about a year or more, he added. The aide noted that the vacancies put the United States at a disadvantage in its global competition with China, which many Republicans call their top foreign policy priority. Every now and then, a fictional character can have a profound real-world impact. In 2023, a very different character is revealing different truths, and the effect is, if anything, even richer and more meaningful. The character is Richie Jerimovich, brilliantly portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and the show in which he appears is FX’s “The Bear,” the second season of which was released last month. Episode by episode, Richie opens a window into the souls of so very many of our friends and neighbors. He forces us to answer an uncomfortable question: How do we respond to people in pain?

CNN —Oscar winner George Clooney has joined the chorus of artists calling for change as actors hit the picket lines in their first strike against film and television studios since 1980. “This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney told CNN in a statement on Friday. The SAG-AFTRA strike was officially announced on Thursday. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, stressed to reporters on Friday that the actors’ strike is not a ploy for big name stars to make more money. The writers’ strike had already halted production on most films and television shows.

What cooling inflation means for your Series I bonds

Jetcityimage | Istock | Getty ImagesAs inflation falls, investors are weighing whether to buy or sell Series I bonds amid other competitive options for cash. "Cooling inflation means that interest rates are likely near the end of their increases," said certified financial planner Ted Haley, president of Advanced Wealth Management in Portland, Oregon. But in the meantime, many investors are waiting for the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision later this month, which may affect cash yields. While the yearly rate fell to 4.3% in May 2023, the fixed rate portion climbed to 0.9%, making the asset more attractive for long-term investors. Of course, the next fixed rate for I bonds could be higher or lower.

Hollywood writers are entering their third month on strike. Film and TV writers say they're among those who have fared the worst as their industry has been remade, even as others reap the rewards. These Hollywood storytellers share something in common with workers in every industry: Everyone is afraid that the robots are coming for their jobs, Terminator-style. Now, they're some of the dominant forces controlling new content development in the entertainment industry. Recently, I reported on how the Hollywood writers' strike is dispiriting industry hopefuls at the outset of their careers — you can read it here.

RFK Jr. might be running for President as a Democrat, but he has some fans among GOP lawmakers. Sen. Ron Johnson told Insider he hopes Kennedy "gains traction and wins the nomination." House Republicans have invited Kennedy to testify next week, and some Democrats say it's a political ploy. "He's displayed extraordinary political courage," said Johnson, recounting Kennedy's own narrative about how he took up anti-vaccine advocacy. The awards show, as with much in the TV and movie industry, is also very much uncertain right now. But what you can count on is more reality shows, and maybe game shows, and probably more opportunity to binge shows that have already been on your favorite streaming service. Data from film permits in California indicates that production of most shows and movies already has been halted by the writers strike. But most other actors will stop working as soon as the union’s government board votes to go on strike later Thursday. Of course, the writers strike brought an immediate halt to new episodes of US late night shows, so the opportunity to do that sort of publicity was already limited.

DeSantis is scheduled to visit Iowa on Friday, his third trip to the state since declaring his presidential bid. His wife, Casey DeSantis, last week traveled to Iowa to launch a national "Mamas for DeSantis" campaign focused on parental rights, hoping to win over the swing vote of suburban Republican women. DeSantis' supporters are also emphasizing what they see as the similarities between DeSantis and Kim Reynolds, Iowa's popular Republican governor, said one person close to the campaign. "The campaign has the most sophisticated and experienced team ever in Iowa, and is poised to crush DeSantis," Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said. The moment of triumph for HBO is coming at a time of transition for the network, which since last year has been run by a debt-ridden parent company, Warner Bros. The network is now part of a streaming service that removed its call letters (bye HBO Max, hello Max). HBO had the three most nominated shows: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). It was in 1992, when NBC landed nominations for “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A.
