The Wagner Group recruited thousands of Russian prisoners to fight in Ukraine in exchange for freedom. While those who died return home to be buried, residents can't agree on how they should be treated. The Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary organization founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, caused controversy by recruiting convicted criminals to fight in Ukraine in exchange for their freedom. The UK Ministry of Defence said in an intelligence briefing earlier this month that about half of all the Russian prisoners sent to fight Ukraine have been killed or wounded. Some residents are also concerned about pardoned prisoners who return home alive but may still be violent.
Archaeologists have found bent nails, lime, and brick near a Roman burial site. These may have been charms to stop the restless dead from interfering with the living, they said. There are signs in burial site that the deceased person was respected at the time of their death. iStock / Getty Images PlusThe nails suggest ancient Romans feared the restless dead and would use various occult practices to protect themselves, archaeologists said in the study. But they were dead nails, and the way they were distributed around the perimeter of the tomb suggests that the placement was purposeful," he said.
An AI-generated image showing the Pope in a luxurious puffer coat went viral over the weekend. "I just thought it was funny to see the Pope in a funny jacket," he told the outlet. And while he hadn't considered the impact of AI images before, added: "It's definitely going to get serious if they don't start implementing laws to regulate it." He added that he had "no ill will" and "just thought it was funny to see the Pope in a funny jacket." "I figured I was going to get backlash," he told BuzzFeed.

Siobhan Roy would smile at her brothers while shivving them in the back. Roman Roy would wither his siblings with mockery. And Connor Roy would throw all their trophies in the closet and scream “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!”Connor Roy is the Jan Bradiest of the Roy siblings in “Succession,” which returns to HBO for its fourth and final season on Sunday. Like the middle child from “The Brady Bunch” whose lament about lucky big sis Marcia became a rallying cry for overshadowed siblings of a certain age, Connor is the child who can’t crack into the cool crowd even when that crowd is his own family. Alan Ruck, who plays Connor with gross entitlement and glib self-delusion, can’t help but feel the sting.

CAIRO, March 25 (Reuters) - At least 2,000 mummified ram heads dating from the Ptolemaic period and a palatial Old Kingdom structure have been uncovered at the temple of Ramses II in the ancient city of Abydos in southern Egypt, antiquities officials said on Saturday. It added that the discoveries would expand knowledge of the site over a period of more than two millennia up to the Ptolemaic period. The Ptolemaic period spanned about three centuries until the Roman conquest in 30 B.C. It was a necropolis for early ancient Egyptian royalty and a pilgrimage centre for the worship of the god Osiris. The structure could help "reestablish the sense of the ancient landscape of Abydos before the construction of the Ramses II temple," the head of the mission, Sameh Iskander, was quoted as saying.

REUTERS/Yara NardiVATICAN CITY, March 25 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Saturday updated rules on dealing with sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, expanding their scope to include lay Catholic leaders and spelling out that both minors and adults can be victims. BishopAccountability.org, a not-for-profit organisation looking to document the abuses within the Roman Catholic Church, said the revision was "a big disappointment" and fell short of the "extensive revamping" the policy against the abuses would have required. The updated provisions have been unveiled a month after the Roman Catholic religious order of Jesuits said that accusations of sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse against one of its most prominent members were highly credible. Rupnik has not spoken publicly of the accusations, which have rattled the worldwide order, of which the pope is a member.
Stepan, 28, who has increasingly driven Chinese cars when using carsharing services, is among those that need convincing. If you want my honest opinion, the difference (with Chinese cars) is massive," he told Reuters at Moscow's Favorit Motors dealership. When buying his new Chinese car, Alexander, 74, looked for one which encompassed Swedish technology. While Chinese cars are increasingly filling the gap, the lack of reputation remains an issue, said auto industry expert Sergey Aslanyan. Chinese brands' market share reached 37.15% in January-February, up from 9.48% a year earlier, Autostat and PPK data showed.

Architecture critic Kate Wagner says Trump's plan to build "freedom cities" is nothing new. There's a whole eco-system of classical architecture proponents on Twitter with Roman statues as their avatars who decry modernism. The order made classical architecture — think columns, marble, symmetry — the preferred style for federal buildings. Wagner says Trump's embrace of classical architecture echoes the right-wing war on modernism that began in the 1980s. "For some reason, there also emerged alongside of those advocates a group of people who started to make statements that people neurologically prefer classical architecture."
WASHINGTON, March 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed a deaf student in Michigan to sue his public school district for allegedly failing to provide him adequate classroom instruction, a ruling that bolsters the ability of students with disabilities to remedy shortcomings in their education. The 9-0 ruling authored by conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch revived student Miguel Luna Perez's lawsuit seeking monetary damages from the school system in Sturgis, Michigan, as the justices overturned a lower court's decision to dismiss the case. Perez has said the school district assigned him an unqualified classroom aide who did not know sign language, and then misled his parents as to how much progress he was making. After settling an administrative complaint under IDEA with the district promising additional schooling at the Michigan School for the Deaf, Perez filed his lawsuit in federal court under the ADA, seeking compensatory damages. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2021 dismissed the case, agreeing with the school district that Perez could not bring his lawsuit before first exhausting the administrative procedures under IDEA.
Climate change may be driving the rapid spread of Candida auris, a deadly fungus, across the US. Three charts show how extreme weather and environmental changes help spread disease. Nicolas Armer/picture alliance via Getty ImagesA leading theory on this fungus's sudden emergence and wide spread is that it's fueled by climate change. Whatever survives, however, is adapted to extreme heat — including the fever our bodies produce to kill off pathogens. "From the moment a person walks through the door … Amazon uses computer vision to track people," Peter Roman-Friedman, lead attorney on the lawsuit, told Insider. The lawsuit pertains specifically to nine Amazon's Go stores in New York City, where city law says companies must disclose when customers' biometric data is being collected. PARIS—When France’s President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected last year he vowed to turn the page on his tendency to exercise power in a style he once described as “Jupiterian,” a reference to the king of the gods in ancient Roman mythology. BRUSSELS, March 17 (Reuters) - Belgium is expected to officially recognize Buddhism after the federal government approves a draft law on Friday, opening the door to federal funding, official delegates and school classes. The Belgian Buddhist Union had requested recognition in March 2006. The only other EU country where Buddhism is recognized is Austria. There are currently six worship services officially recognized in Belgium: the Roman Catholic, the Orthodox, the Israelite, the Anglican, the Protestant Evangelical and the Islamic, recognized in 1974. All Belgian provinces and the Brussels Region would then also have to each finance a local Buddhist centre.

The weather will be drier and hotter than usual this spring along the northeastern Mediterranean coast that includes Catalonia. The dry weather will heighten the risk of wildfires even as it brings average rainfall nationwide, Spain's meteorological agency AEMET said. "Heat waves in this geographical area of the planet are more frequent, are increasing more frequently than in other regions," he said. Spain's drought nationwide measured over 12 months is no worse than it was in 2017, 2012 and 2005. But the average water level in Catalonia's reservoirs stands at just 27%, slightly above the level in parts of the southern region of Andalucia.

VATICAN CITY, March 13 (Reuters) - Pope Francis will mark his 10 years as head of the Roman Catholic Church on Monday celebrating Mass with cardinals in the chapel of the Vatican's Santa Marta hotel where he has lived since his election. The Argentina-born Francis, 86, became the first Latin American pontiff on March 13, 2013, succeeding Benedict XVI who had become the first pope in six centuries to resign. Francis has said he would be ready to step down if severe health problems prohibited from running the 1.38-billion-member Church. With his 10 years as pontiff, Francis has now reigned longer than the 7.5 years average length of the previous 265 pontificates. The shortest is believed to be that of Urban VII, which lasted 13 days in 1590.
