UK's Landsec expects rents to counter lower building valuations

Nov 14 (Reuters) - British commercial property company Land Securities Group (LAND.L) expects between low and mid single-digit percentage growth in annual London rental values despite continued pressure on building valuations. Valuations have been hit by high interest rates, hurting investment business within the sector and offsetting relatively better performance on the operational front. Landsec, which in May said it would invest more in prime retail space buoyed by a positive outlook for that portfolio, expects earnings per share for the full year to be broadly stable compared with last year's 50.1 pence. Central London accounts for about two thirds of Landsec's property portfolio. Its half-year pretax loss deepened by 0.5% to 193 million pounds ($237.3 million), hurt by declining property valuations.

North America used to be crawling with giant mammals, from dire wolves to big cats. watch nowLONDON — With big productions always needing big money, one theater expert explains how investment in the sector works and how London's West End is used as a testing ground for its New York counterpart. Not-for-profit vs. commercialIn London, there are two main theater models: Not-for-profit venues like the National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, and The Old Vic, and commercial theater like in the famous West End. Stakes higher in New YorkThe bar for financial success is much lower in London than on Broadway in New York. Budgets for shows in the West End can reach millions while on Broadway in New York, the stakes are even higher. Often producers will run productions in London first and if they are received well, transfer them to New York.

The Gaza Strip has been under a total Israeli blockade since Hamas launched an attack on Israel on Oct. 7. An Israeli ground incursion since then has brought fighting to streets around the hospital in the centre of Gaza City in the north of the strip. "Luckily they are still 36, we didn’t lose any of them overnight," Dr Ahmed El Mokhatallali, a surgeon, told Reuters by telephone from Al Shifa. 'NO CLEAR MECHANISM'The military did not say what steps it would take to make an evacuation possible, amid intense air strikes and ongoing fighting in the vicinity of Al Shifa hospital. The UK Ministry of Defence's intelligence update on Tuesday assessed the performance of drones that use lasers to spot targets for Russia's 152mm Krasnopol-M2 artillery munitions. Russia will likely try to improve the system by boosting "Krasnopol's flight performance and reduce the round's laser detection time," the UK update said.

Tirzepatide joins a similar medication called semaglutide that was also initially developed for diabetes treatment under the name Ozempic and has since been approved to treat obesity under the name Wegovy. Studies on both have shown high effectiveness in treating diabetes and obesity. The injectable medication Zepbound, manufactured by Eli Lilly, was approved by the FDA on November 8 to treat chronic obesity. This reveals a stark gap between the course nations are charting and what science says is needed to avert the most catastrophic impacts of climate change. The hurricane’s intensification — a phenomenon linked to climate change — was among the fastest forecasters had ever seen. It found that if all long-term strategies were implemented on time, these countries’ emissions could be roughly 63% lower in 2050 compared to 2019. “COP28 is our time to change that.”At COP28, countries will complete the global stocktake exercise, where they assess progress on climate action. The process is intended to feed into the next round of more ambitious national climate action plans due to be submitted to the UN in 2025.

The SPAC has an end of year deadline to use funds raised for a takeover, and said it would not seek an extension. LIU said it would consider exploring alternative options to pursue its strategy of accessing the Lloyd's of London insurance market. BAE upgraded its forecast in August, guiding that earnings per share would grow by 10%-12% in 2023 after orders soared following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Since then, Israel has invaded Gaza in the wake of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, upsetting stability in the Middle East. The newborns are under the care of exhausted medics at Gaza's Al Shifa hospital, which is besieged by Israeli tanks battling Hamas fighters, and lacks electricity, water, food, medicines and equipment. "Yesterday I had 39 babies and today they have become 36," said Dr. Mohamed Tabasha, head of the paediatric department at Al Shifa, in a telephone interview on Monday. The premature babies, who weigh less than 1.5 kg (3.3 pounds) each and in some cases only 700 or 800 grammes, should be in incubators where the temperature and humidity can be regulated according to their individual needs. "They are in a very bad situation where you slowly kill them unless someone interferes to adjust or to improve their situation," he said, also by telephone from Al Shifa. Israel says Al Shifa hospital sits atop tunnels housing a headquarters for Hamas fighters, who are to blame for its plight for using patients as human shields, which Hamas denies.

The popular weight-loss drug Wegovy reduced the risk of serious heart problems by 20% in a large, international study that experts say could change the way doctors treat certain heart patients. Wegovy is a high-dose version of the diabetes treatment Ozempic, which already has been shown to reduce the risk of serious heart problems in people who have diabetes. Study volunteers who took Wegovy lost about 9% of their weight while the placebo group lost less than 1%. About 17% in the Wegovy group and about 8% in the comparison group left the study, mostly because of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other stomach-related problems. In 2006, Medicare was allowed to cover weight-loss surgery to treat the complications of severe obesity, if not obesity itself, he noted.
