Industrials have shown "surprising strength," even as recession fears mount, according to Yardeni Research. The S & P 500 's industrial stocks have on average fallen a little less than 6% so far this year. That puts them in the middle of the pack among the 11 S & P sectors, but still a notable outperformance relative to the S & P 500's loss of almost 17% in the same period. Industrials are expected to post the second best earnings growth of the 11 S & P 500 sectors in 2023, Yardeni said. Boeing will also help the sector, Yardeni said, as the company sees increased demand upon resolution of its MAX jet safety issues.
Citi Global Wealth CIO, David Bailin CitiCiti Global Wealth says investors should be cautious ahead of an oncoming US recession. Overall, Citi thinks that 2023 will be the worst year for the global economy in four decades. But Bailin emphasizes that investors shouldn't sell and go to cash because they'll cost themselves money in that eventual recovery.
The Biotech Takeout Menu Gets Pricier

Biotech investors are aware that there is a limited pool of companies that could move the needle financially this decade. Biotech stocks don’t behave like havens in a volatile market. Many have been trading below the value of their cash reserves over the past year. But a subset of the sector, those best positioned to help fill big pharma’s looming sales holes, are outperforming their peers. Large-cap biopharma companies are facing a $200 billion patent cliff, with sales of key drugs losing patent protection in the next few years.
Expect Vulcan Materials to outperform as its value improves and its business is more shielded than competitors to cooling residential construction, according to JPMorgan. A driver of the upgrade was the fact that Huerta no longer sees the stock trading at a premium to competitor Martin Marietta Materials . while residential construction volumes are expected to fall between 10% and 15%. On the other hand, California would be harder hit — and is already seeing demand fall — from the chill in residential construction. Huerta kept Vulcan rivals Martin Marietta Materials and Summit Materials as overweight and Eagle Materials at a neutral rating.

TSMC's Arizona factory has sparked concerns in Taiwan, where semiconductor manufacturing is the backbone of the economy, about a "goodbye to Taiwan" trend among chip firms. "TSMC's research and development centre is in Taiwan, the complete supply chain is here," she said. "Taiwan has a complete supply chain, a complete system, and the backing of the government. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW), , as it is formally called, has repeatedly said that the bulk of its manufacturing will remain in Taiwan. It is also encouraging more foreign tech firms in the chip supply chain to invest in Taiwan.

TOKYO, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O) has entered into a 10-year commitment to bring the gaming title "Call of Duty" to Nintendo (7974.T) platforms, the chief executive officer of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, said in a post on Twitter on Wednesday. The agreement will bring the popular first-person shooter series from Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O) to Nintendo game consoles for the first time. "I think this is an attempt by Microsoft to pressure Sony into signing a deal with Activision and to make it easier for Microsoft to finish and close the deal with Activision," said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy. Microsoft competes with Sony and Nintendo in the global video game industry, which saw strong growth in recent years with people spending more time at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. Shares in Nintendo closed up 0.3% after the Microsoft announcement, outperforming the Nikkei average's (.N225) 0.7% slide and Sony's 1.3% fall.

This is the daily notebook of Mike Santoli, CNBC's senior markets commentator, with ideas about trends, stocks and market statistics. This pattern will break at some point, so a run to the old lows or beyond can't be assumed. Big Tech has done nothing to distinguish itself in the October-November rally in terms of regaining leadership. History says the big overheated leadership group of one bull market usually is sidelined even after the next one starts. It happened to Meta and Alphabet, now finally Salesforce is valued in parity with Microsoft after 17 years of extreme priciness.
London-listed retailers Frasers Group and Next are two clothing retailers that will "dominate" the sector during a recession, according to a veteran Schroders fund manager. Andrew Brough, who runs the Schroder UK Mid Cap Fund, said the two conservatively run companies are well placed to expand and take market share during a downturn through acquisitions. Shares of Frasers Group have risen by 30.6% over the past year, outperforming the FTSE 350 general retailers index, which has fallen by 29.3% over the same period. Frasers Group is Brough's largest holding, making up 6.7% of his fund. Brough, who's run his fund for 23 years, said he was more optimistic than others about the U.K.'s economy over the near term.
Photo illustration by Bráulio Amado Talk Do Humans Owe Animals Equal Rights? But does it then follow that we think of animals’ lives as being equal in value to humans’? That would lead to redoubling our efforts to make sure animals don’t perish in the future. Just think: Women are often raped, and that has been so all throughout human history. Now, as an incrementalist I want to be cautious here because I don’t think that predatory animals are doing anything wrong.

SHANGHAI, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) delivered 100,291 China-made electric vehicles (EVs) in November, the highest monthly sales since its Shanghai factory opened in late 2020, a Xinhua report said on Monday. The number marks a 40% increase from October and 89.7% more than a year earlier after the U.S. automaker ramped up output at the Shanghai plant, cut prices for the best-selling models and offered incentives to Chinese buyers. However, BYD (002594.SZ) led all brands in China's November EV sales at 229,942 electric cars including plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles, three times more than a year earlier and more than double Tesla's tally, China Passenger Car Association data shows. BYD was the top-selling car brand in China in the first four weeks of November, data from China Merchants Bank International shows, outperforming the Volkswagen brand in a reversal that highlights the pressure on legacy brands in the world's largest auto market. The outlook for next year is a bit better for stocks, but the first half sounds like it could be downright ugly. The strategist expects lows to be retested due to what could be a significant decline in earnings as interest rates rise. Jeff Kleintop, Charles Schwab's chief global investment strategist, expects a shallow recession may already have begun. He predicts the first half will be worse for stocks than the back half of the year, with a choppiness similar to the past six months. Calvasina expects small caps to be an area of outperformance, and she still sees value in energy and financials.

JPMorgan, Citi and BlackRock are among those who believe a recession is likely in 2023. Nevertheless, many on Wall Street are increasing allocations to areas of the market that have a reputation for outperforming during uncertain economic times. The S&P 500 Health Care sector is down around 1.7% year-to-date, handily beating the broader index's performance. JPMorgan's analysts forecast a "mild recession" and expect the S&P 500 to test its 2022 lows in the first quarter of next year. Signs of ebbing inflation have fueled hopes that the Fed may tighten monetary policy less than expected, supporting a rebound in the S&P 500 that has buoyed the index from its October low.

REUTERS/Toya Sarno Jordan/File PhotoSHANGHAI, Nov 30 (Reuters) - BYD was the top-selling car brand in China in the first four weeks of November, brokerage data showed, outperforming the Volkswagen brand in a reversal that highlights the pressure on legacy brands in the world's largest auto market. This is the daily notebook of Mike Santoli, CNBC's senior markets commentator, with ideas about trends, stocks and market statistics. We're not yet in breakdown mode, in other words, as the S & P 500 remains above its 20-day average (near 3,900). Breadth is positive despite the red S & P 500. VIX is hanging near 22, up off the low and very much in an inverse range to that of the S & P 500 for the past several months.
