Manchester United cemented their top-four place, moving level on points with Newcastle as goals by Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford sealed a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford. Arsenal, who failed to score for the first time this season in all competitions, have 44 points from 17 games with champions Manchester City on 36 after playing 16. MANCHESTER, England, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Manchester United made it four wins from four without conceding in all competitions since the World Cup break as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over lowly Bournemouth in the Premier League on Tuesday to consolidate their hold on fourth spot. Bournemouth never really threatened to get an equaliser, with the game effectively over as a contest after a rare goal from England full-back Luke Shaw doubled the hosts' advantage early in the second half. The win gives United a five-point cushion over Tottenham Hotspur in fifth and draws them level on points with third-placed Newcastle United, who drew 0-0 at leaders Arsenal. The future has never been brighter for renewable energy, as some of the snags that kept wind and solar production from going full throttle this year seem poised to ease. What is more, by early 2025, the IEA said it expects renewable energy to be the largest source of electricity in the global power mix, surpassing coal. Driving the IEA’s rosier outlook: First is the global energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that led European nations to try to build more renewable energy capacity within their borders to improve their energy security and replace Russian fuel imports. But the climate-and-spending bill’s support for growth of the solar industry should reverse the recent spikes in PPA costs, he said. GridsLong waits for permits and permissions to build new grid infrastructure remain a challenge to getting more renewable energy.
The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates seven times during 2022 to fight inflation. He believes the new year will bring a whole host of different challenges for small businesses. "I believe that we're going to see small businesses dropping like flies, and competition thinning out among the pandemic entrepreneurs," Gray said. With nearly half of Americans employed by small businesses, financial hardship to the sector could significantly impact the overall workforce. "Just since June, the rates have gone up almost 3% so capital is getting a lot more expensive for small businesses generally," Wallace told Insider.

A 60/40 portfolio, which typically allocates 60% of assets into stocks and 40% into bonds, counts on moves in the two asset classes to offset one another, with stocks strengthening amid economic optimism and bonds rising during uncertain times. So-called 60/40 portfolios, which mix stocks and bonds, are on place for their first down year since 2018. Though market participants tend to avoid bonds during inflationary times, they are a popular destination for haven-seeking investors when the economy wobbles. Consecutive annual declines in the 60/40 portfolio have been rare. Higher-than-expected borrowing costs or rebounding inflation could deal another blow to investors in both stocks and bonds.

Jordan Binnington made 33 saves for the Blues, who have won the first three outings of a five-game road trip. It was the second consecutive game, and fifth on home ice this season, that the Canucks lost 5-1. Nic Dowd scored goals 11 seconds apart in the second period and had an assist on Orlov's game-winner. He remains at 800 career goals, one behind Red Wings legend Gordie Howe for second place on the all-time list. Jeff Skinner and Lawrence Pilut also scored goals for the Sabres, who won their fourth straight game and completed a sweep of a three-game Western road trip.
A large dent has also come from industrial sectors forced to curb output as high gas prices make production uneconomic with some firms shifting production to regions with cheaper energy. FIGHT FOR SUPPLIESThe obvious way to boost supplies is through liquefied natural gas (LNG). That may not happen next year, meaning Europe would face fierce competition for LNG that would drive up the cost. Record high prices in Europe, however painful, helped the region to secure record volumes of LNG imports this year. Benchmark European gas prices hit a peak in August of more than 300 euros/MWh.

Belgian police said late last week that they had carried out raids and arrested four people in connection with an ongoing corruption probe into alleged payments and gifts from Qatar to members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and their staff. Kaili did not appear at a scheduled hearing on Wednesday, and was remanded in custody until she appears before a court on December 22, Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office said Wednesday. Federal prosecutors confirmed a “large-scale investigation” was conducted into the alleged criminal activity, corruption, and money laundering activities within the European Parliament on Wednesday. Kaili, who has spoken in defense of Qatar in the European Parliament, traveled to Qatar shortly before the start of the soccer World Cup. While this scandal has rocked Brussels, the allegations have come as no great surprise to those who know the European institutions, especially the Parliament.

SummarySummary Companies Futures up: Dow 0.02%, S&P 0.13%, Nasdaq 0.24%Dec 8 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures edged up on Thursday ahead of weekly jobless claims data, while fears of an impending recession brought on by an aggressive Federal Reserve kept investors on edge. The U.S. central bank has raised its policy rate by 375 basis points this year to a 3.75%-4.00% range from near zero, the fastest rate hikes since the 1980s. This aggressive approach by the central bank has stoked worries of a recession, with top executives of major U.S. banks and institutions including JPMorgan, BlackRock and Citi forecasting a likely economic downturn in 2023. "The yield curve is hideously inverted, recession is coming, and stock markets usually bottom only after a recession has started," said Luke Templeman, thematic research analyst at Deutsche Bank. ET, Dow e-minis were up 6 points, or 0.02%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 5.25 points, or 0.13%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 28 points, or 0.24%.
A Massachusetts man fatally shot his fiancée's father and wounded her mother and sister, then turned the gun on himself, after expressing he was “unhappy” that they were living with him, prosecutors said. His fiancée’s sister, 25, and their mother, 59, were also hospitalized at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and are both expected to survive. Shortly after, Labasquin got into a physical struggle with Baptiste, “at which point Mr. Labasquin was shot,” the district attorney’s office said. As the fiancée was calling 911, Baptiste allegedly shot her mother and sister then shot himself, prosecutors said. He had a valid license to carry the firearm, according to the district attorney’s Office.

Even Goldman Sachs will have to make cuts in a downturn, according to Solomon. Speaking at the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council Summit, the Goldman Sachs boss shared a bearish economic outlook that makes him significantly more pessimistic than his own analysts. Goldman Sachs' head of client portfolio management said Tuesday that the Fed will probably be able to achieve a soft landing. Solomon also said that after hiring aggressively over the past two years, Goldman Sachs will likely have to make some cuts as the economy suffers a slowdown.
