CNN —Apple is on the verge of kicking off perhaps its most important event in years as it faces a gauntlet of challenges. Apple is expected to team up with ChatGPT creator OpenAI Jaap Arriens/NurPhoto/Getty Images/FileA strategic partnershipIn the spring, Apple was reportedly discussing partnership opportunities with both OpenAI and Google to power its AI tools. But now the company is believed to have inked a deal with the ChatGPT creator, a partnership Apple could elaborate on during the opening keynote on Monday. Apple aligning itself with a company and a technology that have yet to win public trust could pose some risks for Apple down the line. Generative AI could potentially propel the headset into another level of personalization and immersion and usher in new use cases for businesses, particularly in the education and medical spaces.

Taipei, Taiwan CNN —When Nvidia surpassed Apple this week to become America’s second most valuable company, its CEO Jensen Huang was being feted like a rockstar in his birthplace Taiwan. Taiwan media has dubbed the phenomenon “Jensanity.”He’s not the only celebrity CEO in town. The United States has imposed a number of restrictions on the export of AI chips to China. Late last year, Chinese tech giants like Tencent were rushing to stockpile AI chips before those curbs took hold. “Taiwan in particular is very important to the semiconductor ecosystem.”People attend Computex 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan, on June 4, 2024.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella speaks at an event on Microsoft's campus in Redmond, Washington, on May 20, 2024. Microsoft said an artificial intelligence feature on new PCs that captures screenshots and enables searching of user activity will be off by default after security researchers determined that attackers could access the underlying data. The Recall feature was one of the main capabilities Microsoft showed during a press briefing last month for forthcoming Copilot+ PCs with AI computing power onboard. Microsoft has already added the Copilot conversational chatbot into Windows in a way that resembles OpenAI's popular ChatGPT. Microsoft is adding security protections to Recall in addition to requiring people to manually turn it on once Copilot+ PCs become available on June 18.

Hong Kong CNN —As profit margins get squeezed, temperatures are rising in the world’s biggest car market. A tense exchange between two major Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in recent days highlights the pressures they face as a price war in the industry intensifies. While top executives from the EV industry often post on social media about a range of topics, including technology and advertising, they rarely name rival companies, especially when criticizing them. In recent months, a price war has escalated in China’s hyper-competitive EV industry, with manufacturers battling for consumer attention with deep discounts or newer, cheaper models. The country has more than 200 EV manufacturers who are grappling with huge oversupply and slowing consumer demand.

Jeff Yang CNNNaturally, Apple has locked down the details of the revelations it plans on releasing on Monday tighter than Fort Knox. Apple CEO Tim Cook introduces Apple Vision Pro, a mixed reality headset, at Apple Park in Cupertino, CA, on June 5, 2023. What’s the songs-in-your-pocket equivalent for Vision Pro? But so far, if Apple is looking to reclaim its real-world relevance, Vision Pro isn’t it — yet. Let’s hope that at this WWDC, the company defiantly ignores last year’s laughter and continues to look, and think, different.

London CNN —IKEA has put a new spin on remote working, seeking 10 real-life staff to work in its Roblox virtual store that opens on June 24 and becoming the first brand to offer paid work on the gaming platform. “This is not the typical IKEA job,” the Swedish flatpack giant said in the listing for jobs in its Roblox outlet, called “The Co-Worker Game.”IKEA is launching a new game. IKEA is expanding into the virtual world. Al Drago | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThere is an $85 million shortfall between what partner banks of fintech middleman Synapse are holding and what depositors are owed, according to the court-appointed trustee in the Synapse bankruptcy. Customers of fintech firms that used Synapse to link up with banks had $265 million in balances. But the banks themselves only had $180 million associated with those accounts, trustee Jelena McWilliams said in a report filed late Thursday. The missing funds explain what is at the heart of the worst meltdown in the U.S. fintech sector since its emergence in the years after the 2008 financial crisis. She said Synapse apparently commingled funds among several institutions, using multiple banks to serve the same companies.

"They know how to put on a tight gun case." Biden's trial is not necessarily a lost cause. This arrangement has perversely allowed Weiss to politicize the proceedings unchecked, Hunter Biden's lawyers argued. There's no evidence that Biden even loaded or used the gun before his brother's widow, Hallie Biden, threw it out. For over a decade, companies around the world have attempted to create smart contact lenses, but they never got down to incorporating electronic components to make a safe battery. LEE SEOK WOO: So, when I decided to work on contact lenses and the power supply to the smart contact lens, I was concerned about the safety because the lithium-ion battery has the issue of the explosion or catching fire. Unlike traditional contact lenses, smart contacts have the potential to do more than just correcting the users' eyesight. So, it might be hard to implant all the devices into one smart contact lens. And of course, the technology needs to be patented first before these smart contact lenses become a reality.

Scientist Lee Seok Woo said a scene from a "Mission Impossible" movie inspired his latest invention: batteries for smart contact lenses. In the fourth film of the series, an agent wears contact lenses capable of facial recognition and eye tracking. "I was thinking, 'How can I work in this field of smart contact lenses?'" He realized smart contact lenses would need safe and compact batteries, which would be crucial for advancing development of these devices. Contact lenses themselves are extremely thin, at 0.5 mm, thus the size and flexibility of these batteries are key to preventing user discomfort.

CNN —A Palestinian-American engineer has sued the social media giant Meta, accusing his former employer of discriminating against pro-Palestinian speech on its platforms and of wrongfully firing him after he investigated the issue as part of his official duties. “The employee was dismissed for violating Meta’s data access policies, which we make clear to employees will result in immediate termination,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement to CNN. When Hamad flagged the matter late last year to colleagues within the same team, he allegedly began to receive communications from Meta employees outside of the team pressuring him to drop the investigation. The firing took place against the backdrop of other examples of company bias against pro-Palestinian speech, Hamad alleges.
