China is punishing citizens who can't repay their debts by cutting off access to social services. So-called deadbeat debtors are blacklisted, facing travel restrictions and government jobs. That means that delinquent debtors are restricted from accessing some services in the country, like high-speed trains and air travel. Unlike most other countries, China doesn't allow most people to write off their debts with bankruptcy, per the Journal. The worst offenders may face trouble getting loans and travel restrictions — similar to the experience of blacklisted debtors.

Read previewA veteran Boeing engineer told a panel of lawmakers that he received verbal and physical threats for voicing safety concerns to the company. In a Senate hearing on Wednesday, Sam Salehpour, a veteran Boeing employee turned whistleblower, said the company repeatedly ignored his reports of safety lapses during the production of at least 1,400 widebody airplanes. Salehpour said a Boeing quality manager told him not to document concerns or notify experts of the gaps he said exist on the fuselage of hundreds of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Salehpour — who said he still has his job thanks to whistleblower-protection laws — told lawmakers that has has also received threats against his physical safety. He told lawmakers that although he has "no proof" of where or who the nail came from, he believes it happened at work.

“When rockets fly in Israel, the whole world writes about it,” said Amil Nasirov, a 29-year-old singer. “And it’s like some devaluation of Ukrainian lives.”Ukraine has begged since the outset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 for more tools to close its sky to Russian missiles. Ukrainian officials noted the role that fighter jets played in defending Israel as a sign of their importance in air defense. “That would be a danger of escalation.”The United States remains the chief supplier of the munitions for Ukraine’s best air defense systems. In the intervening months, Ukraine’s air defenses have been critically depleted, while Russia has greater success in using air power to advance on the front line, attack Ukraine’s energy grid and inflict more casualties against civilians.

In your 40s, financial priorities can range from taking care of aging parents to funding the activities and futures of your kids. Here are four steps certified financial planners recommend taking with your money throughout your 40s. You generally have two options for life insurance: term or permanent. Term life insurance provides coverage for a set amount of time, often somewhere between 10 and 30 years, while permanent life insurance, also known as whole life, provides coverage for the rest of your life. Term life insurance is generally fitting for people looking for affordable, temporary coverage, while permanent life insurance is more flexible and can earn interest.

That process prompted Judge Juan Merchan to sternly admonish Trump for his conduct toward the first juror questioned about her social media. That gave Trump’s team the chance to mine their public social media postings to be ready for their challenges to the judge. As for the three jurors Merchan did not strike: Trump’s side used its preemptory challenges to remove all of them anyway. The juror was later struck for cause by the judge on a challenge from Trump’s team over his social media posts. But the judge is hoping to wrap up jury selection this week.

Australia's superannuation system mandates employer-funded retirement contributions. Meanwhile, the US retirement system has become anxiety-inducing for many, as older adults struggle to make ends meet. AdvertisementAustralian retirement system puts saving responsibility on employers, not employeesAmerica's current retirement infrastructure includes two major categories: defined contribution plans and Social Security. This differs from the American system, where retirees' money is often held between a 401(k), other accounts, and outside investments. Still, Reilly cautioned that applying Australia's retirement system to the US could negatively affect employee wages.

This week, a reader's car was damaged when their friend drove it with the parking brake engaged. When he finally finished, my best friend did me a huge favor by driving from Portland to Seattle to bring me my car. While these feelings are perfectly natural, allowing them to ruin your relationship with your best friend would be unfair to you both. Knowing that your best friend "can barely afford rent" and still expecting her to repay you for the car parts is the wrong choice. But even if it isn't, I hope you don't lose your best friend over a single space-out.

“Their tactics have changed – unfortunately, not for the better for us,” Svitlana Grynchuk, Ukraine’s deputy energy minister, told CNN. In the first two years of war, Russian attacks were more scattered, firing salvos of missiles to target large swathes of Ukraine’s energy system. More than 200,000 people were left without power after Russian attacks Thursday. But Ukraine is now confronting a wholly different task: repairing not just substations, but entire power plants. Rather than rebuilding large – and, without air defenses, vulnerable – power plants, it may shift how it produces its energy.

However, “how to bring it up is tricky because any topic related to sexual health is so taboo and so value-based,” Brito said. But regardless, “it’s important for you to be assertive about your own health,” Brito said, especially as rates of STIs have been rising over the last several years. Whether it’s due to shame or selfishness, not everyone is forthcoming about their sexual health status. Additionally, it’s easier to be proactive and prevent contracting STIs than it is to have to handle a health problem. “There are many … STIs that have really bad stigmas that actually don’t cause any long-term problems,” Earle-Cruickshanks said.

It was a response to Israel's attack on an Iranian consulate building in Damascus on April 1, which killed multiple high-level Iranian commanders. But Iran knows all too well about Israel's Iron Dome and its other air defense systems, which intercepted many of the incoming projectiles. Iran also warned everyone for weeks that the attack was coming — giving Israel's allies time to prepare — and avoided targeting civilian locations. It was a response aimed at demonstrating its capabilities and saving face while — its government hopes — avoiding further escalation. Washington CNN —Americans haven’t been stashing money into their savings accounts like they used to, according to government statistics. Put together, this may have resulted in “a structurally lower saving rate,” according to the report. What does the lower saving rate of nowadays say about the US consumer? Households are continuing to spend at these elevated rates and one reason is because of the lower saving rate. You’re just not seeing a reversal back to pre-Covid levels, which isn’t shocking when you look back historically to what has happened to the saving rate.
