A dockworkers strike begins. Back in the States, a dockworkers strike could upend an economy finally on the mend. Tuesday morning marked the start of a dockworkers strike that will shutter dozens of US ports that handle about half of all US ocean imports. The Iranian attack was largely thwarted, and the dockworkers strike could be short-lived. That's thanks in part to strong demand in China.

MIT economist warns AI infrastructure investments may not meet investor profit expectations. Only 5% of jobs are likely to be significantly impacted by AI in the next decade, according to the economist. That's according to MIT Economist Daron Acemoglu, who told Bloomberg in an interview that the hype surrounding AI may not meet its lofty expectations. The most optimistic scenario, according to Acemoglue, is that AI hype cools and some applications of the technology take hold. In such a scenario, investors and tech executives would become disenchanted with AI, leading to a "AI spring followed by AI winter."

London CNN —CVS Health is planning to cut about 2,900 jobs in an effort to slash costs, the US health care company said Tuesday. The layoffs represent less than 1% of CVS Health’s (CVS) workforce. In 2021, CVS Health announced that it would close around 900 stores between 2022 and 2024. US drug store chains are struggling because of falling reimbursement rates for prescription drugs, according to analysts who cover the industry. Dollar General’s growth has also hurt drug store chains in rural areas.

If you like your European midweek football this is the week for you, with 54 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches being crammed into three nights. The Champions League kicked things off with some of the competition’s favourites beginning to bare their teeth. It was also, incredibly, their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group stage away games. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and a first Champions League goal for James McAtee saw City get their first win of this year’s competition. They lost a number of key players in the summer and can’t even play Champions League games at their own home, with the 15,000 capacity Stade Francis-Le Ble not up to Champions League standards (they’re hosting matches at Guingamp’s Stade du Roudourou instead).

Programs like Startup India, which provides founders benefits like tax exemption, easier compliance, and funding support, have made creating a company smoother. No, the tech that’s going to save humanity will be powered by the tech that very nearly destroyed it. The tech industry’s solution, for now, is nuclear energy, which is more stable than wind or solar and is virtually carbon-emission-free. Amazon is working on putting a data center campus right on the site of a Talen Energy nuclear power plant in Northeast Pennsylvania. And while AI doomer predictions often get brushed off as alarmist forecasts, you can’t as readily dismiss the folks who are concerned about nuclear energy. Bottom line: There’s no AI future without a serious uptick in our power supply, which makes the expansion of nuclear power practically unavoidable.

Club holdings Amazon , Costco , Home Depot , and Best Buy have been preparing for the port strike for months — attempting to blunt any fallout it might have on their abilities to get goods from overseas. They added that 60% to 70% of those imports arrive at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. To put things in perspective, for retail goods, the East Coast ports are less utilized than the West Coast ports, Basham said. Due to its size, however, Best Buy often gets priority from its shippers, which could help secure goods faster than smaller competitors. Amazon won partial dismissal of an FTC lawsuit alleging illegal monopoly practices. AdvertisementAmazon just won a partial dismissal of a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that accused it of operating an illegal monopoly. In September 2023, the FTC sued Amazon for stifling competition by punishing vendors who sell their items cheaper on rival platforms and for forcing sellers to use Amazon's own fulfillment service. On Monday, a federal judge in Seattle partially granted Amazon's earlier motion to dismiss the case, Reuters reported, citing court records. Last year, the agency sued Amazon in another case, saying it lured unwitting customers into Prime subscriptions and created a "labyrinthine" process to cancel it.
