Walmart is letting go of nearly 1,500 workers at one of its fulfillment centers in the Atlanta area, with the company repurposing the e-commerce facility to support third-party sellers. A Walmart blog post published on Monday said the company will turn the fulfillment center into "a dedicated facility supporting our growing Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) business." The company launched Walmart Fulfillment Services in 2020 to allow third-party-marketplace sellers to ship and store products using the retailer's warehouses. For comparison, Amazon said it has nearly 2 million third-party sellers on its marketplace. Yarbrough said Walmart may convert more fulfillment centers to focus on WFS as the company attracts more third-party sellers to its marketplace.

On the other hand, overall employment growth has been much stronger than normal. Why has employment growth remained so strong? And it’s likely that these represent structural changes to buying patterns that will keep demand high. Employment growth is likely to slow down from its historically high rates, but it will still remain solid in the coming months. The only option that leaves the Fed is to engineer a recession by continuing to raise interest rates.
But a surprising drop in the unemployment rate and another boost in worker wages sent a clear message to markets that more giant interest rate hikes are on the way. Everybody who seems to want a job is getting a job," said Ron Hetrick, senior economist at labor force data provider Lightcast. "But we've been getting into a situation where our low unemployment rate has absolutely been a significant driver of our inflation." A series of central bank rate increases has been aimed at reducing demand and thus loosening up a labor market where there are still 1.7 open jobs for every available worker. It all makes the inflation fight look ongoing, even with a slowdown in payroll growth.
Brian Kemp said calls to change the Atlanta Braves' name are "woke cancel culture." The White House said Monday that it's "important" to talk about the offensive team name. Native American activists have been fighting to change sports mascots and team names for decades. Many Native American leaders and groups have said they find the action offensive. According to the Ferris State University Jim Crow Museum, team mascots, phrases, and other traditions that reference Native Americans reinforce harmful stereotypes to non-Native people.

Marco Rubio, John Fetterman, and several other politicians have sent out fundraising emails that tout sleepless nights and no days off. But in an age of "quiet quitting" — rejecting hustle culture and subtly dialing it back at work — several politicians have sent out fundraising emails that talk about all-night work and "not taking days off," effectively glorifying working oneself to death. "We have less than 7 weeks to ensure I defeat Dr. freakin' Oz AND this race could literally make or break our Democratic Senate Majority. The latest fundraising email from Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida said his campaign manager, Mark Morgan, hasn't slept in days. "Failure is not an option," Herschel said in his fundraising email, in all caps.
The sudden sell-off in the pound and U.K. bond markets led economists to anticipate more aggressive interest rate hikes from the Bank of England . I was surprised when the new chancellor spoke over the weekend of the need for even more tax cuts," Summers said on Twitter. U.K. inflation unexpectedly fell to 9.9% in August, and analysts recalibrated their eye-watering expectations after the government stepped in to cap annual household energy bills. 'Emerging market currency crisis'Sterling has fallen by roughly 7-8% on a trade-weighted basis in less than two months, and strategists at Dutch bank ING noted Tuesday that traded volatility levels for the pound are "those you would expect during an emerging market currency crisis." The likening of the U.K. to an emerging market economy has become more prevalent among market commentators in recent days.

A major airline union said Friday that it has enough support among JetBlue Airways' roughly 3,000 fleet service staff to seek a unionization vote, in the latest move to organize workers. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said it will file an application for a union vote with the National Mediation Board. A vote could create the third major work group at the New York-based airline to unionize. "The IAM has sufficient interest among JetBlue Fleet Service workers to conduct a union representation election," the union said in a statement. Most major airline workers are already largely represented by unions, though some carriers like JetBlue are less so than some competitors.

The appeals court also said it would agree to reverse a portion of the lower court's order that required the government to hand over records with classification markings for the special master's review. A Justice Department spokesperson did not have an immediate comment. Cannon, a Trump appointee herself, appointed Dearie to serve as special master in the case at Trump's request, despite the Justice Department's objections about a special master. While it voiced disagreement, however, the Justice Department did not appeal that portion of Cannon's order. It is not clear if prosecutors may separately seek to appeal other parts of Cannon's ruling on the special master appointment.
Dearie asked Trump's lawyers to submit by Sept. 30 a list of specific items in that inventory "that plaintiff asserts were not seized from the premises." He also has claimed, without providing evidence, both that he had declassified any documents found at Mar-a-Lago and that the FBI planted documents. On Trump's request, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon appointed Dearie to vet the materials. The Justice Department has said more than 11,000 documents were seized, including about 100 documents marked as classified. A federal appeals court ruled on wednesday that the Justice Department can resume reviewing those classified records in its criminal investigation.
Trump's lawyers, however, have stopped short of stating in court that he declassified the documents, though they have not conceded that they are classified. Trump's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Dearie pressed Trump's lawyers to make clear whether they plan to assert that the records had been declassified as Trump claims. Trump's lawyers proposed Dearie to serve as special master. Dearie on Thursday asked trump's lawyers to provide any evidence backing this up.

Former BlackRock employees say underwhelming pay and unfulfilled promises that the team could raise its own special situations fund led to widespread frustration and departures. The departures come as BlackRock aims to compete more aggressively in private credit, a key part of its high-priority alternatives push. Still, in recent years management has made it clear that its private investment capabilities need to be an important engine of growth. "It's not to say that the private credit market is easy to manage talent.

NetChoice general counsel Carl Szabo said in a statement that the group agreed the case should be heard by the Supreme Court, and was confident it would prevail. read moreAlso in May, the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, temporarily blocked the Texas law while lower courts considered NetChoice's challenge. Conservative Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch said in a dissent that it was not clear how the First Amendment should apply to large social media companies.

Federal prosecutors in their filing to the appeals court highlighted that Trump's attorneys had resisted Dearie's request. As one of his defenses, Trump has claimed on social media posts without evidence that he declassified the records. Trump is a former president and the records do not belong to him.
For now, the Fed thinks it can manage this without a hard landing. Even so, Powell is correct to say that inflation is worse than even a reversal in growth. Around half of small businesses now say inflation is their biggest challenge, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the public agrees, a Pew survey showed in May. The Fed said in a statement that inflation remained elevated, echoing its previous statement in July, with “modest growth” in spending and production. In its updated set of economic projections, the Fed forecast 4.4% unemployment in 2024, compared with its previous forecast of 4.1%.
