CNN —New York City is suing a handful of social media networks, alleging their platforms’ designs exploit young users’ mental health and cost the city $100 million in related health programs and services each year. A growing number of families have sued social media companies, along with US states and municipalities, over the alleged impact on the mental health of their children. The city also released a social media action plan that highlights how it plans to hold social media companies accountable, provide education and support to young people and families, and study the long-term impacts of social media on youth. Last month, Mayor Adams called social media a “public health hazard” and an “environmental toxin” during his State of the City address. The lawsuit also builds on last year’s Surgeon General warning that declared social media a “profound risk of harm” for kids.

Cisco joins a long list of tech companies that have announced workforce cuts in recent months. The Satori Fund's Dan Niles is offering up his strategy for playing the Magnificent 7 stocks. The founder and senior portfolio manager told CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " on Wednesday that he's currently long Meta Platforms , Amazon , Nvidia and Microsoft and short Apple, Tesla and Alphabet . "We all know that earnings, short term, doesn't drive stocks," he said of his investing strategy. Nvidia and Meta Platforms have led the pack, jumping about 48% and 33%, respectively, while Apple and Tesla have slumped about 5% and 25%. That sudden volatility highlights something that we often write about in Before the Bell: the major mismatch between policymaker and investor expectations for interest rate cuts this year. Federal Reserve officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, have repeatedly said they envision at most three rate cuts in 2024. Wall Street, meanwhile, has ignored those warnings and has opted to practice unflinching optimism instead. It’s not the first time they’ve had to learn an important lesson: Don’t fight the Fed. Bad for the markets, good for the Fed: Markets clearly don’t often take kindly to higher-for-longer interest rates, which can negatively impact earnings and stock prices.
