US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin speaks to the press on August 18, 2021, at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. The Defense Department inspector general's office has launched a formal investigation into Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's failure to notify the White House and Congress of his emergency hospitalization. The inspector general's office will "assess whether the DoD's policies and procedures are sufficient" to ensure proper communication when senior leadership is unavailable for medical or other reasons. The inspector general's office is independent from the Pentagon. In a statement Jan. 5, Austin said that he "could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed."

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping before a meeting during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' week in Woodside, California, Nov. 15, 2023. A senior Chinese liaison to Taiwan warned recently that Saturday's election would be a choice between "peace and war." Depending on the outcome, they could also trigger an increase in Chinese military activity in and around the island. Taiwan has reported myriad attempts by the Chinese government to influence the election via disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks and economic coercion. These meetings build on President Joe Biden's November one-on-one with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco, which aimed to end the bitter freeze that has characterized recent U.S.-China relations.

CNN —The powerful House Ways and Means Committee is threatening to reconsider the tax-exempt status of Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University amid allegations the elite schools have failed to fight antisemitism on campus. Rep. Jason Smith, the Republican chair of the committee, sent a letter on Wednesday to the four schools expressing alarm at their responses to antisemitism. The controversy has fueled a backlash from donors and politicians and helped contribute to the ousters of former Harvard President Claudine Gay and former UPenn President Liz Magill. The Ways and Means chairman noted that the universities’ tax-exempt status provides “lucrative financial benefits” and “advantageous tax treatment” of their endowments. Harvard is also under pressure to respond to wide-ranging document requests from another House panel, the Committee on Education and the Workforce, on both antisemitism and plagiarism.

U.S. President Joe Biden addresses the hostage situation in Gaza during a meeting about fentanyl in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, Washington, U.S., November 21, 2023. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., spoke with President Joe Biden about border security Wednesday, according to Johnson spokesman Raj Shah. "Speaker Johnson spoke with President Biden today," Shah said in a statement. A senior Biden administration official said the White House has not closed the door to an in-person meeting between Biden and Johnson, but no such meeting has been scheduled. Congress must pass some spending bills by Jan. 19 and others by Feb. 2 to avoid a government shut down.

Senate Republicans repeatedly said this week that a short-term spending bill may be necessary to keep the government open, a harsh reality for House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is balancing a looming shutdown deadline with the demands of hardline Republicans. The last temporary spending bill Congress passed, in November, established a laddered schedule of funding deadlines, the first on Jan. 19 and the other on Feb. 2. Meanwhile, eyes are on Johnson to follow through on the hardline Republican demands he was elected to champion. If not, he could meet the same fate as his predecessor, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was ousted in part for conceding to Democrats to avoid a government shutdown. While following through on the hardline demands would earn Johnson points with some House Republicans, it makes negotiating with Democrats harder, adding time to budget talks that he does not have.

Some of these road trips have been bliss, with the kids taking long naps in the back seat, while others have been less enjoyable, with screaming fits and diaper blowouts. Except to announce an upcoming bathroom or meal stop, we now rarely engaged with each other on these car trips. Instead, we would pick an audiobook as a family and listen to it during our ride. And there it was, a parenting win amid the initial shock of a no-screen time road trip. Now, we look forward to car trips with no screensLeading up to our trips now, we start talking about which book we'll listen to while on the road.

The White House took aim at former President Donald Trump after the Republican presidential candidate front-runner said he hoped the economy would crash this year rather than during his theoretical second term. Economists have forecast economic slowing in 2024, but consensus has not gone so far as to cry recession. The White House used Trump's comment as an opportunity to tout Biden's economic wins and to draw contrasts with the previous administration. Trump has taken advantage of Biden's struggling economic narrative on the campaign trail, reminiscing on what he claims was a golden economy under his administration. Under Trump, the economy expanded for several years but the stock market ultimately came crashing down in 2020 at the advent of the pandemic while Trump was still in office.

So began the harrowing minutes aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, when a door-sized section near the rear of the plane blew off 10 minutes after it took off from Portland, Ore., on Friday night, leaving some passengers initially confused, and others utterly terrified. “The first thing I thought was, ‘I’m going to die,’” said Vi Nguyen, 22, a passenger from Portland. Nicholas Hoch, 33, was sitting in 12A, a window seat near the front of the Boeing 737 Max 9. There was something wrong on the plane, he told them, adding, “I love you guys.”The flight, carrying 171 passengers and six crew members, began in ordinary fashion. Headed for Ontario, Calif., it was initially delayed by about 20 minutes to allow for de-icing, said Mr. Hoch, an architect, who was flying to visit his girlfriend’s family.

No Labels founder Joe Lieberman is open to scrapping his bipartisan , third-party presidential ticket if the nonprofit political group cannot nail down the right candidates within the next few months. But No Labels has yet to officially nominate candidates, in part because the potential candidates it has contacted did not immediately sign on. Despite the ambiguity of the Unity Ticket, No Labels has been picking up steam with a base of wealthy donors, doubling its revenue last year over 2021. No Labels has faced heat from Democrats for its third-party ticket experiment, which could derail President Joe Biden's reelection campaign without assurance that the Unity Ticket could also beat Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He said polling shows that a No Labels ticket would draw voters equally from both parties.

A criminal investigation is underway at an Oregon hospital after multiple deaths, NBC5 News reportsThe deaths were reportedly caused by infections from tap water injections substituted for fentanyl. It is alleged that up to 10 patients died of infections contracted at the hospital. The sources claim the infections were caused by a nurse who purportedly substituted medication with tap water. The sources indicate that the unsterile tap water led to pseudomonas, a dangerous infection, especially for individuals in poor health, commonly found in a hospital's ICU. Tap water is especially ill-advised, as sterile alternatives should be readily available to healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety.

Dozens of startups have jumped into the weight-loss market this year as weight-loss drugs, including Wegovy and Ozempic, have exploded in popularity. The few companies with enough money and brand recognition to stand up to Ozempic's distribution challenges — WeightWatchers, Noom, and Ro — can expect to compete for market dominance next year. But WeightWatchers signaled it's going all in on weight-loss drugs by launching its own behavioral program for patients on Ozempic in December. WeightWatchersLike WeightWatchers, Noom has remained staunchly in the weight-loss market since its 2008 launch. Ro launched its own program prescribing weight-loss drugs in January.

U.S. officials on Monday expanded a multinational maritime force in the Red Sea to defend against escalating attacks from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, which have impeded international shipping routes. The new defense, named Operation Prosperity Guardian, builds on the power of the Combined Maritime Forces, a 39-member international coalition. A subdivision of the forces, called Task Force 153 is dedicated to the Red Sea. Oil giant BP announced Monday it would temporarily suspend its shipping in the Red Sea, joining companies like shipping firms Maersk, MSC and others. The Biden campaign slammed former President Donald Trump for echoing Nazi sentiments with his repeated statements on Saturday night that immigrants are "poisoning the blood" of the United States. The Republican frontrunner most recently repeated the anti-immigrant remarks at a New Hampshire rally and in a Truth Social post Saturday night. "President Trump gave a great speech," Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said about the former president's remarks. Trump's inflammatory comments come as Republican hard-liners in Congress refuse to pass a Ukraine-Israel aid package until Democrats agree to stricter border policies. After Republicans voted to block Ukraine aid, Biden quoted a Kremlin propagandist saying, "Well done, Republicans!

"I would stay here indefinitely, but I don't know that all our colleagues will be able to do that," Speaker Johnson said at a Wall Street Journal conference on Monday. A small but vocal group of hardline House Republicans nearly shut down the government over their opposition to $6 billion of Ukraine aid included in the federal budget. Hours before a government shutdown deadline of Oct. 1, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed to strip out the Ukraine aid to pass a bill to keep the government open. If Ukraine funding talks get delayed to 2024 and become a pawn in the coming budget negotiations, Speaker Johnson could be at risk of meeting the same fate McCarthy did. Johnson already faces an uphill budget battle, without the added burden of Ukraine aid talks.
