That’s why the biggest theater chains in the United States and Canada have a $2.2 billion plan to bring them back. Large chains are also facing competition from luxury theaters offering an enhanced viewing experience, like IPIC Theaters and Alamo Drafthouse. Better air conditioning, new signs and revamped carpeting are also included in the plan. In July, Regal announced it would spend $250 million to remodel its 400 locations following its parent company’s exit from bankruptcy. The $2.2 billion investment shows “no better reflection of confidence” about movie theaters’ future, Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, told CNN.

A long road It's been a long and winding road for Waymo since its inception in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project. The robotaxi service now has about 700 autonomous vehicles on the road across its markets. New York CNN —Does Donald Trump really want his running mate, JD Vance, to have the final debating word this fall? The only remaining agreed-to debate of this presidential election season is the October 1 face-off between the vice presidential nominees, Vance and Tim Walz. CBS is hosting the VP debate and allowing other networks to simulcast the matchup, just as CNN did in June and ABC did earlier this month. The Harris campaign signaled that it would be interested, but only after the VP debate. The first two presidential debates this year were indisputably valuable to the tens of millions of voters who tuned in.

CNN —The tens of thousands of bees removed from a Maine farmhouse this week had caused quite a buzz there for decades, according to the family who’s lived on the farm since the 18th century. An estimated 40,000 bees were taken from the walls of a farmhouse at Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook, Maine, according to CNN affiliate WMTW. The bees were removed from a Maine farmhouse this week. Instead of killing the bees, the Knight family wanted to save the colony living in the farmhouse, which needs renovation, so they requested MacDonald’s services, WMTW reported. The Knight family said they plan to maintain the outdoor hive and the bees will be later relocated elsewhere on the farm, according to WMTW.

Additionally, Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including Sens. The political fallout from Robinson’s past comments could be particularly tough for Trump because of the importance of North Carolina as one of seven key swing states on the presidential map. Victims' families and a survivor of a Maryland bridge collapse that killed six people filed claims Friday for wrongful death and punitive damages against the owner and the operator of the massive cargo ship that crashed into the bridge earlier this year. The 100,000-plus-ton ship Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26 as a work crew was fixing potholes. Six construction workers died when the bridge went crumbling down into the Patapsco River. The nearly two dozen crew members on the ship survived, along with two pilots who were helping the vessel navigate the harbor. Days after the bridge collapse, the ship’s Singapore-based owner and manager petitioned a Maryland court to limit their monetary liability to $43.67 million, the value of the ship and its cargo, based on a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law.

That’s how much money one expert said the person who caught Ohtani’s historic 50-50 club home run baseball on Thursday could sell it for. “Just an incredible piece of history,” Dillon Kohler of SCP Auctions told NBC Local. The fan who ended up with the ball has not yet been publicly identified or announced an intention to sell. Only five players in MLB history have recorded 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season, making the accomplishment unprecedented and the baseball lucrative. Kohler said auction is the recommended selling strategy for Ohtani’s home run ball, which he said should have been hologrammed by MLB for authentication purposes prior to his at-bat before it reached the hands of its new wealthy owner.

What lower rates mean for markets
  + stars: | 2024-09-20 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
The Fed on Wednesday lowered interest rates, marking the first rate cut since March 2020. A decline in interest rates should, theoretically, mean good news for the stock market. The Fed likely won’t take rates lower as aggressively as they were raised, unless the economy takes a downturn and necessitates loose economic conditions. While mortgage rates and bond yields have begun drifting lower, companies and consumers still might not feel the effects of lower rates right away. But investors with outsized positions in Big Tech stocks should eye beaten-down areas of the market that benefit from lower interest rates, says Diton.

But while I initially thought I'd always pine for my college days, I can say that post-grad life has its plusses, too. I quickly learned that in post-grad life, there doesn't have to be a shortage of new things for your curiosity to dig into. A side note: planning to meet up with friends might take more effort in post-grad life, but effort is all it is. The future is something to be excited about, tooThere's no shame in finding the transition into post-grad life hard. I do believe that post-grad life can be as fulfilling as your college days.

WASHINGTON — As president, Donald Trump slashed a lucrative tax break enjoyed by coastal donors and suburban swing-state voters. What shifted more than the economy is Trump's needs, said Caroline Bruckner, managing director of American University's Kogod Tax Policy Center. The reversal is one of a flurry of freebies that Trump and his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, are offering voters in the stretch run before Election Day. Trump’s proposal to repeal the SALT cap, which is set to expire next year if Congress takes no action, would reduce federal revenue by $1.2 trillion over a decade, according to CRFB’s estimate. But many voters in those counties would stand to benefit considerably from a repeal of the SALT cap.

They received some relief on Wednesday when the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 50 basis points, which will lower mortgage costs. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said the "real issue" behind high prices in the U.S. housing market is a lack of supply, which isn't "something the Fed can really fix." With rates dropping, Powell also said that "more people are likely to start moving," which could boost home sales. Powell also said that shelter costs in the CPI tend to lag behind real-time prices, so the recent slowdown in home and rent prices prices isn't fully reflected yet. The best thing the Fed can do for U.S. households is get "inflation broadly down" and reduce the cost of borrowing by "normalizing" interest rates, Powell said.
