Targeting Chinese chip equipment makers could benefit European firms such as ASML. The Biden administration is reported to be considering fresh sanctions against Chinese semiconductor equipment manufacturers, pushing up stocks of semiconductor suppliers in Europe and Japan. The suggested curbs would add an extra 100 Chinese chip equipment makers to the entity list, the outlet reported. AdvertisementAs part of the sweeping sanctions, the US could add 200 Chinese chip firms to its trade blacklist, Wired reported. American chip equipment makers and allies such as Japan and the Netherlands reportedly pushed back against earlier proposals.

Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesFrance's brewing political crisis is spilling into financial markets with the country's borrowing costs hitting the same level as debt-ridden Greece's for the first time on record Thursday. The spread — the difference in yield between two bonds — between French 10-year government bond yields and their Greek counterparts was reduced to zero earlier Thursday. The yield on the French 10-year stood at 3.0010% while the same Greek bond stood at 3.030%. French officials looked to defend the economy on Thursday, but acknowledged that bond investors viewing French debt as risky as Greece's was a worrying development. Economy Minister Antoine Armand said Thursday that the French economy could not be compared with Greece's, however.

Opinion | My Brother Is Doing the Trump Dance

I can assure you that Kevin is very real and, this year, very excited. Somehow this racist dictator was able to assemble a new coalition of Black, Hispanic, middle-class and working-class voters. Turns out even people in blue America don’t like it when their groceries cost more and they feel less safe. I must admit I had misgivings about Trump and his election denial after Jan. 6, but Nancy Pelosi’s hijacking of the House’s special investigating committee shifted my perspective. There was no world in which Trump could have come out of that committee without being scarred.

AP —Baseball star Shohei Ohtani wants his former interpreter to hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of baseball cards he says were fraudulently bought using his money. The legal filing alleges Mizuhara accessed Ohtani’s bank account beginning around November 2021, changing his security protocols so that he could impersonate him to authorize wire transfers. By 2024, Mizuhara had used that money to buy about $325,000 worth of baseball cards at online resellers eBay and Whatnot, according to the court documents. Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball star Shohei Ohtani, leaves federal court in Santa Ana, California, on June 4, 2024. Earlier this year, Ohtani and the Dodgers won the World Series, and the baseball star won his third Most Valuable Player award.

CNN —Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy intend to lean on two recent Supreme Court rulings that they argue will make it easier to tear up a multitude of federal regulations. However, multiple legal and regulatory experts told CNN that Musk and Ramaswamy are misinterpreting the decisions, which could actually make it harder to overturn existing rules. Slashing needed workersWhat’s more, the endeavor would require a lot of assistance from agency staffers – the very workers that Musk and Ramaswamy have promised to cut. For instance, in a town hall on X last month, Musk repeatedly criticized government regulations, citing their interference with his companies. “It’s quite arduous getting regulatory approval,” Musk said while discussing his Neuralink startup that develops implantable brain-computer interfaces.

AdvertisementAmazon is developing a new AI model called Olympus for video analysis, The Information reported. Amazon-backed Anthropic has already launched its own multimodal model for images and videos. Amazon may have doubled down on its investment in Anthropic, but it also appears to be hedging its AI bets by developing its own model that can process images and video in addition to text. The tech giant's new model, code-named Olympus, could help customers search video archives for specific scenes, The Information reported. The development and launch of Olympus could reduce Amazon's dependency on Anthropic for multimodal AI, especially if the new video model becomes as a cheaper alternative.

They calculated each person’s Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) score, with higher scores denoting more regular sleepers. The team then tracked incidents of cardiovascular death, heart attack, heart failure and stroke over eight years and found that irregular sleepers were 26% more likely to suffer one of these events than those with a regular sleep cycle. Irregular sleep means the variations in the time someone goes to sleep and wakes up. However, it was an observational study and, as such, can only establish a link rather than cause and effect: we can’t know for sure if irregular sleep patterns caused the increased risk. But even those irregular sleepers who got the recommended amount of sleep had a higher risk of suffering a major cardiovascular event.

London CNN —A Banksy mural in Bristol, southwestern England, is set to be sold at auction next year, along with the building it was created on. “Well Hung Lover” was painted on the side of a building on Bristol’s Frogmore Street in 2006, with the city’s residents later voting to keep the mural. The building, which once housed a sexual health clinic, will be put up for auction by Hollis Morgan, an estate agency and auction house in Bristol. While the future owner has to ensure the “Well Hung Lover” stays put, they have no obligation to maintain it. Last year, a Banksy mural in Dover, southern England, valued at around £1 million ($1.2 million), was lost for good after the building it was painted on was knocked down.

In mid-November, Iran dispatched a top official to Beirut to urge Hezbollah to accept a cease-fire with Israel. Around the same time, Iran’s U.N. ambassador met with Elon Musk, an overture to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inner circle. And on Friday, it will hold talks in Geneva with European countries on a range of issues, including its nuclear program. All this recent diplomacy marks a sharp change in tone from late October, when Iran was preparing to launch a large retaliatory attack on Israel, with a deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps warning, “We have never left an aggression unanswered in 40 years.”Iran’s swing from tough talk to a more conciliatory tone in just a few weeks’ time has its roots in developments at home and abroad. Five Iranian officials, one of them a Revolutionary Guards member, and two former officials said the decision to recalibrate was prompted by Mr. Trump winning the Nov. 5 election, with concerns about an unpredictable leader who, in his first term, pursued a policy of “maximum pressure” on Iran.
