In the summer of 2019, the American fast-food chain Panda Express introduced a limited-time-only special it called Sichuan hot chicken. Never mind that the dish would have been unrecognizable to anyone in Sichuan, a province in southwestern China. The menu promised numbing Sichuan pepper in the sauce. But all seemed to agree that the hot chicken was not, in fact, hot. Nor did it offer much of the heady tingle of Sichuan pepper (not a chile, despite its name), which at its most potent can make your entire mouth buzz like a hive.

Reynolds revealed on an episode of "Hot Ones" that he had once planned to promote an intentionally bad-sounding movie called "Alpha Cop" as a ruse. As Reynolds pointed out on "Hot Ones," marketing a fake movie would help with leaks of what was being cooked up for the next Deadpool movie. "Ryan's idea was, the $100-plus million that studios spend on marketing a big Marvel movie, fuck that, let's do 'Alpha Cop,'" Wernick said. There was even an 'Alpha Cop' poster made. But the job market is not as hot as it used to be, and younger applicants, with or without college degrees, are feeling the pinch. Hiring projections for this year’s college graduating class are below last year’s, and the downturn is particularly notable in fields like finance, insurance, marketing and real estate. I cover economics at The New York Times, and I would like to hear from recent college graduates and other young job seekers, as well as hiring managers, about what the job market has looked like to them this year. CNN —Two suits, two women, one message: “Hotties for Harris.” At least that was the phrase scrawled across banners at Kamala Harris’ campaign rally in Atlanta Tuesday night. Minutes later, Harris walked onto her podium to rapturous applause — also in a blue pantsuit. From being endorsed by Charli XCX and co-opting the album of the summer, “Brat,” to capitalizing on the 32.3 million-strong fandom of Megan Thee Stallion, her advisors have been honing in on the 18-27 demographic. Kamala Harris' icy blue suit seemed twinned in a way with Megan's cropped version. It’s hard to picture Clinton signing off on a decision to have Megan Thee Stallion “shake cheeks,” as one fan on Instagram wrote, in a cropped suit at a rally.

David Gurley Jr.’s bank account benefited from a hot pandemic labor market. Mr. Gurley, a video game programmer, switched jobs twice in quick succession, boosting his salary and nabbing a fully remote position. But when it comes to the outlook now, “it seems like things are more or less OK,” Mr. Gurley, 35, said. Mr. Gurley’s experience — a rip-roaring labor market, then a wobbly one and now some semblance of normality — is the kind of postpandemic roller-coaster ride that many Americans have encountered. Now economic officials are trying to figure out whether the labor market is settling into a new holding pattern or is poised to take a turn for the worse.

That’s according to the latest Labor Department data on job openings, which edged back slightly in June. The monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey also showed that hiring activity sank, layoffs were muted and the number of people quitting their jobs hit a three-year low, according to data released Tuesday. In June, employers posted an estimated 8.18 million jobs, a total that was higher than what economists expected but marking a slight step back from the upwardly revised tally of 8.23 million openings in May. It’s the second-lowest monthly total seen so far this year. Economists were expecting job openings to shrink to 8 million, according to FactSet consensus estimates.

Large portions of England and Wales braced for considerable heat on Tuesday, with government officials issuing an alert for vulnerable people and meteorologists warning it would be hottest day of the year so far. The heat in Britain may also stir up sweaty memories of a string of brutally hot days across the country in July 2022, when schools, doctors’ offices and museums shut their doors while the government urged people to work from home. In Britain, few people have air conditioning at home, and much of the country’s housing stock was built to retain heat. Transport delays in very hot or very cold weather are not uncommon. “Much of the U.K. is entering a warm or even hot interlude of weather, with some places in England and Wales likely to meet heat-wave criteria in the coming days,” Frank Saunders, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Britain’s national weather service, said in a news release on Tuesday.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —Coco Gauff looked to be cruising against Donna Vekić in her third-round singles match at the Paris Olympics. The most fraught moment of the match came midway through the second set when Gauff was reduced to tears during a heated exchange with chair umpire Jaume Campistol. The supervisor also came onto the court and the ensuing debate lasted five minutes, with Gauff wiping tears away from her eyes. The Olympic flame isn’t a flame. Every Olympic host city has a few basic tasks that force it to straddle the line between acknowledging the tradition of the Games while showing that it is keeping up with the times. And that’s how you get an Olympic flame that’s not a flame at all. A flame that is actually “a cloud of mist and beams of light,” according to Paris 2024 organizers. That flame (or is it “flame”?)
