Yellen said her conversations with Chinese officials during the trip discussed plans Beijing had for its economy, but she did not elaborate. (Photo by BAY ISMOYO / AFP) (Photo by BAY ISMOYO/AFP via Getty Images)China's Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao said that the speedy rise of the country's electric vehicle firms was not because of subsidies, but due to "constant innovations." The allegations about "overcapacity" by the U.S. and Europe are without merit, he said, China's Ministry of Commerce reported Monday. Wang also attributed China's EV edge to "well-established supply chain system and market competition." The roundtable discussion centered around the European Union's anti-subsidy probe into electric vehicle imports from China, among other topics, according to the statement. Wang noted that the Chinese EV industry has "made an important contribution to the global response to climate change as well as green and low-carbon transformation."

EV sales growth has been slowing for a while but in the last two quarters, EV sales didn’t increase much at all, according to estimates from Cox Automotive. “Looking at the data, the big [EV] slowdown is shaping up to be a Tesla slowdown,” said Valdez Streaty. Last year, Tesla sales were up 38% compared to 2022, but investors had expected more. While that’s much less than the roughly 80% of EV sales Tesla accounted for in 2019, according to Edmunds.com, it’s still a majority. But, if you leave out Tesla, sales of other electric vehicles, as a group, were up 33%.

Jeff Gritchen | Medianews Group | Getty ImagesA car loses value as soon as you drive it off the lot, but electric vehicles are taking this adage to a new level. That's becoming a major barrier to wider adoption, according to some industry and investment experts. While lower used EV prices could increase their desirability to some buyers, they can also reduce demand for new electric vehicles, according to Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars. Kuo further argued that the software and computing capabilities of used EVs may become outdated and incompatible with updates by the time they are sold or even beforehand. According to iSeeCars, dramatic drops in used electric vehicle values in the U.S. have largely been driven by aggressive price cuts by Tesla amid a broader price war in the EV market.

Tesla's cheapest current model, the Model 3 sedan, retails for about $39,000 in the United States. The stark reversal comes as Tesla faces fierce competition globally from Chinese electric-vehicle makers flooding the market with cars priced as low as $10,000. Plans for the affordable Tesla have been seen as key to delivering on Musk's stratospheric ambitions for sales growth. Expectations for a $25,000 vehicle have underpinned Wall Street analysts' more modest, but still ambitious, forecasts for Tesla sales. Those forecasts, according to a Tesla investor-relations document, call for vehicle sales rising to 4.2 million by 2028 from 1.8 million last year.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesBEIJING — Chinese electric car company Nio has been expanding its battery swap partnerships in a bid to gain an edge on the infrastructure side of the EV ecosystem. Nio also announced agreements earlier this year to work with two local battery companies on battery swap services. While having a large network of battery charging stations helps address those concerns, battery swapping is a faster method as it takes only a few minutes. CLSA's Luo said businesses also prefer to invest in normal charging stations than swap stations because they make a higher return.
