New York CNN —Next month’s presidential election could make America’s hostile media climate even worse for journalists. That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. The Committee to Protect Journalists has historically called attention to journalists being arrested and killed in repressive regimes. According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, assaults on journalists in the US have soared by more than 50% in 2024 compared to last year. The Committee to Protect Journalists said the “corrosive political environment” has intensified safety concerns for journalists – forcing newsrooms to conduct safety assessments, evaluate online threats, and hire extra security.

And then, with the US presidential elections now less than five weeks away, there is the prospect of a second Donald Trump presidency. AdvertisementMark Rutte earned the nickname "Trump whisperer" after placating the former president on US commitments to NATO. According to Prakash, Rutte is "coming into the role from a certain outlook, and that outlook is essentially saying: 'We need to stand with America.'" NATO's deputy secretary-general, Mircea Geoană, told Euronews in July that China, as a direct enabler of Russia's war in Ukraine, threatened the alliance's security. AdvertisementShifting NATO away from Russia and toward other threats is going to be "perhaps the greatest challenge facing Mark Rutte," Prakash said.

Some expat Indians are moving back home to launch companies of their own. But the chaos, where even established startups are trying and failing, makes India a fair playing field for new entrants, Hassan said. Programs like Startup India, which provides founders benefits like tax exemption, easier compliance, and funding support, have made creating a company smoother. But Iran’s 2020 election interference efforts stand apart from what have become well-recognized interference patterns, according to an indictment from the Justice Department, Treasury Department sanctions, researchers and media reporting, and comments from current and former U.S. officials. Lawyers for New York Mayor Eric Adams asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss the bribery charge included in his federal indictment, saying the government’s allegations are “extraordinarily vague” and failed to prove Adams broke the law. Adams was charged last week with five criminal counts, including bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national. He is the first sitting mayor of New York City to face criminal charges in the modern era. “The zealous prosecutors who secured the indictment would have alleged that kind of specific agreement if they had any evidence to support it,” Spiro added. Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, declined to comment on the defense’s motion to dismiss the bribery charge.

His supporters have dubbed Marwan Barghouti the “Palestinian Nelson Mandela” in the hope that after more than two decades behind bars, he can emulate the late South African leader and make the journey from prisoner to national unifier. But Iran’s strategy underestimated how Israel would respond to the Hamas terrorist attack of Oct. 7 and subsequent cross-border rocket fire from Hezbollah. “Israeli intelligence has restored their aura of deterrence," Hoffman said. However, Yahyah Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, is believed to be alive and hiding in tunnels that Israeli forces have not yet seized. The successful Israeli operations have also forced Iran and Hezbollah to face a vexing question: how and when to retaliate without suffering yet more setbacks? As long as Israeli attacks continue, Hezbollah’s decision-making will be in disarray, but the militia remains a significant force.

And the US has incessantly pushed for a Gaza ceasefire that neither Netanyahu nor Hamas seems to want. For instance, the US and its allies helped repel a massive Iranian missile and drone attack against Israel in April. It has also killed other senior members of the two groups in strikes in Syria, Lebanon, Iran and in Gaza. And pro-Trump Republicans are goading him to go further — at least partly to weaken Biden and his chosen successor, Harris. This is just one of many reasons why Netanyahu is incentivized to expand his war no matter how powerless it makes America look.

Volkswagen itself is selling 500,000 fewer cars annually in the region, the equivalent of around two car plants. “To remain competitively viable, we have to comprehensively restructure Volkswagen… because the situation is serious,” the company said last week. “Volkswagen has to increase efficiency and reduce costs.”For Stellantis, Monday’s profit warning is the latest piece of bad news.

Eradicating corruption in Malaysia continues to be a difficult hurdle Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim needs to overcome if he wants to attract more foreign direct investments into the country. "Although, we are still carrying on this mission, because I had strongly suggested that when, in terms of corruption, it is almost systemic. When it comes to systemic, which means the mission, the crusade against corruption, has got to be full force," he added.
