Supreme Court charts rightward path in new term

People line up in the rain outside of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington April 29, 2014. Circuit Court of Appeals, whose staunch conservatism rivals that of the Supreme Court. The justices this term could hear five or more appeals of 5th Circuit rulings. The cases test whether the Supreme Court will go as far as the 5th Circuit. "My instinct is that the Supreme Court will not go this far in most of these cases," Chemerinsky said.

WIND POWERED GROWTHSolar power was Taiwan's largest source of renewable energy generation in 2022, with 10.69 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity produced, compared to 3.53 TWh from wind. In comparison, fossil fuels generated 239 TWh of Taiwan's electricity last year, Ember data shows. REGIONAL REPERCUSSIONSDespite jitters from some developers, overall progress on Taiwan's wind projects continues, and new investments in major offshore ventures were announced just this month by Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. The continued construction of Taiwan's renewable energy capacity has repercussions for both its domestic power sector and for global fossil fuel export markets. The country's famed semiconductor industry, the world's largest, is aiding the national push for greater renewable energy generation, and has set itself a goal of being powered by 100% green energy supplies by 2040.

The sources said the deal could value Bach Hoa Xanh, Vietnam's third largest grocery chain, at around $1.5-$1.7 billion. Founded in 2015, Bach Hoa Xanh, backed by Vietnam's retail giant Mobile World Investment (MWG.HM), is running more than 1,700 stores in Vietnam's southern and south-central provinces. The Ho Chi Minh City-headquartered company had first planned the sale of a stake of up to 20% in Bach Hoa Xanh last year. CNN —The “Barbie” movie is a bona fide cultural moment. Some videos show people carefully roaming toy aisles to pick out dolls that speak to their careers, identities or just their sense of whimsy. In one popular TikTok, a daughter surprises her mom with a Dia De Muertos Barbie, and no one comes away dry-eyed. Greene thought the idea of an emotional support Barbie was a little silly at first, but she found herself in a Target one weekend and caved. When Flora saw the “Barbie” movie with her daughter, she says nearly the whole audience was decked out in pink, sparkles and sunglasses, bubbling over with excitement.

Brian Cox spoke with the BBC about his thoughts on Rupert Murdoch stepping back from chair of News Corp.Cox recounted how Murdoch's son-in-law once asked if the "Succession" writers could "be a bit nicer." Cox, who played a character inspired by Murdoch, criticized the tycoon's ability to "manipulate" politics. Gupta was the most senior India employee for X, formerly known as Twitter, and responsible for "key content-related policy issues" and "defending Twitter's position with new policy developments and support in-country sales organization," according to his LinkedIn profile. Gupta, who was designated as X's Head of Global Government Affairs for India and South Asia, declined to comment to Reuters. There are roughly 15 X employees in functions like compliance and engineering in India, said one of the sources, but Gupta was the only executive engaging with the government and political parties. India in September told a court X is a "habitual non-compliant platform" and for years has not followed many orders to remove content, undermining the government's role.

Thailand's opposition Move Forward Party names new leader
  + stars: | 2023-09-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BANGKOK, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Thailand's opposition Move Forward named a new leader on Saturday after Pita Limjaroenrat, who led the party to a stunning election victory in May, was thwarted in his efforts to become premier. The progressive party will lead the opposition after conservative lawmakers and an unelected senate blocked its attempts to form a government. Pita stepped down as party leader earlier this month amid a host of legal and legislative challenges that many see as part of a pattern by the pro-military and royalist establishment to diminish a new generation of leaders. Pita would continue on as advisor to the party and manage activities outside parliament, Chaitawat said. "This could easily wipe out members of the opposition, who give commentary calling for reforms," he added.

He said he would continue to foster a relationship with the United States, but added that East Timor would not be implicated in any rivalry between Beijing and Washington. East Timor welcomes strong ties with all countries, including its southern neighbour Australia, Ramos-Horta said last year. Upgrading their ties, China and East Timor agreed to cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative championed by Xi, that could open the way for investment in infrastructure. China sent its military-run hospital ship to the Pacific in July to visit countries including East Timor and the Solomon islands. In a joint declaration, released on state run China Central Television (CCTV) on Saturday, China said it would provide help for East Timor's economic and societal development.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim attends the 26th ASEAN-China Summit at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 6, 2023. Malaysia and several other Southeast Asian countries have rejected the map. Anwar said Malaysia remained concerned over escalating tensions as China sought to assert its sovereignty claims over Taiwan, adding that both parties needed to avoid "unnecessary provocations" that can affect the region. Anwar also addressed doubts raised over his commitment to democratic reforms, after his government dropped corruption cases against key allies, filed sedition charges against opposition leaders, and increased scrutiny of Malaysia's LGBTQ community. "I wouldn't defend that actually, they were as you say, excesses, but... there is a consensus in the country, they do not accept (LGBTQ rights)," Anwar said.

In December 2005, five groups of Wall Street investors flew in private jets to Portland, Maine, where they took waiting limousines to a warren of metal buildings that resembled a midsize lumberyard. They had come to Bushmaster Firearms in pursuit of a highly profitable product whose market was growing faster than any other in America’s stagnant gun industry. The product was the AR-15, and red-hot Bushmaster, the nation’s leading manufacturer of the rifle, had decided to auction itself to the highest bidder.

All three states lean heavily Republican in federal elections, yet Democrats currently control the governorship in two out of the three. As usual, we are rating these races on the following scale: Safe Republican, Likely Republican, Lean Republican, Toss-Up, Lean Democratic, Likely Democratic and Safe Democratic. The race moving in the Republican direction is Louisiana, which we’re shifting from Likely Republican to Safe Republican. But for now, we’ll keep it at Likely Republican. That may be in tune with Kentucky voters, who, despite the state’s Republican lean, rejected a 2022 ballot measure that would have enhanced the state’s ability to outlaw abortion.

Put into bat, Australia were all out for 276 in exactly 50 overs even though 300 looked within their reach before Shami polished off their tail. Nearly all of Australia's frontline batters got the starts in the match but only David Warner (52) managed a half-century. Australia still looked poised for a bigger total with Josh Inglis (45) and Marcus Stoinis (29) scoring freely. After Adam Zampa removed both the openers and Shreyas Iyer ran himself out in between, Australia looked back in the contest. Rahul made 58 not out, staying put till the end to secure India's victory by hitting Abbott for a four and a six.
