Researchers first spotted the insect, dubbed the “ManhattAnt,” while doing a survey on ants in New York City in 2011. By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.

CNN —The Atlantic hurricane season might be quiet for now, but the same can’t be said in the Pacific, where Tropical Storm Hone is threatening to deliver a weekend blow to Hawaii. A tropical storm watch has been raised for Hawaii’s Big Island with the storm on track to pass close to the state this weekend. The storm is forecast to pass about 150 miles south of the Big Island late Saturday into Sunday morning. CNN WeatherIn addition to potentially flooding rainfall, Hone will also deliver gusty winds this weekend, especially over the Big Island. The system will weaken as it approaches Hawaii, but whatever remains of it could take a swipe at the state late next week.

It was a moment the political world had been wondering about for weeks. If Vice President Kamala Harris had a good convention, would it knock former President Donald J. Trump further off his game? Would all that positive press for Ms. Harris — the big ratings, celebrity froth and the double-barreled Obama zingers — drive Mr. Trump deeper into his most self-destructive patterns? Mr. Trump had turned up at the restaurant to stand among service industry workers and promote his “no tax on tips” policy proposal. He stayed mostly focused — he did not talk all about himself but rather about the plight of waiters and bartenders.

Read previewIt took 16 years to make "The Crow" reboot, but now it's finally out, critics say the Bill Skarsgård-fronted comic book movie is "repulsive" and "unfathomably awful." "The Crow" was finally released on Thursday, and the reviews are terrible. The Guardian's Benjamin Lee described the reboot as "unfathomably awful," and criticized Skarsgård and Twigs' performance. However, that isn't always the case — especially for comic book movies. I'm a frequent traveler spending $1,300 a year on credit card fees to get great perks. My United℠ Explorer Card card has gotten me priority boarding but I'm not sure I want to keep it. For years, I prided myself on using no-fee credit cards that offered a small amount of cash back on purchases. But I changed my mind once I started traveling more and learning about the perks some credit cards offered. Here are my favorite travel card perks, plus a few I've enjoyed but would be OK losing.

Hailed as Britain's Bill Gates, Lynch sold Autonomy, his groundbreaking data-management company, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion. Shareholders and business commentators were puzzled about what HP, a hardware company, would do with Autonomy, a software company — and why the latter was worth $11 billion. A year after the acquisition, HP wrote down $8.8 billion of the purchase value and accused Lynch of lying about Autonomy's finances. Lynch said HP stifled Autonomy with mismanagement and bureaucracy that pushed out employees and stymied sales. "This verdict closes the book on a relentless 13-year effort to pin HP's well-documented ineptitude on Dr. Lynch," Morvillo said in a joint statement with his attorney colleague Brian Heberlig.

My husband is about to start his 19th year of teaching, our eldest is starting 7th grade, and our youngest is starting 1st grade. Most of our parent friends try to control for all the variables — school, teachers, and sometimes even friends or classmates — and we've learned that it rarely works as intended. Even though the school was "better" on paper, it did not mean it was the better academic situation for every student. My husband and I, who are actively hands-off when requesting teachers, broke our rule regarding our youngest starting pre-K in our public independent school district. Though her teacher was amazing, still, our youngest had a completely different experience and struggled through most of her first year.

A few facts worth considering:By the time the 2009 revisions came out (824,000 jobs were overstated), the National Bureau of Economic Research had already declared a recession six months earlier. (It would subsequently be revised higher in the two of those quarters, one of which was revised higher to show growth, rather than contraction. As a signal that job growth has been overstated by an average of 68,000 per month during the revision period, it is more or less accurate. In the cutting process, the Fed will follow growth and jobs data more closely, just as it monitored inflation data more closely in the hiking process. The jobs data could be subject to noise from immigrant hiring and can be volatile.
