Miller's team compared AI's growth with past tech waves, finding consistent growth rates. In fact, the generative-AI wave looks a lot more like past tech waves than its revolutionary capabilities would suggest. That "rule of three" theory puts the value of the AI wave at about $20 trillion. Miller likened the AI wave to the mobile wave in about 2009, when there were few applications for the iPhone. "So the question is if compute is the primary underlying driver of economic activity, economic growth, economic opportunity, then there's an argument that it's actually bigger."

Morgan Stanley estimates Amazon can cut 13,834 managers and save roughly $3 billion next year. Morgan Stanley assumed that the cost per manager was $200,000 to $350,000 a year. Based on those numbers, Amazon would stand to save $2.1 billion to $3.6 billion next year if it cut those 13,834 manager roles. Morgan Stanley estimated that the savings would account for roughly 3% to 5% of Amazon's projected operating profit for 2025. The AI bubble, Taylor said, will be similar to the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s. AdvertisementThe buzz surrounding AI may echo the exuberance and excesses of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s, OpenAI chairman Bret Taylor said in a podcast that aired on Wednesday. "I think the AI bubble will rhyme with the dot-com bubble and I believe with the benefit of hindsight, most of the excess of the dot-com bubble might have been justified," Taylor added. Most of today's leading tech companies like Amazon and Google, Taylor said, were started during the dot-com bubble. Advertisement"A huge percentage of the gains in the stock market over the past 30 years have more or less been these digital companies created in the dot-com bubble," Taylor said.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has surpassed Jeff Bezos as the world's second richest person. The Facebook co-founder now trails Tesla chief Elon Musk by roughly $50 billion, the index showed. Meta has pointed to its hefty artificial intelligence investments as helping improve the performance of its online advertising platform as a reason for its sales growth. The company's online advertising system suffered a major setback in 2021 when Apple introduced an iOS privacy update that weakened its ability to track users across the web. Investors reacted favorably to Meta's cost cutting while the company's online advertising business began to rebound and was bolstered by the massive digital ad spending campaigns by Chinese-linked retailers Temu and Shien.

OpenAI is now worth $157 billion, but it can't rest easy yet. Now comes the hard part: emerging victorious in a fiercely competitive AI industry. Though Sam Altman's company cemented its status as a frontrunner in the generative AI boom this week, securing a new $157 billion valuation after raising $6.6 billion of fresh capital from marquee investors, its leading position is hardly guaranteed. Sure, Altman's company now casts a massive shadow over the industry with its fresh $157 billion valuation. AI companies have been spending huge sums to purchase chips from Jensen Huang's Nvidia.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday opined on pervasive inflation, saying companies must bring down prices if they want to attract consumers in the current economic landscape. "Companies are so reluctant to take prices down because they don't want to hurt their treasured gross margins," he said. He also attributed some of the issues at Nike to inflation, saying they're "emblematic of how higher prices are changing the face of business." While consumers protest higher prices, Cramer said they — and Wall Street — are responding well to companies that offer bargains or have reduced prices. He added that companies that roll back prices can offset the costs with volume.

MIT economist warns AI infrastructure investments may not meet investor profit expectations. Only 5% of jobs are likely to be significantly impacted by AI in the next decade, according to the economist. That's according to MIT Economist Daron Acemoglu, who told Bloomberg in an interview that the hype surrounding AI may not meet its lofty expectations. The most optimistic scenario, according to Acemoglue, is that AI hype cools and some applications of the technology take hold. In such a scenario, investors and tech executives would become disenchanted with AI, leading to a "AI spring followed by AI winter."
