Rising global trade tensions present a risk to the euro area economy, the bloc's central bank found in its biannual Financial Stability Review out on Wednesday. The European Central Bank also said weak growth was now a bigger threat than high inflation in the 20-nation euro zone. The latest figures recorded euro zone economic growth at a two-year high of 0.4% in the third quarter, while headline inflation hit 2% in October. "Rising global trade tensions and a possible further strengthening of protectionist tendencies across the world raise concerns about the potential adverse impact on global growth, inflation and asset prices," the Financial Stability Review said. Economists say the knock-on impact of implementing these measures could drag on the euro, if a slowdown in exports spurs the ECB to cut interest rates further and faster.

China's central bank on Wednesday kept major benchmark lending rates unchanged, as Beijing assesses the effects of its recent stimulus measures. The People's Bank of China said it would keep the 1-year loan prime rate at 3.1%, and the 5-year LPR at 3.6%. The 1-year LPR affects corporate and most household loans in China, while the 5-year LPR acts as a benchmark for mortgage rates. Only retail sales beat expectations, with a 4.8% year-on-year increase, indicating that recent stimulus had started seeping into certain sectors of the economy. Goldman, however, maintained "overweight" stance on China equities, forecasting a 13% upside to the benchmark CSI 300 index next year.

So why shouldn’t federal employees who are paid with taxpayer dollars be required to be in office?” the source said. Ending remote work across government is being considered a potential “early candidate” for executive orders that members of DOGE will recommend to Trump, the source said. “I can’t abandon this career,” one Library of Congress worker who lives in the Midwest told CNN. Another federal employee who works remotely told CNN that they would have to commute two to three hours to the nearest office. Other targets beyond remote workRemote work isn’t the only cost-cutting measure that is likely to be addressed through executive orders.

Federal investigators established a trail of payments from Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s choice to be attorney general, to women including some who testified that Mr. Gaetz hired them for sex, according to a document obtained by The New York Times and a lawyer representing some of the women. The document, assembled by investigators during a three-year sex-trafficking investigation into Mr. Gaetz, is a chart that shows a web of thousands of dollars in Venmo payments between Mr. Gaetz and a group of his friends, associates and women who had drug-fueled sex parties between 2017 and 2020, according to testimony that participants are said to have given to federal and congressional investigators. At the parties, women, and a girl who was 17 at the time, were paid for sex, according to accounts of the participants’ testimony from people briefed on what they said. The document bolsters recent claims by a lawyer for two of the women who say they had sex with Mr. Gaetz for money. It shows thousands of dollars in payments Mr. Gaetz made to both of the lawyer’s clients.

Microsoft emerged as the most under-owned megacap stock among institutional investors, signaling a rebound could be on the horizon, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley thinks that stocks tend to experience a technical pull higher when active ownership is much lower than their weightings in the S & P 500, and vice versa. The gap between Microsoft's S & P 500 weighting and institutional ownership stood at 2.08% by the end of the third quarter, making it the most under-owned Big Tech name, Morgan Stanley said. After Microsoft, Apple is the second-most under-owned megacap tech stock coming out of the third quarter. On the flip side, the most over-owned tech stock at the end of September is software company Intuit , which could see a technical downward pull soon, according to Morgan Stanley.

CNN —Two Georgia election workers who won a massive verdict against Rudy Giuliani because he defamed them after the 2020 election are asking a federal judge to hold him in contempt of court. The pair, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, say Trump continues to repeat harmful lies about them on his nightly broadcast, in defiance of court orders. Accordingly, the Court should hold him in contempt and enter civil contempt sanctions,” Freeman and Moss’ lawyers wrote to Judge Beryl Howell in the DC District Court. Howell presided over the trial where a jury found Giuliani defamed Freeman and Moss so severely that he should pay them $150 million. He has already lost his law license because of his work for the Trump campaign in 2020, which included his efforts in Georgia.

Next year, Trump’s Treasury secretary will act as the quarterback, executing his economic gameplan. It will also fall to Trump’s Treasury secretary to put out fires in financial markets or in the real economy like the regional bank failures that rocked Wall Street and Washington early last year. The long-standing promise of a ban on menthol cigarettes, which has been years in the making, is unlikely to move forward before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. The FDA announced it would begin the process of banning menthol tobacco cigarettes in 2021. Since then, it has done all it is legally authorized to do to put the finalized rule to ban menthol in motion. But it’s politics, not public health, that is likely to keep menthol cigarettes on the market as Biden’s term ends. Murthy deferred questions about whether the Biden administration would push the ban through as one of its final acts.

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he will nominate Mehmet Oz, a former Pennsylvania Senate candidate and TV doctor, to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, faced criticism in 2020, for promoting the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19. Oz’s TV show aired from 2009 until 2022, when he made an unsuccessful bid for Senate. Trump made an appearance on Oz’s television program, “The Dr. Oz Show,” during his 2016 presidential campaign to reveal the results of his physical examination. More consequential, however, was the stagnant or shrinking turnout in these cities, which — coupled with turnout growth in Republican counties across the blue wall — drove Trump’s victory. While the number of voters throughout the rest of Michigan grew by 2.6%, the number in Detroit fell by 4%. NBC News Decision DeskThe third large blue wall city is Milwaukee, which makes up about 60% of Milwaukee County’s population. Even though turnout grew slightly overall in the city, just over half of precincts (58%) experienced a turnout decrease. Comparing Milwaukee’s sluggish turnout to Dane County — which is Wisconsin’s other large Democratic county, where turnout increased by over 6% — helps to show how different demographics may explain turnout changes.

Fresh from a devastating loss to Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris may now head to Capitol Hill to defy him in what could be her last major act in office. As the president of the Senate, Harris wields the constitutional power to provide a tie-breaking vote. “We are going to use the lame duck to confirm judges. Senate Democrats who pulled off victories even as President-elect Donald Trump won their states believe the Democratic Party can learn some lessons from their races as it grapples with losing control of Washington. Democrats still lost the Senate majority despite those victories, with Republicans flipping seats in Montana, Ohio and West Virginia. Democrats acknowledged Harris faced some headwinds in running a protracted campaign after taking over the ticket in late July. And while his party lost the White House, the House and the Senate, Schumer touted the Senate victories as more evidence that the party should be focused on the economy. Sometimes Democrats may be a little too solution-oriented, and people want to, first before you get to the solutions, hear empathy.

“We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” he said. Retailers, including Walmart, are contending with a mixed bag of factors this holiday season. The holiday season is also shorter this year and parts of the U.S. have had unseasonably warm weather, two dynamics that could hurt retailers. That would be lower than the 3.9% year-over-year jump from the 2022 to 2023 holiday season, when spending totaled $955.6 billion. DETROIT — Stellantis is delaying the launch of its Ram electric pickup trucks from this year until the first half of 2025, as the trans-Atlantic automaker continues testing the vehicles. CEO Carlos Tavares on Tuesday declined to disclose details about what caused the delays or specific timing on the electric trucks, which include an all-electric “REV” model and an extended-range “Ramcharger” that’s equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine. Stellantis’ upcoming electric pickups are the first that will be built on the company’s new “STLA Frame platform” for its larger trucks and Jeep SUVs. It is expected to be a “multi-energy platform” that’s capable of internal combustion engines and hybrids, as well as electric models using batteries, fuel cells and range-extended electric propulsion systems. Doing so would deliver on Trump’s campaign comments about removing such incentives and EV initiatives.

SpaceX's Starship spacecraft sits atop its powerful Super Heavy rocket at the company's Boca Chica launchpad, near Brownsville, Texas, on November 16. Musk’s claims came after the FAA proposed $633,009 in civil penalties against SpaceX, saying the company violated launch license requirements twice during flights of its workhorse Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX has denied wrongdoing related to those requirements, saying none of the allegations related to public safety. Still, the FAA granted SpaceX its long-awaited license to move forward with Starship’s fifth uncrewed test launch in October — and that same launch license covers this week’s test flight. It marks the first time that SpaceX has not had to go back to the FAA to approve launch license changes since the company began this testing campaign years ago.
