In the flood of election polls you’ll see over the next few weeks, most polling groups will include responses from “likely voters.” And often from nobody else. In theory, these poll numbers should yield more accurate results, since the people who actually vote are the ones who dictate the outcome on Election Day. After all, how exactly can a pollster know who is “likely” to vote, and who therefore will be the focus of their results? The choices they make are important, because the results of likely-voter polls can differ from those that sample a wider population, such as everyone who is registered to vote. In a close race like this year’s presidential contest, one candidate might lead in a poll among likely voters, while another might lead in the same poll’s tally of registered voters.

China's yuan rose to its strongest level in nearly 16 months on Friday on bets that Beijing will unveil fresh economic stimulus following a jumbo U.S. rate cut, though gains were capped by dollar buying from Chinese state banks. The onshore yuan strengthened to as much as 7.0420 per dollar, the firmest level since May 24, 2023, on track for a six-session rising streak. The Fed cut rates by a larger than usual 50-basis-points on Wednesday. On Friday, China's major state-owned banks were seen buying dollars in the onshore market to prevent the yuan from appreciating too fast. Prior to the market opening, the People's Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 7.0644 per dollar, its strongest in nearly 16 months.

How to play the Fed decision using options on gold

Gold is trading at all-time highs due to a combination of inflation concerns, geopolitical risks, and expectations around monetary policy. Historically, gold tends to benefit from dovish monetary policies, especially when they signal prolonged low interest rates, which reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold. Gold has maintained its bullish momentum, trading near $2,600, and appears to be breaking into new all-time highs. Looking at the chart, gold has consistently made higher highs and higher lows, a sign of strong upward momentum. CNN —The United States reclaimed the Solheim Cup for the first time in seven years with a 15 ½ - 12 ½ victory over the Europeans on Sunday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Team USA last won the Solheim Cup in 2017 with Europe winning in 2019 and 2021 before retaining the trophy in 2023 when the teams drew 14-14. 1 Nelly Korda led the USA’s challenge, winning both her matches as the USA underlined its dominance. While Europe looked to fight back on day two, Team USA constantly prevented the Europeans from clawing back the deficit and held on to lead 10-6 after the second day. Europe went into day three needing to repeat the Miracle of Medinah from the 2012 Ryder Cup – the men’s equivalent of the Solheim Cup.

For this nuclear clock, the scientists used ultraviolet light to excite nuclear particles in an atom of thorium-229 embedded in solid crystal. For decades, atomic clocks have been used in GPS technologies, for space exploration and for keeping international time. The study of physics itself could be revolutionized by using nuclear clocks alongside atomic clocks, according to Zhang. “If the nuclear clock and the atomic clock transition frequency ratio is changing over time, it would be an indication of new physics.”Though there is still much progress to be made before nuclear clocks surpass the performance of atomic clocks — or replace them — these findings hint that such a time isn’t far off, Kolkowitz said. “As better UV laser sources are developed and as some of the mysteries and tricks of nuclear clocks get worked out, I expect that eventually some of the kinds of experiments we are currently doing in my lab to test relativity and search for new physics with atomic clocks will instead be performed with nuclear clocks,” Kolkowitz said.

Exchange-traded fund inflows have already topped monthly records in 2024, and managers think inflows could see an impact from the money market fund boom before year-end. "Whether it be flows into REIT ETFs or just the broader ETF market, that's going to be a real potential catalyst here to watch." Total assets in money market funds set a new high of $6.24 trillion this past week, according to the Investment Company Institute. "If that yield comes down, the return on money market funds should come down as well," said State Street Global Advisors' Matt Bartolini in the same interview. "Assuming stocks don't experience a massive pullback, I think investors will continue to allocate here, and ETF inflows can break that record," he said.

How plaid became popular for school uniforms
  + stars: | 2024-09-05 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —As students return to school, one patterned textile now synonymous with uniforms will make its seasonal reappearance on pleated skirts, jumpers and ties: plaid. It’s a family of textiles with broad scholarly appeal, with both religious and secular schools worldwide incorporating plaid into uniforms, from Mexico to Japan to Australia. Centuries of romanticizing Highlander clanship and identity has likely influenced our contemporary understanding of the textile, Maxwell noted. But the textile didn’t become a fixture of school uniforms until the 1960s, according to historian and educator Sally Dwyer-McNulty, who authored “Common Threads: A Cultural History of Clothing in American Catholicism” in 2014. (Dwyer-McNulty herself attended two different Catholic schools in Philadelphia, wearing plaid uniforms through high school).

The team then tracked the prices of the recommended stocks from the day the videos were posted up until June 21, 2024. The most profit that an investor could have generated from a single stock would have been Nvidia, which grew 63.08% in the period surveyed. If a person invested $1,000 in every stock recommended in the one video that got the most bets right, the gains would have amounted to $4,860. On the other hand, putting money into all the stocks recommended in the video that got most bets wrong would have led to a loss of $1,517.
