Dubbed the Iron Beam, the shield aims to use high-power lasers to counter an array of projectiles, including missiles, drones, rockets and mortars, Israel’s defense ministry said this week. “The initial capability of the ground-based laser system… is expected to enter operational service within one year,” he said. People who lost a significant amount of weight with semaglutide saw major improvements in osteoarthritis knee pain, research published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine finds. “Any sort of dramatic weight loss will relieve pain,” Bliddal said. In another study led by Bliddal, people with knee osteoarthritis were given an older weight loss drug, liraglutide. The average BMI in that study was about 32, lower than the average in the new study. Most of the people in the study had a BMI over 35, and nearly half had a BMI of over 40.

A pig in Oregon has tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, the Agriculture Department said Wednesday. The update comes as the H5N1 virus continues to spread rapidly among dairy cows across the country. The bird flu outbreak in dairy cows has infected 387 herds across 14 states so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last week, the CDC released results of a monthslong investigation that found no evidence of bird flu spreading from human to human. It's unclear how the pig in Oregon was exposed to bird flu, although earlier this month state officials detected the virus in poultry on the farm.

The shooting victim was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon, according to Debra Silverstein, the alderman for Chicago’s 50th Ward, where the shooting occurred. Hate crime charges still a question markAs some Jewish leaders call for hate crime charges, police say they still need to interview the suspect and collect evidence before considering such charges. On Monday, Silverstein said she was upset with the lack of hate crime charges in the case. “The police have assured me that they are continuing to gather evidence, and additional charges – including hate crime charges – can still be added,” Silverstein said. Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, framed the effort in Virginia as a commonsense way of ensuring noncitizens don’t vote. At issue are about 1,600 voter registrations that Virginia said came from self-identified noncitizens but that a US District Court said hadn’t been fully vetted for citizenship status. Noncitizens are not allowed to vote in federal elections; none of the lower court rulings had changed that fact. But documented cases of noncitizens voting are extremely rare. Those opposed to the program relied on a 1993 law, the National Voter Registration Act, which bars states from making “systematic” changes to voting rolls with 90 days of a federal election.

Garcia believes Character.AI is responsible for the death of her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, who died by suicide in February, according to a lawsuit she filed against the company last week. When Garcia first heard he was interacting with an AI chatbot, she said she thought it was something like a video game. However, within months of starting to use the platform, Setzer became “noticeably withdrawn, spent more and more time alone in his bedroom, and began suffering from low self-esteem. “There were no suicide pop-up boxes that said, ‘If you need help, please call the suicide crisis hotline.’ None of that,” she said.
