The art market is in a correction as big spenders fade
  + stars: | 2024-10-24 | by ( Robert Frank | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The number of wealthy collectors surveyed who plan to purchase art in the next year fell to 43% from over half in 2023. The median spending on art by wealthy collectors remains stable at around $50,000 a year, according to the survey. Higher interest rates also raised the opportunity cost of buying art, since wealthy collectors could earn an easy 5% or more from cash and Treasuries. Just as in the classic-car market, the art market is going through a generational shift that's created a mismatch between supply and demand. According to the survey, the high end of the art market, or works priced at $10 million or more, was the strongest before 2022.

But there are some weak points — like a growing federal debt load. There are a few less-rosy data points out there, like rising long-term unemployment and a historically high level of federal debt. Federal debt is high compared to GDP, even looking beyond the spike of the debt as a share of GDP during the pandemic. While federal debt as a share of GDP was slightly above 100% before the pandemic, recent figures are much higher than in the past. Federal debt was 120% of GDP in the second quarter of this year.

For Chinese imports, Trump has proposed an even steeper 60% tariff. Many economists have warned that tariffs planned by Trump will hurt global economic growth and drive up inflation in the US, as well as abroad if other countries introduce higher levies on US imports in response. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also sees a hit to global gross domestic product from increased tariffs around the world, according to its latest World Economic Outlook. But recent sales data from the auto-industry tracker Cox Automotive is worth examining ahead of Tesla's results on Wednesday. Tesla sold almost 17,000 Cybertrucks in the third quarter, Cox estimated, making it the third-most-popular EV in the US during the period. That's more than Ford's F-150 Lightning, Rivian's R1T, and Chevy's Silverado EV, Cox data shows. General Motors reported surprisingly solid results earlier this week and highlighted strong EV sales. Municipal bonds not only offer solid, tax-free income — they should also see some capital appreciation later this year, according to UBS. Consumers are still spending and the combination of job growth, higher wages and slowing inflation should continue to push households' real disposable income higher, he added. Further, the longer end of the muni bond yield curve is also starting to look attractive, he said. Investors hoping to take a diversified approach to municipal bonds may want to consider an exchange-traded fund. Starboard revealed a holding in the stock and Salesforce responded by cutting thousands of employees and moving up its timeline for widening its adjusted operating margin. On Tuesday, Starboard said in a presentation that Salesforce "can continue to become more efficient and more profitable." And Starboard said Salesforce should commit to adhering to the rule of 50 by the 2028 fiscal year. The activist firm laid out two scenarios, both of which involved Salesforce's revenue growth accelerating and its adjusted operating margin widening. The Agentforce technology for automating customer interactions, which Salesforce discussed at its Dreamforce conference in September, has the potential to boost revenue growth, Starboard said.

The launch of margin trading follows the recent approval of the product, after Robinhood held conversations with Britain's financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Margin trading is a rarity in the U.K., where regulators see it as more controversial because of the risks involved to users. Some platforms in the country limit margin trading for only high-net-worth individuals or businesses. In the case of margin trading, investors can use borrowed money to increase the size of their trades. At the time of launch, Robinhood was unable to offer U.K. users the option of margin trading, pending discussions with the FCA.

Odds of a "no landing" scenario for the economy are rising amid continued strong economic data. The "no landing" scenario entails a continued run of hot economic data and growth that boosts markets but also precludes a steep rate-cutting cycle from the Federal Reserve. According to Cox, that means that short-term interest rates will drop to around 3% in the no landing scenario, even if long-term rates remain elevated. AdvertisementAfter all, a no landing scenario is the best outcome for the economy, Cox said, and given hot growth, the situation effectively tosses recession fears out the window. This would be just the fourth time in US history that the Fed has cut interest rates without a downturn, he added.

Investors worried about a market correction should adjust their portfolios, David Rosenberg says. The top economist has warned stocks are in a bubble and at risk of a major decline. Investors need to exercise caution and avoid following the "herd mentality," Rosenberg said, pointing to the fervor for mega-cap tech stocks. Instead, he said, investors should focus on stocks with strong business models, strong growth, and good prices, and add some "insurance" to their portfolios. Most forecasters on Wall Street still expect a strong performance from equities into year-end and 2025.
