Oil climbs as Mideast tension back in focus
  + stars: | 2023-12-04 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil futures rose on Monday as geopolitical tension in the Middle East returned to focus, spurring concerns about supply from the region, but uncertainty over OPEC+ voluntary output cuts and global fuel demand growth clouded the sector's outlook. Brent crude futures climbed 28 cents, or 0.4%, to $79.16 a barrel by 0018 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were at $74.36 a barrel, up 29 cents, or 0.4%. "A re-emergence of geopolitical tension over the weekend has come to the aid of an ailing crude oil price on the reopen this morning," IG markets analyst Tony Sycamore said. The resumption of the Israel-Hamas war fueled the bullish momentum for oil prices, CMC Markets analyst Tina Teng said. "However, oil prices may continue to be under pressure for the time being due to China's disappointing economic recovery and the ramp-up of U.S. production," Teng said.

Vietnam has already rail connections to China, but the system is old with limited capacity on the Vietnam side. The upgraded railway would pass through the region where Vietnam has its largest deposits of rare earths, of which China is by far the world's biggest refiner. Chinese and Vietnamese rare earths industry experts discussed last week stronger cooperation on processing the minerals, according to Vietnamese state media. It is unclear how much China would contribute to the upgraded railway track in Vietnam and whether Hanoi would accept sizeable financing from Beijing on this. A strengthened railway link could also boost Vietnam's export to China, mostly of agriculture products, boost Chinese tourism to northern Vietnam and further integrate the two countries' manufacturing industries, which experts already consider as symbiotic, with factories in Vietnam largely assembling components produced in China.

Marjorie Taylor Greene sent $2,000 checks to 18 of her colleagues' campaigns in March. But spokespeople for two of those vulnerable Republicans — Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin and Rep. Michelle Steel of California — now say that their campaigns didn't end up cashing the checks. Though the March 29 contributions appear in Greene's campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission, they never appeared in Van Orden or Steel's filings. Greene's campaign, which did not respond to Insider's request for comment, has not amended its filings with the Federal Election Commission to reflect that the checks were never cashed. LONDON, Sept 25 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Western countries have a window of opportunity to come up with a credible infrastructure plan for the developing world. U.S. President Joe Biden has been talking up the West’s so-called Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII). To be fair, the G7 is stepping up efforts to involve the private sector. These initiatives are running in parallel with efforts to get the World Bank to cooperate more with the private sector. For developing countries, it is good to have two rival infrastructure initiatives competing for their attention.

The California bill would make gender affirmation one factor among many that courts already have to consider in custody proceedings, including whether a parent has been abusive and how much contact the child has with the parents. The bill would not require judges to prioritize whether a parent affirms their child's gender identity over other factors. The state Senate passed the resolution, and it now heads to the Assembly. State Sen. Shannon Grove, a Republican from Bakersfield, said she didn’t think other states would agree to that. The bipartisan California bill would not legalize the sale of the drugs.

Women are fueling China's box office despite making up a smaller share of the population — and Hollywood should take note. The higher-than-expected box office spending by Chinese women not only shows a cultural shift, but also a new entry point for American studios. Tapping into this new trend of female moviegoers in China could be a new strategy for Hollywood. While Warner Bros.' "Barbie" has collected only around $35 million so far in China, Tran suggests studios could look to capitalize on a demographic that is being underserved in the marketplace. "Purchasing power of women in China has been increasing for several years," Tan explained.
