Spot gold was up 0.5% at $2,010.99 per ounce by 0758 GMT, after hitting its highest since May 16. U.S. gold futures rose 0.4% to $2,011.70. Reuters Graphics"What's moving gold at the moment is the lower U.S. dollar because of the recent soft data," said Kyle Rodda, a financial market analyst at Capital.com. The dollar index (.DXY) edged down 0.1% against its rivals, not far from a more than two-month low level touched last week, making gold less expensive for other currency holders. Recent data showing signs of slowing inflation in the U.S. has boosted expectations that the Fed could begin easing monetary conditions sooner than expected.

Wall Street is set to wrap up a strong month next week as stocks gun for new highs heading into year end. The Nasdaq Composite is on pace to close out the month with a double-digit advance, up 10%. In contrast to September and October, which are typically weak periods for stocks, the seasonal patterns are now in favor of equities. This week, LPL Financial's Adam Turnquist pointed out that more than half, or 55%, of S & P 500 stocks closed above their 200-day moving average. It's set to show a rise of 0.2%, down from the 0.7% rise in the prior month, according to FactSet consensus estimates.

The S&P 500 is down 7% since the start of September and briefly entered correction territory from its summer high last week. However, strategists say these threats are mostly priced into stocks, but higher earnings aren't. After three straight quarters of contracting profits, both BofA and UBS expect earnings to grow at least 3% year-over-year in Q3. "Within the context of our expectations for a continued choppy backdrop, we are incrementally more positive," Lerner wrote in a late October note. Truist's more constructive view on equities is based on strong results so far in Q3, Lerner wrote.

The so-called Magnificent Seven group of stocks, which rose together for most of 2023, are starting to break-up this earnings season. The Magnificent Seven constituents (Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia, and Tesla) have been the main performance drivers in the S & P 500 index all year. The super-duper seven have added almost $4 trillion in market cap in 2023 alone while collectively as a group contributed roughly 90% of the S & P 500's 2023 gain. I want to focus on one of the high-flying Magnificent Seven names: Tesla . Using the SPDR S & P 500 ETF (SPY) , traders saw the 200-day violated at $422 and Relative Strength Indicator levels have now been slammed into oversold territory.

The S&P 500 has slid about 5% since reaching its late-July high, but so far this month the benchmark index has rebounded. In 12 of those times the S&P 500 was higher six months later, Turnquist said. Reuters GraphicsStocks have tended to perform well at year end -- with November and December logging the second and third-biggest average S&P 500 monthly gains -- though this year the trends may portend even more favorably. That was followed by a 28% rally in the S&P 500 through late July of this year. Further, notes Delwiche, stock market breadth has been weak.

2023's surge in technology stocks fizzled in September as rising rates put a heavy dent in the artificial intelligence-fueled rally . Over the next few weeks, Deepwater Asset Management's Gene Munster is keeping an eye on September's consumer price index and nonfarm payrolls report ahead of the start of big technology earnings later in the month. "The good news is that this should right itself once the September quarter earnings come up." Sean Sun, a portfolio manager at Thornburg Investment Management, likened the earnings season to a "gut check" on AI beneficiaries. But these drawdowns could offer opportunities for long-term investors to snatch up technology bets at bargain prices, said Nancy Tengler.

He likes "defensive growth stocks," industrials, and energy stocks. Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson says the stock market's rally is likely running out of steam, and quickly. Also, on technicals, market breadth — or the share of stocks participating in the rally — is still weak. Morgan StanleyIn addition to over-extended technicals, Wilson said deteriorating fundamentals threaten the market. In particular, he's concerned about "real" consumer spending growth — or growth that accounts for inflation — which he and Morgan Stanley economists believe will dip negative year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2023.
