This article is part of “Dealing the Dead,” a series investigating the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research. State regulators have ordered a Texas medical school to immediately halt its practice of liquefying bodies after using them for training and research. The University of North Texas Health Science Center said in 2020 that it would renovate a Fort Worth anatomy facility, including installing two alkaline hydrolysis units. The University of North Texas Health and Science Center stopped using unclaimed bodies following NBC News' reporting. Dallas and Tarrant county officials did not immediately respond to questions about whether they agreed to allow the Health Science Center to liquefy unclaimed bodies.

In Britain, “Cafe Scientifique,” a laid-back science debate forum, kicked off in 1998 and “Pint of Science,” a three-day science festival, launched in May 2013. Unlike Western universities, which generally welcome the public, most Chinese campuses remain fenced off, keeping their academic resources exclusive to students, faculty and authorized personnel. Nationalist voices online have also grown into a powerful unofficial force policing speech across Chinese social media. Liang, who deemed the state-building talk “bold,” said he loves these academic pub sessions but suspects they will eventually face restriction.

The Oklahoma school district where a transgender student died this year after an altercation in a bathroom violated federal law by mishandling sexual harassment allegations, according to an investigation by the federal Education Department. The department’s Office of Civil Rights opened an investigation into Owasso Public Schools in March following a complaint from the Human Rights Campaign, the country’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization. A photograph of Nex Benedict is projected at a candlelight service in Oklahoma City on Feb. 24. The department said the district failed to respond to sexual harassment allegations repeatedly over three years, in violation of Title IX regulations that were implemented in 2020. The new regulations require district staff members to explain the process to file Title IX complaints or promptly contact complainants to discuss supportive measures like counseling or schedule changes.

The lawsuit is the latest sign of the long-simmering tensions between Ben & Jerry’s and consumer products maker Unilever. In its new lawsuit, Ben & Jerry’s says that Unilever has breached the terms of the 2022 settlement, which has remained confidential. As part of the agreement, however, Unilever is required to “respect and acknowledge the Ben & Jerry’s independent board’s primary responsibility over Ben & Jerry’s social mission,” according to the lawsuit. Ben & Jerry’s has positioned itself as socially conscious since Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield founded the company in a renovated gas station in 1978. In March, Unilever said it will spin off its ice cream business, which includes Ben & Jerry’s, by the end of 2025 to simplify its holdings.

Workers are struggling to get a handle on their jobs, and this failure falls on everyone — companies, managers, human-resources departments, and, in some cases, the workers themselves. The chaos has left employers, managers, and employees wondering just how much time and money it's worth investing in training in the first place. It's tough to learn by osmosis over Slack, and the deluge of HR apps and training modules isn't filling in the gaps. As workers and managers are increasingly overextended, these types of unmeasured, softer activities can fall by the wayside. Gavin emphasized that it's not just on companies and managers to make sure employees are learning and getting onboarded but also on individual workers.

CNN —After the suicide of a nonbinary student last February spurred a monthslong federal investigation, the US Department of Education found Title IX violations in an Oklahoma public school district including multiple failures to respond to notices of sexual harassment. The DOE’s Office of Civil Rights announced a resolution Wednesday with the Owasso Public School District to remedy Title IX violations linked to sexual harassment in district schools. The OCR investigation began last March, weeks after the death of nonbinary teen, Nex Benedict. The investigation also identified several other instances in the last three years when district staff failed to properly respond to sexual harassment complaints. The agreement between the DOE and the school district requires the district to implement new policies and procedures and additional training for staff and students.

A New Jersey school district faces legal action from three separate lawsuits filed this year, following the firing of its openly gay school superintendent. In a lawsuit filed in May, John Berenato, the former superintendent of the Manchester Township School District, accused the district of sexual orientation discrimination that led to his firing in November of last year. According to court documents, Antonucci was with Berenato when he received “disgusting derogatory texts regarding sexual acts” from district board members. Burns, an out lesbian, was the only LGBTQ district administrator as of February, according to court documents. Four years after the radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico collapsed, a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is shining a light on the unprecedented failures that caused its destruction. The zinc gradually lost its hold on the cables suspending the telescope’s main platform over the reflector dish. The telescope was built in the 1960s with money from the Defense Department amid a push to develop anti-ballistic missile defenses. Following a few other cable failures, the federal agency decided to begin a plan to decommission the telescope in November 2020. In 2022, the National Science Foundation said it would not rebuild Puerto Rico's renowned radio telescope.

Moulton’s office also shared a transcript of a voicemail that it said was left by Art, the contents of which were first reported by The Boston Globe. My high-achieving high school senior had been avoiding her college applications. AdvertisementMy high school senior is typically a happy, easygoing kid who set her sights on graduating in the top 50 of her class before her first day of freshman year. Many high school graduates in our small city go to the local college for two years, then transfer to a University of California or California State school. It's an affordable route that would relieve the pressure, but she said no; she wanted a four-year college experience. My goal was to talk about college only during those scheduled times unless a deadline needed to be met during the week.

A coalition of parents attempting to block a state law that would require that the Ten Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms by next year have won a legal battle in federal court. The judge wrote that the law is "facially unconstitutional" and "in all applications," barring Louisiana from enforcing it and adopting rules around it that require all public K-12 schools and colleges to exhibit posters of the Ten Commandments. We've shown that in our briefs by creating a number of posters," Murrill told reporters. The displays included historical context for the commandments that the state believes makes its law constitutional. When asked what he would tell parents concerned about having the Ten Commandments in public schools, Landry said in August: "Tell your child not to look at them."
