And because growing seaweed doesn’t need land or require irrigation, it could be more sustainable than traditional agriculture. Seaweed jamIf you’re looking to take your breakfast ideas in a new direction, then seaweed could be the way to go. But seaweed soup isn’t only consumed in Asia. In cooperation with Guernsey Dairy, the UK-based Seaweed Food Company has experimented with using algae in dairy products. She believes that these inventive dishes will bust people’s misconceptions of seaweed as “slimy and a bit smelly.”

‘El Conde’ Review: His Bite Is Worse

Pablo Larraín’s black-and-white horror spoof “El Conde” is founded on a ferocious sight gag: the former dictator Augusto Pinochet soaring into the night on a quest for human blood. This Pinochet, played with imperious cruelty by Jaime Vadell, was once a rebel-eating French royalist who sailed to South America in search of fresh meat. It’s a comic premise — what, is this part of the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” extended universe? Larraín’s version of the man did that, too, with just one tweak: He blends his victims into a smoothie. And Larraín has resurrected him to drag him into the light.

The tourism connectionThe increased visibility of Sri Lankan cuisine has “been a long time coming,” Meewalla says. “This continuous online exposure makes people try out Sri Lankan food in restaurants.”Diverse influencesToday, more and more Sri Lankan chefs across the world are championing Sri Lankan food while defying common misconceptions about the cuisine. “It has helped change the global perception that Sri Lankan food is different from Indian food, and it’s not only a lot of curries paired with rice,” Williams says. Meewella points out that Sri Lankan cuisine is also heavily plant-based with many vegan options, which helps the cuisine stand out and resonate with global audiences. I cannot wait for casual Sri Lankan food to become a nationwide craving across America.”

The orange juice was also a little pulpy and separated overnight—a common occurrence with both centrifugal juicers we tested. Others you should know aboutGreat multiuse juicerKuvings’s 4-in-1 masticating juicer comes with attachments to make smoothies, sorbets and nut milks, too. Masticating juicers use a rotating, screw-shaped augur to crush and press fresh produce to extract juice, while centrifugal juicers rely on a high-speed spinning metal blade to pulverize produce into a mesh filter. Masticating juicers are slower and cost more, but often have higher yields and are therefore less wasteful (which we found to be true in our testing). Centrifugal juicers are faster and more powerful, but create foamier juice that’s more likely to separate.

Heading home from Lake Tahoe on Saturday, President Joe Biden exchanged a week of waterfront seclusion for the more workaday realities of running the country from Washington. Like many presidents, Biden spent a good portion of August away from the White House, trading the capital’s stifling heat for the beach or the mountains. Of the first 26 days in August, Biden spent only one day entirely at the White House. He also held events at the White House marking his legislative accomplishments. The White House did detail some of the presidential tasks Biden undertook.

It is a dynamic that seems to come with the job: A crisis will almost certainly unfold during any presidential holiday. The only occasion when Mr. Biden was spotted doing a recreational activity so far was on Wednesday, holding a banana-blueberry smoothie after his workout at PeloDog, a Pilates and cycle studio. He was asked by reporters whether he believed President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia was behind the plane crash. It looked that way, the president said, but he needed to find out more. (White House officials said the president was renting the house for “fair market value” but did not disclose details.)

Steve Jobs apparently "blew up" because he was unhappy with a photographer ahead of iMac's release. Levy writes that Jobs also was also unsure of a different photographer, but eventually was won over. A quarter of a century ago, in 1998, Steve Jobs announced the iMac — a piece of technology that reverberated across the personal computer industry and aided Apple's comeback. Jobs didn't calm down until Clow showed Jobs that the colors were in fact, correct, the biographer wrote in his book. Andy Cunningham, for example, told Insider that Jobs fired her "about five times."

Insider spoke with 53 current and former Aritzia employees, several of whom said that while the world of fashion is notoriously cutthroat, working at Aritzia was particularly grueling. Aritzia's spokesperson said the company's success was a "direct result of its high-performance culture." Bryan Johnson spends up to $2 million a year on a rigorous program to reduce his biological age. The tech exec recently confirmed he eats his last meal of the day at 11 a.m.His typical "dinner" consists of meals like an orange and fennel salad or a stuffed sweet potato. In order to dramatically reduce his biological age, 45-year-old tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson abides by a rather unconventional eating schedule: He eats his last meal of the day at 11 a.m.Johnson has an $2 million-a-year anti-aging program known as Project Blueprint. Johnson wrote that this behavior had repercussions on his mood, sleep, and performance. Since then only "Morning Bryan" is authorized to make decisions on when, what, and how much to eat, Johnson wrote.

I've written 10 books and journals on happiness, gratitude, habits and resilience that share how to cultivate a positive mindset amidst chaos. Here are five research-backed practices I do every day to feel happier:1. Sometimes I'll feel lofty ("Helping people live happy lives"), or laser-focused ("Finish writing the next chapter of my book"). A laundry list of 20 things would feel like too much, so this prioritization helps me sleep better. And by choosing only three tasks, I've already done the hard work of deciding what not to focus on.

[1/4] A team member from Interstellar Lab of Merritt Island, Florida, prepares Daikon Radish sprouts during NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge Phase 2 prize announcement on May 19, 2023. The NASA-sponsored Deep Space Food Challenge prompted Sheehan to modify his invention as a way of producing edible proteins, carbohydrates and fats from the same system. TASTES LIKE ... SEITANThe resulting single-cell protein drink entered in NASA's contest has the consistency of a whey protein shake, Sheehan said. But the imperative for self-contained, low-waste food production requiring minimal resources has become more pronounced as NASA sets its sights on returning astronauts to the moon and eventual human exploration of Mars and beyond. Advances in space-based food production also have direct applications for feeding Earth's ever-growing population in an era when climate change is making food more scarce and harder to produce, Fritsche said.
CNN —A man was arrested earlier this month at Boston Logan International Airport for allegedly carrying a “vampire straw” in his carry-on luggage. What is a vampire straw? The term “vampire straw” is used to refer to a titanium straw with a pointed edge. Massachusetts police told CNN the straw confiscated from the traveler had been purchased from Szabo Inc., which sells titanium vampire straws for $85. The legality of carrying a vampire straw depends on local knife laws, the TSA’s New England office told CNN in an email.
"I never saw myself as a speaker, let alone a motivational speaker," Leonard tells me while his assistant irons his jeans. 'When I ramble," Hunter told me, "hit me in the leg!" Every plane had been grounded, including the one stuck on the tarmac with an increasingly inebriated Hunter Thompson trapped inside. But by far the most all-consuming task was booking gigs for Hunter Thompson. Just before a debate with G. Gordon Liddy at Brown University, Hunter demanded that Betsy Berg, whom I now worked alongside at GTN, score him some crystal meth.
At her first full-time job since leaving influencing, the erstwhile smoothie-bowl virtuoso Lee Tilghman stunned a new co-worker with her enthusiasm for the 9-to-5 grind. She had earned north of $300,000 a year — and then dropped more than 150,000 followers, her entire management team, and most of her savings to become an I.R.L. The corporate gig, as a social media director for a tech platform, was a revelation. “I could just show up to work and do work,” Ms. Tilghman said. Ms. Tilghman, 33, recalled the encounter late last month during a 90-minute, $40 Zoom workshop she held to guide other creators through the process of leaving influencing.
Because of the versatility and hands-off aspect of the preparation, these are some of my favorite breakfast options for road trip vacations and camping adventures — but they work for busy at-home mornings, too. Overnight oats are one of the most versatile breakfast options out there — and can easily be taken on the road or enjoyed at home. NelliSyr/iStockphoto/Getty ImagesTartines, AKA open-faced sandwiches — or as I like to call them, “things on toast” — comprise a catchall category of breakfast options that can skew savory or sweet. When I have a few minutes and am feeling famished, my go-to move is to grab eggs and tortillas for breakfast tacos or burritos. Eggs and tortillas pair well in the morning to make breakfast tacos or burritos.
Remote work was for tech people or consultants — not for regular folks. So when COVID first hit and I, along with almost every other office worker in the world, got sent home to do my job, I didn't know what to expect. But now, management is backtracking and saying we need to be in the office at least two days a week. Earlier this year, management ordered us to go back to the office two days a month; starting this summer, they've mandated two days a week. I'm looking for another job, which is frustrating since I'd rather stay with my company and continue being the productive remote worker that I am.

This week, a reader's husband doesn't think the cost of a gym membership is a good use of money. The main extra we are fighting about right now is a gym membership. This shared responsibility often means shared debt, shared costs, shared sacrifice, and shared indulgences. But what shared finances don't necessitate are shared financial priorities — even if it might be easier when they align. Your husband's part of this compromise will mean making the commitment now to celebrate your last credit card payment by purchasing a gym membership for you at a nicer gym.
A Desperate Loser’s Guide to Surviving March Madness

March Madness is here, and with it, a cherished American tradition: guessing haphazardly on a chaotic sport and losing a contest to people we don’t especially like. I’d warn us both to sit it out, but it’s useless. I fill out a bracket year after year, and I’ve never won so much as a pencil, and I go back for more. I swear to you: Some years I can actually hear the bracket laughing at me. I should just toss my 2023 bracket in a blender and make myself a Loser’s Smoothie.

Her rise was tied to a period of reinvention for the wine world during which natural wine conquered millennial taste buds and became ubiquitous on menus across the US. Marissa Ross, Bon Appétit's wine editor from 2016 to 2020, often posted pictures of herself chugging straight from the bottle — a technique she called "The Ross test." "Natural wine," a nebulous term that generally refers to wine made with minimal intervention and without additives like sulfites, was tentatively entering the American wine world. Many in the wine world took the idea that you didn't have to be educated to know about wine as a personal insult. When she first told BA that she planned to cover only natural wines, Ross said, Rapoport called to try to change her mind.
