Do you think that he senses the enormity of the power and, therefore, the responsibility? I don’t think he understands it when it comes to X. He’s impulsive and sometimes contradictory in how he deals with the moderation issues. There’s times when he sees himself in epic terms, and there’s times when he says, “All right, I have to be more careful.”Given how much time you’ve spent with him, do you think you now understand what drives him? We all have some demons in our heads from childhood, and he’s got two orders of magnitude more than most of us. I don’t think he would have let me ride by his side for two years if he didn’t crave to have the story of his life — warts and all — out there.

CNN —No matter who wins Tuesday’s US Open quarterfinals match between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, history will be made: For the first time, two Black men will face off in the match. It’s also the first time since 2008 that two Black men play each other at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tiafoe, 25, and Shelton, 20, will face each other at a stadium christened after the Black tennis legend who broke barriers in the game. He was also the first Black American to play on the United States Davis Cup team. Earlier this year, Shelton’s father resigned from coaching at the University of Florida to coach his son in professional tennis.

Hello from Atlanta, where school started a month ago and we are deep into packing lunches, working hard and trying to ignore the recent courthouse shenanigans that seem to keep Georgia on everybody’s mind. By some estimates, nearly 95 percent of the crop was lost largely because of a hard and untimely freeze. But we Georgians have 40 commercial varieties, all of them ripening to a deep sugary tang under the hot Southern sun. I cherished the few peaches I did get, even though they were crazy expensive and weren’t as sweet or as ripe as usual. The brilliant Ligaya Mishan, a columnist for The New York Times Magazine, came to my rescue with a recipe to grill them (above).

The End (of Summer) Is Nigh. Let’s Enjoy It!

Here’s the bad news: On Aug. 11, the sun in New York City set at 8 p.m. It will not set that late again until 2024. That doesn’t mean that it’s time to bring out the seasonal affective disorder lamps: summer doesn’t end until Sept. 23. But take the approaching end of the season as extra motivation to savor these last few weeks before temperatures dip and sunlight is at a premium. As the New York Yankee great Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” See family and friends during the Labor Day weekend, and then squeeze everything you can out of these final weeks.

For reasons no one can quite decipher, the legal soap “Suits,” which aired on USA from 2011-2019, has become the show of the summer. While it was popular enough when it aired, I’ve read more “Suits” articles in the last few weeks than during the show’s entire run. The show is a hit on Netflix, but if you are on your “Suits” journey right now, note that the ninth and final season is in fact not on Netflix — though it is on Peacock and Amazon. Perhaps you’re thinking, “Wow, if only there were a spinoff to ‘Suits,’ surely everyone would want in on that.” Well, there is a spinoff to “Suits,” called “Pearson,” which follows Gina Torres’s character, Jessica Pearson, on her next legal endeavor. But in a perfect snapshot of the inane and hostile world of streaming, “Pearson” is not streaming on any platform.

Kellogg’s Eggo and Sugarlands Distilling Company partnered to launch a sippable boozy waffle beverage called Eggo Brunch in a Jar Sippin’ Cream, according to a news release Tuesday. This Eggo beverage isn’t for the kiddos, but parents are welcome to indulge. “Eggo Brunch in a Jar makes it easy for parents to kick back when they’re not caring for their little ones,” Beauprez said. The alcoholic brunchtime drink isn’t the first collaboration between Eggo and Sugarlands. The brands collaborated last year to create Eggo Nog, according to Sugarlands’ master distiller, Greg Eidam.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, I was writing a novel. But Russia, not content with destroying the statehood of Ukraine once before, had other plans. Did I really want to die at the end of the world, from which not everyone returns? Probably every Ukrainian soldier asks these questions that don’t have answers. Best Gifts for the Tea Lovers in Your Life

For masterful measuringOMABETA Portable Kitchen Tea Scale $16 at AmazonAs with baking, you will get best results when measuring tea leaves by weight rather than the spoonful. “Some teas are tightly rolled while others are fluffy and light,” explains Ben Marcus-Willers, of Red Blossom Tea Company, a San Francisco-based tea company that sells to consumers as well as Michelin three-star chefs. Desains suggests a porcelain tea pot clad in stainless steel to keep a quality tea warm for hours. Alternately, make a tea concentrate by doubling the amount of tea leaves in hot tea, then pouring it over ice. Tea will always taste best fresh and warm, and its taste will change—“often for the worse,” Kroesen notes—as it cools.

Scientists decode an ancient curry recipe

The sandstone slab, buried 2 meters (6.5 feet) below the surface, was dug up in 2018 at the Oc Eo archaeological complex in southern Vietnam. The site was once an overseas trading hub of an ancient Southeast Asian kingdom known as Funan, according to a new study of the substances found on the slab. The findings offer clues to how curry — and the people who made it — migrated to Southeast Asia. “Nowadays, preparing curry in Vietnam has become much simpler for most families due to the widespread availability of curry powder in supermarkets. Nguyen added that the team planned to recreate the 2,000-year-old curry based on the ingredients found at the site.

I followed the river toward the Uffizi Gallery where I stopped, enchanted by the scene below. It’s “a search for the delectable, delicious, almost gustatory delights of the moment,” as they put it. Other times, an object or architectural detail that piques your interest — a gate, a gargoyle — provides a portal to another time. Stories of vanished ages can be triggered by a single stone, then explored back home through books and websites. Being in a big city among so many strangers can be at turns exhilarating and disturbing.

CNN —Bruce Willis’ daughter, Tallulah, has revealed her difficulties coming to terms with her father’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis and shared details about its impact on her family’s life. “I keep flipping between the present and the past when I talk about Bruce: he is, he was, he is, he was. He had had two babies with my stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, and I thought he’d lost interest in me. ‘Ted Lasso’ Finale Recap: Family
  + stars: | 2023-05-31 | by ( Christopher Orr | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There are TV finales that go out with a shock or on a sad note or with a healthy dose of ambivalence. But that was not how “Ted Lasso” was ever going to end. Were you one of those who fell for the Rebecca–Ted fake out at the breakfast island that opened the episode? By which I mean, one of the (sane) viewers who was horrified at such a terrible idea or one of the (I’m sure very nice, though highly misguided) viewers who felt vindicated? It was a sneaky move, but with time running out I’m not sure how else we were ever going to see Beard in a banana hammock.

The state’s capital, Augusta (population 19,066), is near here, but no one feels slighted that the city isn’t afforded the cachet of Kennebunkport, or that tourist maps show routes up the East Coast that abruptly veer off to Bar Harbor and stop, ignoring the interior. Locals savor the long hot days lakeside, hiking, golfing or swimming at beloved nearby spots untrammeled by summer visitors.

I stroll to straighten up my back when I’ve been hunched over a computer for too long. I walk with my teen to prompt her to open up to me. So we’re dedicating the entire month of June to exploring the joy of walking — and I hope you’ll come along with us. And, for an activity that’s so casual, the physical and mental benefits are tremendous — better sleep, reducing joint pain and lowering anxiety. But, if you need a little more motivation, the Well Newsletter will include walking inspiration this June.
Once a wellness haven for American elites in search of mountain air, Asheville, N.C., has reinvented itself many times over the last century. In recent years, the city, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, has become a culinary hot spot, with multiple award-winning restaurants, and an inordinate number of breweries. Art lovers will find much to savor in the River Arts District, and bikers and hikers will have miles of trails in and around the city to explore. In the downtown area and beyond, Black residents are embracing their “Affrilachian” heritage through tours and art collectives, and creative spaces featuring the work of Indigenous artists acknowledge the region’s ties to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, on whose ancestral land the city sits.
