Hezbollah fired more than 60 projectiles into Israel before noon on Sunday, a day after an Israeli strike in the heart of the Lebanese capital killed at least 20 people. Three Israeli defense officials said the strike was an attempt to assassinate a top Hezbollah military commander, Mohammad Haidar. One of the Israeli defense officials, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations, later said that Mr. Haidar was not killed. On Sunday, waves of air raid sirens blared throughout much of northern Israel, including the hilltop town of Safed. Magen David Adom, an Israeli emergency rescue service, said it treated a woman in northern Israel who suffered a shrapnel injury.

Insider Today: White-collar recession
  + stars: | 2024-11-24 | by ( Matt Turner | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
AdvertisementThis post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. TikTok videos espoused the benefits of #publicsector jobs, and Google searches for "how to get a government job" hit a five-year high. Several careers consultants told Business Insider they were already experiencing a rush of demand from workers ready to shift to the private sector. But ask any white-collar professional, and they'll tell you a horror story that would prove otherwise. Hiring has held up well for low-earning workers, but those making six figures or more are in the midst of a white-collar recession.

Investors should be wary of the impacts several companies may bear from the cost-cutting goals of President-elect Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, according to TD Cowen. "The announcement of DOGE has led to concerns about future revenue and profitability of USG [United States government] contractors," analyst Roman Schweizer said in a Friday note to clients. "It is too early to estimate potential negative impacts to USG contractors given the limited results of prior USG reforms, but cuts are possible and there will be uncertainty for several months." In an effort to find companies that have the most at stake under potential DOGE actions, TD Cowen identified the publicly traded government contractors with the highest amount of dollars obligated in fiscal year 2023, both overall and by individual federal department. Pharmaceutical giants such as Merck , Humana and Pfizer could also be impacted by potential DOGE cuts, as the firm found they receive large sums of money primarily through contracts with the Department of Health & Human Services.

CNN —Russia has removed a senior commander from his post for making false claims about the progress of the war in parts of eastern Ukraine, according to military bloggers and Russian media. Ukrainian forces are facing “one of the most powerful Russian offensives” since the start of the war on the frontlines, according to Ukraine’s army chief. Some bloggers claim that false reports made by several commanders about the situation on the ground have led to heavy losses among Russian units. Military bloggers have become a key source of information since Russian’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Many have deep sources within the state’s armed forces or among pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Most employers say they're willing to negotiate, and 85% of employees who try for a higher salary, better benefits, or other changes get at least some of what they asked for. I'd estimate that about half of the candidates I've extended an offer to didn't negotiate at all. More likely, people are scared because they don't have much negotiating experience and feel unprepared. President-elect Donald J. Trump has vowed to slash immigration — both legal and illegal — and ramp up deportations on Day 1. Immigrants are racing to get ahead of the crackdown. And they’re taking whatever steps they can to inoculate themselves from the sweeping measures Mr. Trump has promised to undertake after he is inaugurated on Jan. 20. AdvertisementWe live in Asheville, and after Hurricane Helene, my kids wanted to donate toys. After watching the episode "Making Room for a Baby," I desperately wanted to "clean up my life," both metaphorically and physically. The labor of tossing out items that no longer "sparked joy" unironically did just that: sparked joy and gave me a renewed sense of hope for the future. To help our daughters better understand the scope of the damage, we drove through the decimated areas of town. AdvertisementI explained the basic idea: We would go through each individual item one by one and ask ourselves if it sparked joy.

A wildfire in southwestern Massachusetts grew to 1,000 acres this week, the second fire in the region to reach that size this month. As droughts and heat intensify, the risk of wildfires like these becoming catastrophic is growing across the United States. But after generations of suppressing fire, many millions of acres of brush and tree fuels have built up, increasing the risk of large, dangerous wildfires. Prescribed-burn associations — neighbors helping neighbors burn — are addressing some of these issues by pooling community members’ resources, experience and time. In an era of greater wildfire risk driven by fuel accumulation and global warming, governments should be swiftly removing barriers to the use of prescribed fires on private land.

That kind of energy, they thought, was missing from the pasta sauce aisle. "We probably took $150,000 — everything we made from that business, honestly, bottom line — and put it into Sauz," Bonde says. The pasta sauce aisle was crammed with basil marinaras, vodkas and creamy alfredos. Maybe shoppers would enjoy the flavor in their pasta sauce. "If I went and surveyed 1,000 pasta sauce shoppers, I don't think any of them would have said hot honey marinara.

Laws sharply limit the roles that federal troops can fill in US law enforcement. National Guard troops that report to state governors can support law enforcement, but the Posse Comitatus Act bars active-duty and federalized Guardsmen from acting as law enforcement. "You can fill in the blank on who those might be, but probably more Republican governors that are more friendly to President Trump. Those who are less friendly to President Trump would maybe not be as interested in taking on this mission." New York (AP) — Chuck Woolery, the affable, smooth-talking game show host of “Wheel of Fortune,” “Love Connection” and “Scrabble” who later became a right-wing podcaster, skewering liberals and accusing the government of lying about COVID-19, has died. Mark Young, Woolery’s podcast co-host and friend, said in an email early Sunday that Woolery died at his home in Texas with his wife, Kristen, present. “Chuck was a dear friend and brother and a tremendous man of faith, life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote. The audience would vote on the three contestants, and if the audience agreed with the guest’s choice, “Love Connection” would offer to pay for a second date. Woolery told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2003 that his favorite set of lovebirds was a man aged 91 and a woman aged 87.

This past week marked 58 years since the opening night for the Broadway premiere of “Cabaret” in 1966. The composer John Kander, the lyricist Fred Ebb and the playwright Joe Masteroff wrote “Cabaret” in collaboration with the director Harold Prince as a response to the era. Night after night, I witnessed audiences grappling with the raw, unsettling reflection that “Cabaret” held up to them. I’m hearing from friends in the current Broadway production of “Cabaret” that the line is once again getting an audible response, but of a different sort. Today, it seems the line is playing exactly as the Nazi-sympathizing Emcee would have intended.

While TSMC's Phoenix factories are expected to boost semiconductor chip production in the US, the company isn't making its most advanced chips stateside, industry experts told Business Insider. President-elect Donald J. Trump’s final flurry of cabinet picks and other appointments rounded out what his aides described as a unified, loyal, MAGA-driven administration. There is a revenge team, led by prospective nominees with instructions to rip apart the Justice Department, the intelligence agencies and the Defense Department, hunting down the so-called deep state and anyone who participated in the prosecutions of Mr. Trump. There is a calm-the-markets team, which Mr. Trump hopes will be led by Scott Bessent, the Wall Street billionaire who Mr. Trump chose for Treasury secretary.
