A major snowstorm bore down Friday on the Sierra Nevada, including the Lake Tahoe area, with as much as 10 feet of snow expected at higher elevations. As snow continues to spread across California, so will strong winds and blizzard conditions. Snowfall rates are expected to reach extreme levels of 3 to 5 inches an hour from Friday through Saturday – especially along the Sierra Nevada. Heavy snow and roaring winds are expected to combine to produce rare and long-lasting blizzard conditions for much of the Sierra and parts of the northern ranges. CNN —Nearly the entire population of California remains under flood alerts as the rain-soaked state braces for more precipitation and officials urge people to try to stay off the roads early this week. Officials are concerned about “excessive runoff from moderate to heavy rain,” which may lead to flooding, according to a post from the city on X. CNN —A stronger and longer-lasting atmospheric river event is set to hit California this weekend, bringing a considerable risk for flash flooding, mudslides, damaging winds, and heavy mountain snow. Nearly 40 million people are under flood watches including San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego. In Southern California, widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected – more than a month’s worth of rain for most. The main Democratic super PAC supporting President Biden’s re-election bid, Future Forward, is beginning this week to reserve $250 million in advertising across the most important battleground states, a blitz that it says is the largest single purchase of political advertising by a super PAC in the nation’s history. The ads, which are to be split between $140 million on television and $110 million on digital and streaming platforms, will start the day after the Democratic National Convention concludes in August and will run through Election Day, the super PAC said. The ad reservation covers seven states that are seen as the main presidential battlegrounds: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. It is also spending heavily in smaller markets in battleground states: $3 million each in Madison, Wis., and Reno, Nev., and $2 million in Flint, Mich. The digital reservation includes roughly $35 million on YouTube, with more on other streaming platforms, including Hulu, Roku and Vevo, plus the streaming services of the Spanish-language giants Telemundo and Univision.

Off the trail on Friday, Ms. Haley assailed Mr. Trump as “unhinged” on Fox News as she continued to try and bait him into a one-on-one debate. The presidential primary features Ms. Haley on the ballot, but won’t count toward the G.O.P. Such is the case with Sutton Foster as the eccentric Princess Winnifred in the Encores! revival of “Once Upon a Mattress,” which opened Wednesday at City Center. The central role in this broadly goofy musical was exuberantly, indelibly originated by Carol Burnett in 1959. And Winnifred, described by another character as “a strangely energetic swamp girl,” is an ideal outlet for that sensibility. “Once Upon a Mattress” is nobody’s idea of a great musical, but it is many people’s idea of a fun one.
