High yield bond funds tout sweet yields, but swirling concerns around the economy are spurring questions on how much longer the income party will last. Consider that the 30-day yield on the SPDR Bloomberg Short Term High Yield Bond ETF (SJNK) is 8.78%. Indeed, the Morningstar U.S. high yield bond index has a year-to-date total return of 4.61%, compared to the -1.29% total return on Morningstar's U.S. corporate bond index . Consumers are also a focal point when it comes to the economic outlook, according to Peter Higgins, head of fixed income and senior fixed income portfolio manager at Shelton Capital Management. Being selective about risk UBS is neutral on high yield overall, but positive on short-dated high yield paper of good quality companies.

This July, my husband and I sent in our final mortgage payment. Why we decided it made sense to pay off our mortgage earlyAn early mortgage payoff had been a major financial goal of ours since 2016. After doing some research and calculations, we realized a combination of investing and paying off our mortgage early would give us the more flexible lifestyle we had in mind. We have not had a car payment in five years. It led us to paying off our mortgage early, which has allowed us both to choose more fulfilling work and spend more time with our daughters.

Some California residents got $40,000 in grant money to build tiny homes on their properties. AdvertisementAdvertisementThousands of California homeowners got a $40,000 check from the state to build a tiny home in their backyard last year. California is reviving the ADU grant program again, but details are being worked out. Altogether, we paid $124,000 out of pocket, got the $40,000 from the state, and a forgivable loan of $67,500. I paid for the majority of the project with my savings, and the rest with the $40,000 California ADU grant.

Some of the market's biggest stock market investors echoed this view. Ackman said on Monday morning he didn't expect another rate hike. "If you just listen to their words, you know, you have to be pretty fearful there's going to be another rate hike. "Those numbers need to be supportive," Rieder had said of inflation data and jobs data including the JOLTS report in an interview with CNBC on the sidelines of DA. Ackman, even betting against another rate hike, has a view of inflation that sees it being persistently higher and placing more pressure on yields.

A pedestrian walks past the Bank of England in the City of London, Britain, September 25, 2023. REUTERS/Hollie Adams Acquire Licensing Rights企業 Bank of England フォローLONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The Bank of England wrote to lenders on Friday to urge them not to underestimate the risk of loan defaults as higher inflation and increased interest rates hit more vulnerable borrowers. However, in its letter to lenders, the BoE said they needed to look beyond aggregate risks and should identify whether particular types of borrower had specific vulnerabilities. Banks, for example, could look at spending patterns in their customers' current accounts and whether they had fixed-rate mortgages which would soon need to be refinanced at higher rates, the BoE suggested. It said for business lending, banks should not rely on a broad sector-based approach to risk and instead should in some cases consider specific companies' liquidity risks.

Higher rates are hitting regional banks, commercial real estate, and small businesses, he says. "We've got the pressure at the regional banks, commercial real estate collapse, and small business not getting any capital," the "Shark Tank" investor told "Kudlow" in a recent interview. The Federal Reserve has rushed to crush historic inflation by hiking interest rates from nearly zero to north of 5% since last spring. Many small businesses and CRE developers rely heavily on debt financing from smaller banks, meaning higher rates and a credit crunch pose serious threats to them. He cautioned in another recent interview that the Fed was likely to lift rates higher than 6%, sending residential mortgage rates from a little over 7% today to above 8%.

REUTERS/Lee Jae-Won/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 15 (Reuters) - U.S. junk-rated companies are using a more favorable debt issuance window this year to extend billions of dollars of short-term liabilities. Twelve high-yield issuers have raised $9.6 billion this week, making it the busiest week since November 2021, according to JPMorgan (JPM.N). Ninety of these borrowers used the money raised to refinance, the report noted. Junk bond issuers are now paying roughly 100 to 300 basis points more in coupons on new refinanced debt relative to in-place coupons, according to the report. But the opportunity to refinance is not open to all junk-rated issuers.

The S&P 500 is priced for perfection and could plunge 25% if problems crop up, Mike Wilson says. Morgan Stanley's stock chief says the outlook for company earnings and the economy is pretty grim. The benchmark S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite have rallied 17% and 33% respectively this year. He suggested a shock to the system of that kind could send the S&P 500 plummeting from nearly 4,500 points today to the low 3,000s — a drop of more than 25%. My husband is close to retirement, and we've been thinking about the continuing cost of a mortgage. We could pay off our mortgage now and be free from interest, but it's not the best use of our money. One of those plans is to pay off our mortgage in retirement. Let's say instead of paying off our mortgage, we took $100,000 from our retirement savings, put it in a CD, and blocked it for 12 months. My husband and I also looked at the tax benefit of mortgage interest.

The government should reduce the interest rate on federal student loans, and forgive any that's accrued. Half of Americans support forgiving up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt, a figure that soars to 83% among those who have student loans. Forgiving all student loan debt still maintains 39% support, a remarkably high figure for a fiscal policy that even a decade ago would have been an utter non-starter politically. Americans owe just south of $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. As a result, an equitable solution is this: retroactively adjust the interest rate on federal student loans to be at or near zero.

Home affordability is the worst it has been since 1984

Washington, DC CNN —Buying a house requires a much bigger slice of people’s income now — making this the most unaffordable housing market since 1984, by one measure. The number of cost-burdened renters increased by 1.2 million, to a record 21.6 million households, between 2019 and 2021. In all, 40.6 million households were housing-cost burdened in 2021, including 20.3 million who were severely burdened. Affordability picture remains grim this yearHopeful house hunters continued to face challenging affordability conditions in July as rising mortgage rates and historically low housing inventory pushed prices higher, said Edward Seiler, the Mortgage Bankers Association’s associate vice president for housing economics. “Unfortunately, given today’s lack of inventory and affordability levels, it may take years before home affordability returns to more ‘normal’ levels,” he said.

Minneapolis CNN —Americans’ credit card debt levels have just notched a new, but undesirable, milestone: For the first time ever, they’ve surpassed $1 trillion, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. During the second quarter, credit card balances shot up by $45 billion, or nearly 4.6%, to land at $1.03 trillion, according to the New York Fed’s latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. Rising credit card debt and auto loan balances helped to drive overall household debt levels up to $17.06 trillion for the quarter, the report showed. “Unfortunately, [credit card debt] is only going to go up from here,” Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst for LendingTree, told CNN. The number of people who made a hardship withdrawal during the second quarter surged from the first three months of the year to 15,950, an increase of 36% from the second quarter of 2022.
