Market analysts say an array of factors have combined to force up Treasury yields. As a result, higher Treasury rates may be needed to attract more buyers. That suggests that Treasury yields may stay unusually high even if the Fed keeps its own benchmark rate on hold. Many business and consumer loan rates might, in turn, also stay high, helping keep a lid on economic growth and inflation. Wall Street traders foresee a 98% probability that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged Wednesday, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Patrick Harker said Friday he thinks the central bank can stop raising interest rates. Irrational behavior due to concerns over the stability of the U.S. banking system has made Charles Schwab 's stock a cheap investment opportunity, according to value investor Daniel O'Keefe. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak later on Thursday, giving markets further clues into the future path of U.S. monetary policy. The U.S. dollar index , which measures the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, hovered around 106.58, after hitting 106.84 overnight, the highest level since Nov. 30. CNN —As momentum shifts toward clean energy, coal has had some unexpected staying power. A new report by the International Energy Agency found that global coal demand hit an all-time high in 2022 amid the energy crisis, eclipsing the previous record set in 2013. For example, Panasonic built a new electric vehicle plant in Kansas to aid its transition to clean energy. Why it matters: Coal, the highest carbon emitting and dirtiest energy source, is the single biggest contributor to human-created climate change. New York CNN —Stocks tumbled Tuesday after a slew of economic data stoked fears about the US economy’s cloudy outlook and further interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 388 points, or 1.1%, its biggest one-day decline since March. The stock market remains in a bull market, however — it would need to fall 20% from its peak to enter bear territory. “The Fed will see the reacceleration of house prices as a reason to keep interest rates higher for longer,” said Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said Tuesday in an interview with the Times of India that he is preparing the bank’s clients for a 7% interest rate scenario, further spooking investors.

Here's what it might take for the 10-year yield go to 5%

Can the 10-year yield go to 5%? The primary factor that would move the 10-year towards 5%, Braizinha says, is a reacceleration of the economy. A soft landing (still growth, but with lower inflation) won't do it. Braizinha notes that the soft landing is still his base case and would "push back" against a 5% 10-year yield. He also notes that "the degree of conviction" around a stronger economy "seems to have deteriorated."

As the federal funds rate rose, the prime rate did as well, and credit card rates followed suit. The average rates for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage "remain anchored north of 7%," said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac's chief economist. Already, the average rate for a HELOC is up to 9.12%, the highest in 22 years, according to Bankrate. Student loansFederal student loan rates are also fixed, so most borrowers aren't immediately affected by the Fed's moves. A new partnership between Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL) has the potential to benefit both Club holdings in the competitive cloud-computing landscape. Oracle, a database pioneer with more than 40 years of history operating in the market, had existing offerings geared toward Azure customers . Wall Street analysts were generally upbeat on the implications for Microsoft and Oracle, which joined the Club's portfolio a month ago. Analysts at Bernstein downplayed concerns that the deeper partnership with Microsoft will hurt Oracle's fast-growing cloud-computing service, known as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. "This partnership also lowers the potential risk of Microsoft trying to target Oracle database customers to move off Oracle.
