Investors now expect that the Fed will begin easing back rates in May or June, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Before the Bell: What does the Fed’s signal that it won’t cut rates in March mean for markets? I think what’s important for the markets themselves is the fact that the Fed has signaled they’re going to cut rates. So, they’re going to cut rates at some point this year, probably May or June is going to be the first cut that we get. There’s a lot of areas where your earnings … start to reaccelerate higher, and that’s a good thing.

LONDON — L'Oreal shares fell more than 7.3% in early deals Friday, before slightly paring losses, as the company reported lower-than-expected sales and pointed to a slowdown in demand in Asia. The world's largest beauty brand on Thursday reported fourth-quarter sales below estimates, rising 2.8% to 10.6 billion euros. Barclays analysts had anticipated a figure near 10.9 billion euros, according to Reuters. The company also logged a 7.6% increase in 2023 full-year sales to 41.18 billion euros ($44.37 billion). The quarterly shortfall was led by activity in North Asia, including China, where sales fell 6.2% over the three-month period.

Chinese financial authorities have been striving to prop up the country's stocks through various measures, including steps aimed at increasing the liquidity in the market, warnings against malpractices and falling back on proverbs. With the onshore markets already erasing gains after the People's Bank of China announced steps to boost liquidity last month, there are doubts whether this familiar Beijing playbook will have a meaningful impact on markets. On Tuesday, Central Huijin, a unit of the mammoth sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corporation, said it had expanded purchases of exchange-traded funds linked to the country's onshore stocks to safeguard market stability. China Securities Regulatory Commission had also warned Monday against "malicious" short-selling and said it would step up scrutiny of margin financing following a volatile trading session. On Sunday it had assured to protect the interests of investors after onshore markets plunged as much as 3% before paring losses Friday.

But it's still going to be a major force in podcasting for years to come — because it's hanging on to Joe Rogan. Spotify says Rogan, the most popular person in podcasting, will be sticking around the platform via a "multiyear" contract. AdvertisementAll of this makes a lot of sense, given the way that podcasting — and Spotify's commitment to podcasting — has changed. That backing almost certainly helped keep Rogan with Spotify for another deal. So instead, this deal means Rogan gets a reliable income source, and Spotify gets the best-known name in the industry.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

While earnings, profit margins, and cash flow came in slightly ahead of expectations, sales were light across the board. Segment margin , similar to an adjusted operating income margin, grew 64 basis points to 23.5%, slightly ahead of expectations and ahead of the high-end of management's previous forecast. Segment margin performance was largely better than expected, with the exception of Building Technologies, and cash flow generation came in solidly above expectations. Where they landed on guidance both in terms of sales and margin performance, and therefore earnings, hinges on the short-cycle recovery. Full-year segment margin guidance of 23.15% at the midpoint was higher than estimates.

Spot gold rose 0.5% to $2,046.63 per ounce by 0355 GMT. The Fed left interest rates unchanged and knocked down the idea that the U.S. central bank could cut rates in the spring, but dropped a long-standing reference to possible further hikes. Futures pared bets for a rate cut in March to 35.5% from 90% at 2023-end, but increased chances of a reduction in May to 96%, according to LSEG's interest rate probability app IRPR. Traders are pricing in about 142 basis points (bps) of Fed rate cuts for this year, up from bets of about 130 bps of reductions on Wednesday morning. Data showed U.S. private payrolls rose far less than expected in January.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares traded mixed Thursday as pessimism spread among investors about any imminent interest rate cut in the United States. Wall Street slipped following another signal that it may have gotten too optimistic about when the Federal Reserve will deliver the cuts to interest rates. Yields climbed after a report showed sales at U.S. retailers were stronger in December than economists expected. Higher yields can crimp profits for companies, while also making investors less willing to pay high prices for stocks. Higher yields hurt all kinds of investments, and high-growth stocks tend to be some of the hardest hit.

Futures contracts on orange juice , cocoa , coffee and sugar have soared in part because of extreme weather and supply concerns related to El Niño. Morning Bid: Gold makes the running as oil fails to fire

Oil failed to sustain an early rally that followed news of attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Notably, oil prices lost early gains and Brent eased around 57 cents to $78.31 a barrel amid doubts that OPEC+ would be able to maintain planned output cuts, particularly by some African countries. At the same time, U.S. oil output is at record levels above 13 million barrels a day and rig counts are still rising. A commodity faring better is gold, which surged suddenly this morning to top $2,111 an ounce for the first time before paring the gains to $2,086. We are shifting our industrial exposure Tuesday afternoon by selling Emerson Electric on its slight gain and buying Eaton on today's dip. Historically when the market is overbought, we are hesitant about putting new money to work because an overbought market suggests the market has run up too far too fast and needs to digest gains. But selling one stock to buy another else keeps us cash neutral. We realize a loss of about 8% on Emerson stock purchased in December 2022.
