CNBC spoke to Foster about the economics of abortion access and the financial impacts of the end of Roe v. Wade. Diana Greene Foster: One good thing about The Turnaway Study is that our demographics closely resemble national demographics on who gets abortions. [They're also] more likely to have evictions, have a larger amount of debt if they're denied an abortion. The number of public records, such as bankruptcies, evictions and court judgements, significantly increased for those denied abortions, by 81%. So, it isn't the case that everyone who wants an abortion is now carrying a pregnancy to term.

CNN —Moldova’s crucial referendum on joining the European Union is too close to call, partial results showed Monday, as President Maia Sandu condemned an “unprecedented assault” on the country’s democracy. With just over 1.4% of ballots still to be counted, 50.2% had voted “yes” in the referendum, according to the country’s Central Election Commission. The tight margin would come as a blow to Sandu, who had been hoping for a clear endorsement of the pro-EU path she has charted during her first presidential term. Vadim Ghirda/APCNN reported last week on the efforts of a Kremlin-linked network, spearheaded by the exiled Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, to buy votes in Moldova, aiming to sway the results of the EU referendum. If other pro-Russian parties and voters throw their support behind Stoianoglo, the November 3 run-off could be extremely tight.

New York CNN —An umbrella organization of civil rights groups is alerting the public to “digital voting disinformation” and imploring social media companies to take action. Wiley’s coalition, representing more than 200 civil rights interest groups and other organizations, wants companies like Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta to more clearly separate fact from fiction. “Social media companies should be vigilant,” Wiley said, observing that information platforms don’t have to be overwhelmingly polluted. The Leadership Conference’s Center for Civil Rights and Technology decided to speak out after social networks were swamped with lies about Hurricanes Helene and Milton earlier this fall. The conduct of social media firms is of interest to civil rights groups; candidates and campaigns; government agencies; and election technology suppliers, just to name a few.

As more retirees start to claim Social Security, there are not enough workers contributing to the program to make up for that increase in benefit payments. But the trust fund Social Security relies on to pay retirement benefits is projected to be depleted in 2033. watch nowBoth presidential candidates — former president Trump and Vice President Harris — have vowed to protect Social Security benefits. "Seniors should not pay tax on Social Security," Trump wrote on July 31 in all capital letters on social media platform Truth Social. Ending taxes on Social Security benefits would move the insolvency date of Social Security's trust fund closer by over one year, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

CNN —Voters in Moldova will cast their ballots Sunday in two crucial votes, which have been billed as the most consequential in the country’s post-Soviet history. Alongside a more sophisticated misinformation campaign, Shor has resorted to cruder methods to meddle with Moldovan politics. CNN —Editor’s Note: One Small Thing is a new series to help you take a simple step toward a healthy, impactful goal. But a little more investment in your community may make a big difference, said Dr. Gail Saltz, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. One in 5 adults in the United States reported feeling loneliness “a lot of the day yesterday,” according to Gallup data released Tuesday. Building back deeper, more intimate connections may feel hard to do quickly to address your loneliness, but turning your attention to invest in your community may be one small thing you can do to help, Saltz said. Even small daily interactions with strangers in a coffee shop can help boost your mood when you're feeling lonely.

Black conservative radio host Shelley Wynter drew outrage from many when he broke down the Black male electorate in the U.S. into “house African Americans and field African Americans” during an appearance Wednesday on CNN. “This race is between house African Americans and field African Americans, and field African Americans are voting for [Donald] Trump.”During enslavement in the U.S., “house slaves” worked in the main house and generally performed indoor tasks. At the same time, Wynter’s comments highlighted the intensity surrounding the Black male vote and how influential it may be in November. “It just does a disservice to all of us, both as voters and as Black Americans. “There’s nothing that compares to enslavement in the United States or for Black Americans,” he said.

With that increase, the maximum Social Security benefit for a worker retiring at full retirement age will jump to $4,018 per month, up from $3,822 per month this year, according to the Social Security Administration. Who gets maximum Social Security benefits? Since Social Security retirement benefits are calculated based on the highest 35 years of earnings, workers need to consistently have wages up to that threshold to earn the maximum retirement benefit. If a wealthy person has other sources of income, for example from investments that do not require payroll tax contributions, that will not affect the size of their Social Security benefits, said Jim Blair, vice president of Premier Social Security Consulting and a former Social Security administrator. How can you increase your Social Security benefits?

China has no choice but to keep raising the retirement age for workers, according to Yi Fuxian. AdvertisementChina has a retirement crisis on its hands, and the nation will probably be forced to keep raising the retirement age for workers to stave off demographic imbalances, according to a demographer. Those trends led China to recently raise the mandatory retirement age for workers, the first time the nation has raised its retirement age in decades. "Given the severity of its demographic crisis, China will need to keep raising its retirement age, potentially fueling civil unrest and political instability," Yi said. China's main pension fund could be depleted by 2035, according to a 2019 estimate from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

There's good reason to adopt a skills-first strategy: Hiring managers who practice skills-first hiring find it twice as easy to find qualified candidates than hiring managers who do not. But the advancement of generative AI has the potential to change that. To use AI effectively for skills-first hiring, talent professionals must understand how models have been developed and trained and audit and monitor those models for bias. Indeed's Smart Sourcing generative AI provides an explanation of the candidate's potential overlapping qualifications with the employer's job description. As crucial as AI will be to skills-first hiring, talent acquisition, and management always starts and end with humans.
